I have a navel, Washington navel(darker flesh), and blood orange in my yard. The blood oranges tend to mold and become squishy once they get to a certain size and it happens quickly whereas the others can hold their fruit for months and months... My Pinkerton avocado tree is from a sport and has a longer necked fruit than normal. I had no idea that citrus also did that. Another great video that I learned from.
I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County amid groves of Washington and Valencia oranges, grapefruit and lemons. Also walnut groves, very old olive trees and beautiful carob trees. Here in Arkansas, I keep my greenhouse full of citrus, olives and carob. It’s not home without the heavenly scent of citrus!

I have a mystery orange in Lousiana. It's October, and they're still green. Had some splitting this year. 4 left. I hope I get a ripe one. 2 splits only had about 2 seeds each. Acidic but good, thin skin.

There was a little citrus orchard about a mile by ditch bank from the house grew up in. This was back in the early 80s. It was all overgrown, mostly chutes off the rootstock. Everything from kumquats to red grapeftuit with everything in between. Some weren't edible, just acid & bitterness. You couldnt ride a dirt bike in there because many of them had thorns as long as your finger. One day we discovered what grew underneath half of them. We were very popular after school the next day. Didn't go back for a long time. 3 days at most😁. We eventually figured out it was a community effort. A few high schoolers. A few hippies & a few irrigators. One day there was a road crew chopping the trees down & it all got burned a week or two later.

Valencia seems so much better.. my experience: *less pith *better integrity making them easy to peel and separate wedges without them bursting etc. *sweeter *no intrusive "baby oranges". *less small seeds that are hard to spot For some reason my country started replacing the valencia ones with navel ones and in comparison they are useless unless you're making juice.
Navel orange in its ripest, juiciest and serve cold is heaven on earth if you are a bit tired and thirsty. trust me. the experience is heavenly. good or great is not enough to summarised it.

The founders wanted to draw people to visit and live there. The name was chosen because it sounds inviting and it did indeed draw many visitors.
The citrus did inspire the name, as those naming it wanted to convey how lush and productive the area was at the time. It so productive anything would grow and produce all year, even oranges. All sorts of citrus were grown, not just Navel Oranges, but Valencia oranges, too. Valencia oranges were named after Valencia, Spain, not the other way around. These oranges were developed in what is now Southern California (at the time Mexico) by Wolfskill. UC Davis has a research orchard named after Wolfskill a few miles from your property in Winters. There's no competition between these oranges. They ripen at different times and serve different purposes. One is better for fresh eating. The other is better for juicing. If you are looking for a recommendation on which orange to plant, I'd plant a Valencia. It's versatile and has a long hang time. It makes great juice for most of the summer, can be sliced for fresh eating, is great for preserving, and almost always has fruit on the tree that you can use for orange peel in recipes. Naval oranges, however, ripen in winter when there aren't many other fruit available. So, it's a good choice for that reason.

None other than Mickey and Minnie.... yes, sir, that's right, Disney World is in Orange County, Florida....(Also, there used to be a lot of orange trees there, too, before the citrus canker killed them all....😢) Ya'll got the Disneyland, but we got the Disney WORLD!! 😅😅😅
there is a problem in agriculture> if u cant sell it u gonna have to eat it- i had friends that sold "cut flowers" and if they had a bad selling day they would have to get out the salad dressing cause thats all they would have to eat that night- so> ono what if

I've never had a navel orange that didn't suck. Valencia oranges are the only choice for me.
Visit the ranch in February and buy a bag of oranges. Guarantee you will change your mind.

Oranges were wonderful and easy clean up. Unlike the grapefruit which are awful to clean up when the fall and flies get to them. Stinky.
