Small girl, big bike - is the Harley-Davidson Road Glide too big? 2,500km review

  • With the world to explore finding the right touring bike can be a challenge, so in this video I’ll share my experience riding the Harley-Davidson Road Glide around New Zealand with Tour1. The organised tour took us on several thousand kilometres of road through the wonders of the South Island in both the pouring rain and glorious sunshine. I’ve ridden many other Harley’s before and have a Street Bob 2015 in my own garage... but I think it’s safe to say the Road Glide, especially in this light popping red paint, has become my favourite Harley-Davidson. From its poised stance with the shark fairing, to it’s amble power, insanely comfortable seating position, pillion comfort and great touring features, it’s won me over. Check out the video for more details, including hearing the sound of the Milwaukee engine.
This video is part of a multi episode series of my Tour1 New Zealand adventure so make sure you check out the other videos in the series:

Gary France from Tour1 here, the Harley-Davidson touring company guy Vanessa mentions at the start of the video. It is worth saying we were on rental bikes that we rented from Bularangi Motorbikes in NZ. They organise tours there as well and I can thoroughly recommend them, as their motorcycles and customer service are both excellent. Check them out!

Vanessa, I absolutely love my 2018 RoadGlide. I bought it in 2020 with less than 10 thousand miles. I've got nearly 50 thousand on it to-date. So far since February of this year 2023 I've put nearly 15,ooo miles on it. twice so far this year 1000 miles at once! I'm no spring chicken, most of my springs are sprung! lol and it's so fun and comfortable to ride!! Love your videos, motorcycle, or off road beats, always good!

Very fair review there Vanessa, thank you. The Harley-Davidson Road Glide is a wonderful touring motorcycle and I agree with everything you have said.

The most important thing is that the color of your pants and shirt match the colors of the bike.

Great review girl. I owned a Softail standard for many years, they are great to ride, the whole HOG community W.W is great to hook up with and do some great rides.

Nice review. I’ve owned one for a couple of years now and agree with your thoughts. Riders can purchase a dongle to wirelessly connect their phone for better NAV. If you’re going to Italy 🇮🇹 next year with Gary, I’ll see you on that tour. Ride safe.

Thanks for sharing Vanessa. It's good news to hear about the new brakes. The last Harley I rode was an old iron head Sportster, harsh language was not only more effective than the brakes but a necessity to warn people in front of you to avoid getting tyre tread marks on their clothes even at very slow speeds < 10 mph. Fortunately the rear brake was much better on that bike.

I own a 2018 Road Glide Special. The beauty of Harley is that they sell seats, handlebars, windshields, etc. to make it comfortable for each individual.

I really miss my road glide special . Fantastic bike and all round bike to. I put mine on fast up air ride front n rear and 23" front wheel but a must for me was to change the bars to taller apes , 11" was enough as I felt the stock bars pushed me back and felt like I was hanging onto it and not sitting as I should.

Strange, if you stop the bike with music from the USB stick, it will play from the USB again (stick or telephone or bluetooth) on IGNtion or ACCessory, sometimes there is a glitch indeed, but I have that maybe only once or twice during the many kilometers during a holiday trip (both on the first and second generation "infotainment" system). Yes the (newer) roads are not always up to date, but you can operate the system from the hamdelbars, and it does not fall of the bike (!). The smaller holiday roads however will always be up to date, because existing roads do not disappear 😉.
By the way, the good Brembo brakes have been around on Tourings since 2008 already (time flies), but indeed not yet on your single disc 2015 Cruiser.

I have to admit that I am attracted to Harleys as I love cruiser engines. The Fat Bob 114 is the one I'd like. Same engine. Isn't music distracting when you're riding? Harley panniers are fantastic. Excellent video, Vanessa. 1990 [Nick J]

Music is great when you switch to a bigger aftermarket system. I had the mac daddy Harley Boom audio 3 that included pannier speakers but later got Rockford Fosgate and that is even better. Long (and even short) road trips of a month or more are more pleasant with tunes during all day long rides. Nine hours on the road in a day can get boring just listening to the voices in your head. Best part is when you pull up to a light and some clown is blasting their Latin spanish language disco music (I live in South Florida) you can retaliate by cranking up the Scotland bagpipe marching band music to max volume, that is the only thing that will drown it out.

There were two rules I set for my friend as a bike rider. You never ride without bike jacket, pants and most important of all boots. He always wore abrasion resistant or leather and enduro boots. Never jeans and ordinary boots. Feet ankles and skin are too vulnerable to be on the open road with idiots who don’t think bikes exist, or at least they refuse to see them. Please all riders gear up properly every time , the difference it makes should the worst happen may be the difference between riding on or never riding again, even if you survive.

3:55 an item that was not included in comfort, in my opinion, is the heat striking the upper legs which mainly comes from the rear cylinder. This problem should have been solved a long time ago, mainly because this is a bike used during the hot season (as opposed to commuter bikes used during the winter as well). I liked the other parts of the review very much!

    • @MitchSnider
      @MitchSnider 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Harley makes heat deflectors for this. After dealing with this heat on my Night Train I purchased them as part of my new bike package in 2016 and they make a big difference. Also turning on the engine temperature management system turns off the rear cylinder when stopped when it gets hot so that helps too.

Road glide limited owner here. Bike is big but very manageable. Just have to pay attention to how you park it. Don't park down hill unless you back it in. Watch out for slanted pavement, it can be hard to pick up if it gets over too far.😮

I would not trade my Triumph Rocket 3 Touring for this one no, but Harleys are probably a bit too looked down upon for being primitive. Certainly the fit and finish is impeccable, usually. Not a big fan of how they cling to air cooling like grim death, that's just so inefficient and it does limit power, certainly if you even try to remain within emissions standards.

It’s only too big if you can’t put, both feet flat on the ground . I once, went down after stepping down on a uneven surface , and the weight of the bike was to much too hold up. No damage, but I did pull a few muscles in my ass , which took two months to heal.
