All good advise but one thing these people Never tell you..and as a Vet,I'm surprised they never say it. It relates to Security!...when you gather preps and make your plans for SHTF....SHUT the FUCK up. Just keep your mouth shut about it. Do NOT TALK..to friend's,extended family,neighbors,co-workers,your children( kid,s love to TALK)..your drinking buddies...Do not brag,do not boast..just keep it to yourself...Loose lip's are a security nightmare. Granted it can be and is for a lot of people..a family thing..good for you. This is just a general rule to keep in mind and adjust to your own situation. Another tool in your kit..so to speak.

I couldn't agree with you more, that's how people get fucked over all the time is because they talk too much.

    • @rodrigtf

Doc. M. Agreed! I'm big on keeping things under wraps with my preps (active duty Navy with 15+ years in with a clearance, so OPSEC is HUGE for me). The easy part is stocking up and keeping quiet... the hard part is when one of my friends or family members unwittingly stumbles on my hidden stash and runs their f****** pie hole to their circle of friends and family about it (and they're almost ALWAYS the ones who have profligate spending habits and don't put away anything for emergencies). That's the frustrating part. I always use the cover story of "hurricane season being around the corner" and "taking extra precautions in case power and/or services go down" (I live in Louisiana so most people here have a similar mindset)

    • @doc.m.9628

rodrigtf I'say ..it's donations for the church or a shelter..wanna donate? people then sometimes hand over a $50 bill or return later with a bag or two of food donations. Sort of killing the subject and get free donations to my stash. ( I know, that's mean...Oh well..tough world)

One thing i saw that was a problem during Sandy was when the power did come back on a lot of houses cought on fire. People were evacuated and come home to thier houses burned to the ground. I don't know if its common knowledge but i had no idea that this could happen. These people should have shut off the main power. Not really a prepping tip but its good to know.

Hey man, this is just a tip from me to you. If you want to save a ton of money. You can freeze your MRE's and they stay good for WAY longer. Another guy on youtube tested it and he ate a whole MRE meal that was frozen for something like 17 years and he said it tasted exactly like a freshly made 1. Ohye and I see people saying that a fire extinguisher isn't needed. When I went to visit my parents they didn't have 1. I bought them one, two days later my dad was making fries on the stove, oil caught fire and he nearly burned their house down, used my fire extinguisher and got the fire out. Some of you won't be that lucky.

@@aksrule3393 a lot of countries allow brake action shotguns without licence, but for those strict countries like the one I live in (Ireland) you need to have a full police check and the licence has to be renewed for 300 euros every year. Many guns are restricted and need more rigorous police checks and have a higher licence price, such as handguns and rifles.

Just a suggestion on bleach. I believe the half life on bleach is something like 6 months. So storing bleach for a long time may not be an effective way to purify water in such an event. What is very effective is using Calcium Hypochlorite crystals (AKA "Pool Shock"). The pool shock can be purchased for about $10 for a 16 ounce package and will last much longer on the shelf.
Great video. Thanks for your contribution to all of us!

you put this in drinking water?? why would you do that. bleach or pool shock?

    • @LSFprepper
      @LSFprepper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+Jeremy Miller Go with pool shock. Get the standard 68% Calcium Hypochlorite. It is shelf stable and 1 lb of it can make about 82 gallons of standard bleach. (5.5 grams to 1 gallon of water). 1.5 ounces of bleach (3 tsp) will purify a galon of water, so a 1 lb container of calcium hypochlorite can purify over 10,000 gallons of water. Steer clear of Dichlor and Trichlor chemical compounds. They corrode many metals and even some plastic containers and create deadly fumes. When adding bleach to water, stir occasionally and keep the cap off and in a few hours it will evaporate leaving good drinkable water.

+Davey Jones there is a difference between choosing not to like an idea and going to a video just to spread hate. If you chose not to participate in the whole "prepping" concept, that is your choice. But it is unnecessary to come to a video just to hate on ones view or idea, for example people calling preppers crazy or implying they are criminals.

ahh i thought you were just talking about the thumbsdowns.
those people though, i think are the ones going around looking for things to hate on.
which i believe to be an identity issue.
these people are trying to jack up their own ego through self-identifying as someone who opposes a thing, because they have nothing to stand for or with or any positives to base their self-image on.
whenever people like this don't have something to hate on, they no longer know who they are. which brings them one step closer to that mirror and the truth reflected in it they have been running and hiding from their entire lives.
basically: they are doing it because they are insecure.

