    It's always good when this poem receives some attention. My comment is that I didn't imagine the 'film' or the 'puny flaps and freaks' to mean a piece of soot. Rather, this is a beautiful interpretation of a fading flame's lingering moments as it barely holds on, and momentarily envelopes what's left of the materials that fuel the flame before it finally dies. The "puny flaps and freaks the idling Spirit By its own moods interprets", for me references the unpredictable nature and motions of a flame and from which the spirit finds inspiration. I can't really see how soot would compare.

    Nothing about poetry is more true than your first comment: poetry is meant to be heard! People aren't meant to just look at sheet music. The original creator's intent is that it be performed! I hope that the subsequent discussion went well!