Candles and candle holders. Small, cheap, quick, effective, multiple uses. The power went down at my house just after dark 2 days ago. Within about a minute, I had a lit candle in every room in my house. Get the stick kind, not the little tea candles, or the ones in any kind of glass holder, and not the fat ones. The stick kind exposes the flame best, while the other kinds develop a puddle of melted wax that tends to reduce, block or choke off the flame height. A big box of stick candles about an inch in diameter and 7-8 inches long is extremely handy in an emergency.

Moringa is consided a tree of life...a few moringa seeds added to funky water will clean it in several minutes....you can eat, make tea with moringa leaves. But it grows in warm (Florida) areas; inside in colder climates. It is suggested to not boil the water for the tea as it will deplete some of the nutrients. It has protein; 20 something amino acids; 8-9 are the essential amino acids, minerals & multiple vitamins. It is now grown all over in countries where people are starving.

    My Thoughts/Comments/2Cents:
    1. Medical - Yep, I agree 100% with him on this, a first aide kit is ok for NORMAL situations, but if you stuck in a storm, or we get invaded, or a plague...on in on with the various things, the point is, serious wounds and illnesses require serious medical care.....have GOOD Medical bag/kit on hand...its just smart.
    2. Water - Ummm....yeah, I agree with keeping a small stockpile of water, the more the better. Having your own Well is your best bet, but something is better than nothing. Bleach....ok, if you know what your doing, this can be great....remember, a DROP or TWO for a GALLON is more than a enough, any more than that and you risk poisoning yourself. Also, you might want to learn how to make homemade Colloidal Silver Water(basicly water with silver particles in it). Its good for boosting your immune system, will help fight off colds and flues and many other nasty bugs. Will help keep your system running right, so...yeah....just smart.
    3. Food - Well, this is as much a no brainer as the water...YOU NEED Water, but you also NEED FOOD.....cars don't run without Gasoline, your body doesn't run without Food. Obviously keeping a decent and rotated supply of canned foods is a good idea(and helpful for your pocket book if done right), but lets face it they still go bad.
MRE's are just to expensive these days, and most of them are already two or three years old when you do get them....no way man. Freeze Dried, great choice, lasts for 30 years or more, generally taste pretty good, does require warm water to re-hydrate them, but you should have that already if your smart. Only REAL downside to Freeze Dried.....its as expensive or more so than MRE's.....
There are a few things you might consider. Beans & Rice.....both of which IF kept dry in sealed containers will last almost forever.....but they must be kept DRY & in SEALED Containers......there is another, but it takes some explaining....
PARCHED CORN....yes, now your like WTF, but its a real thing. In fact it is something that the Native Americans and the Early Explorers used quite often. Basicly, you take Whole Kernel Corn and Dehydrate it....now, dehydration does not remove ALL the moisture....only about 80 to 90%......you then either bake them, or you can cook them in a cast iron skillet with LIGHT oiling until they are a golden brown color(if you using yellow corn).....let them cool, once cool you crush them....not into a powder, think of something along the lines of chip crumbs ...if you want there are several tutorials on TH-cam on how to make it. Point is the stuff has all the calories, and vitamins and such that you can literally support yourself on just the crushed parched corn and water for extended periods of time without any problems(well, you might loose some weight).....though you may want to find a Protein supplement as well........
    4. Stove - Oh yeah, your going to need something to cook on and in cooler climates heat your home with....camping stoves are ok for the short term emergency situation, but you may want to think about having something a little more reliable around....if you have a good source of wood nearby a Rocket Stove is a great thing to have......they are cheap and easy to build, require little fuel and last for long periods of time.....and get nice and toasty when its cold out...
    5. Lighters - Hummm, well yes, you need something to like a flame with so as to cook your food....or to heat your home. Bics are a good choice for a solid reliable lighter.....but you may still want to keep other sources around just in case....never hurts...
    6. Firearm - While I agree that if you CAN get one, get it....but if you can't, don't give up, some kind of weapon is better than nothing. Look into other types, Bows/Crossbows, slingshots, Air Rifles, Spears, etc.......ANYTHING that can help you defend your home, yourself/family or enable you to hunt for food is ALWAYS a good thing....
    7. Lighting - While I don't think that its absolutely CRUCIAL that you have a lantern or anything like that, it can be VERY helpful to have something. Multiple sources with multiple fuel types is better, but get what you can. I suggest at least ONE Lantern Type(Area Illumination) and One Torch/Flashlight Type(Directional Illumination) at the very least. Plenty to choose from, pick what seems best for you.
    8. The Radio - Agree 100%, getting updated news on what the hell is going on IS absolutely Crucial to your ability to survive whatever is going on......Don't Skimp on this, a few extra bucks for the better quality means it might last longer.....
    9. Multi-tool - I am honestly split on this one. I am not the biggest fan of multi-tools, they are just not as useful or reliable as alot of people seem to think. Most home owners generally have a small supply of general tools around the house, a pair of pliers, a wrench and hammer and some screwdrivers are just as if not more handy than a multi-tool.......
That said, if you happen to be one of those FEW home owners(or renters) who do NOT have ANY tools at home, you might want to think about getting yourself one or two of these, anything is better than nothing.
    10. Sleeping Bags - Ummm....a little confused on this one, if a person is Sheltering In Home they should already have blankets and such...mind a few extras are always helpful, specially in the cold months. Now if your going to be Sheltering In Place at a local church or community center, you may want to have some sleeping bags read to go...other than that, this seems a little useless to me.
    11. Fire Extinguisher - Well.....yeah, thats just smart. Actually most cities these days REQUIRE you to have at least ONE Fire Extinguisher in your home at all times anyhow......sooooo........yeah.....I might recommend getting several, a larger one for the kitchen area or or anywhere you have direct flame(fireplaces), and several smaller ones around the house, and by things like gas water heater/furnaces, etc...can never be to careful.....
    12. Portable Toilet - Well, that is not one most people do reviews on....lol.....but I can see the upside of it. As long as your Water supply is running your should be fine with indoor plumbing, but should that change, having something like this might be a good investment......lol......
Ok, so there are my 2 Cents, Tolls and Keyboard Cowboys your up, go ahead, do the shit talking, you know you want to.....lol.......

I really like that you had a brick of lighters like that. I remember reading the experiences of a man and his family during a stay and defend situation in another country years ago. If I remember correctly the city fell into chaos during a military siege. Small lighters like that were a perfect tool to trade for goods & services (had to pay the local doctor somehow). Cheap now, but invaluable commodity later once all the jewelry has been traded away.

A 12 Gauge Shotgun is okay, if your a big strong guy. But even I find the recoil is a bit much. A 20 Gauge shotgun is much better for the average person. Can fire every thing from bird shot to slugs. My father hunts deer with a 20 Gauge and does just fine. The biggest thing is, no matter what firearm you buy. Practice with it as much as you can. From shooting to cleaning and learning how to clear jams.

Not too great for urban self protection but its a great survival weapon in rural areas for hunting and since its capable of firing everything from .22 to 12g it will kill just about every game animal in north america!

Thank you for making the gun an extra bonus item. I have PTSD, I am under psychiatric care and have been hospitalized for suicide attempts. If I can legally carry I should be. Another prepper included a gun, didn't list a gun alernative like pepper spray or bear spray, and made it one of his 5 so now I'm down to to 4 item rather then 5. I politely asked him to list a gun alternative or just not count the gun so that us that cannot carry can still have 5 (or however many things). The conversation became ridiculous fast. It went to arguing about whether or not the mentally disabled should be able to legally carry guns to "you apparently have no idea how video editing works. I cant go add another item now". Apparently he forgot to read "future videos". Anyway, just wanted to thank you for not really counting the gun!

Good advice on the Trauma Kit! I just used my Tax Refund on a BLS bag (Basic Life Support), that is the single most important gear to have during an emergency. I am a qualified EMT-Basic but not everyone needs that type of training in order to respond to an Airway Breathing or Circulation Emergency, you only need to be a first responder. next 2, the med kit and firearm. well before these are attained, i thnk the knowledge to use them should be first. someone with a full trauma kit that thinks it makes them a doctor can very easily take a situation from bad to worse in a heartbeat. same goes with a gun, if you plan on using one, you should take the time to be familiar at least, if not proficient with it.

The Handgun (9mm is great because it's the most common centerfire pistol round in use) would be a better choice if you think that there might be any possibility that you'll have to take it on the road (bug out). The long guns are better for static defense and the shotgun IS very versatile.

Water collecting, filtering-purifying, fire starter, insulating, yurt within a yurt survival housing, cordage/bow strings, trapping fish or game, wind/fallout barriers, body wrapping, dehydrating, furniture building, hammocks, on and on and on... Pretty much agree with most of what you said. My issue with preppers is they believe in shit and they believe in fans and they think Mad Max was a real person. Our approach is to buy 2. Canned food will outlast you, so buy one to eat and one to stock. The problem I have with beans and rice is they're both water and fuel intensive. A can of soup has a lot of fluid in it. And you eat it every day, so you're not stuck with some freeze dried crap. And, yes, I have a bin of freeze dried crap. Ammo. First, look at popular and effective rounds. For me that's 22LR and 9mm. I can kill you at 300 yards with the 22. Can't do that with a shotgun. You get closer, out comes the 9mm. I can still kill you at a longer range than a shotgun with the 9mm. Okay, maybe not, but it's pretty much a wash at that range. Bottom line is to prep for reality. And just buy 2. Go to the range, shoot a box, stash a box. I like your video. I would just add a couple of things. Toiletries and drugs. If you have a prescription, ask your doctor for an extra refill. And stock more everyday toiletries. Quality of life is huge when things get bad. Think about it.

    1. Shelter. The elements are your worst enemy.
    2. Water. You need lot's of water and ways to clean it properly.
    3. Food. You need to have a stock pile of non perishable and ways to get fresh food. Salt makes everything better.
    4. Medical supplies.
    5. Help. Believe it or not, having some other hands can make or break your way.
    6. Topographic map, square and compas, drafting pencil.
    7. Tools.
    8. Clothes with more socks than the rest. Cold wet feet you are going to get screwed. Water proof boots.
    9. Training. You can have the greatest gear but if you don't have any training you might as well just throw it all in the river you ninny.
    10. A deck of cards. I always have a deck of cards in my go bag. It helps keep people calm and learn to enjoy the simple things in life.

I love your personal presence and your advice is very well thought out. But PLEASE encourage folks to enroll in first aid-courses! Knowing first aid means knowing a lot about human anatomy, and could help in not freaking out in an emergency of any kind. First aid training should be top 3 for any prepper.

At last! A reasonably sensible video of this type. I was beginning to think everybody involved in the whole "prepper" scene was a clueless nutter.
Realistically, you are planning for 3 - 21 days without utilities - with or without public order issues.
Longer than that and you're unlikely to be staying at home.
You might be planning for a weather event, solar storm, volcanism or whatever and I agree that having drinking water and food on hand that can be rotated is the way to go.
Heating is next for those of us in cold climates and it's an idea to have at least one room with a solid fuel stove and the fuel but by to run it.
First aid kit and fire extinguisher are both good ideas.

Most people don't know it, but the most universal firearm choice of pioneers was a smooth bore musket or "fowler". These guns could shoot ball (slugs), or buckshot, or buck and ball, or birdshot interchangeably depending upon what the pioneers needed at the time.
A modern 12 guage holds the same position.

If the utilities are down for some time one of the important things will be the toilet. The one you have is fine, just no water.
Having the right supply of bags converts this to a dry toilet cheap)-- and toilet paper stored. A supply of larger 3mil bags to put smaller one use bags in - can be carted outside later. also candles will be very needed for a long time if you want light.
Four plumbers candles on a plate in your kitchen sink will heat food fast - use the oven grill over the sink to cook. Adapt the things you have. 200 candles (discount) is not unrealistic. And bags for the toilet help a lot. Add warm clothes and stored water and food and you are good. Don't underestimate pitch black -- no electricity gets dark fast, we are used to ambient light and it will be gone.

Rossi matched pair isn't as fast as a pump.but even less moving parts and you have many options. For say a 12/ga barrel and a 22/lr. Plus polymer. Stocks can hold.ammo ,ferro.rods,small. Edged tools. And fishing kit.if it applies.to your.area. wire.snares. many options. Imo.for a lack of rapid for. With practice. You can still put rounds down range even with a break action and it'll make you consider. Your shots more accurately. Great list. Thanks for the video.

Luggable loo. If you expect to remain in your house, you have a couple other options. If water is plentiful (streams, rain, whatever) you can just pour a bucket of water in the toilet and it will flush fine. If not, go to costco and pick up a couple boxes of trash can liners and keep those on hand. Empty the water out of the toilet, then line toilet with the liner as though it is a garbage can. Have it hang over the sides outside of the toilet. When its getting full, or too ripe to put up with, just tie it shut and haul it away for disposal. Sanitary and most important easy, which will be a rare commodity in a situation like that.
