I watched the entire video just because of how much I enjoyed that. I learned a good amount because of it… everyone else would’ve forced me to watch for the reveal at the end… which would’ve caused me to skip to the end. Thanks for keeping it real
Hey Matt. I have been uploading clips to Pond5 for about 5 years. At first, I uploaded to several stock houses like Adobe (made some money), but ultimately I made an exclusive arrangement with Pond5 to receive 60% of the sale price of each clip. I have about 300 clips that I've accumulated over the years including shots I purposely went out to shoot just for stock. Frankly, I really enjoy doing these shots for Pond5 since I'm on my own, can take as much time as I like w/o a producer looking over my shoulder saying we need to finish it up and be in another location by 2pm, etc. What is also fascinating is seeing what shots sell. I have a shot I did years ago of people in midtown Manhattan crossing the street, a very telephoto shot, that sold 11 times. Others that I thought were great, never. Go figure. I would definitely love to see you do more stock shot videos.
Pond5 got acquired by Shutterstock in May of last year and while I’m hoping they don’t make any changes to it, knowing how Shutterstock acts like the Amazon of the stock image market they’ll probably kick off a faster race to the bottom with lower pricing and lower rates. Hope I’m wrong though cause I like Pond5 even with their lackluster sales.
I build my video editing PC based solely on your videos and advice, and it is a savage set up to say the least. There is something about you that just seems very genuine. You're easily one of the best subscription I follow. Thank you for the solid content.
Definitely interested in more content like this, would love to see what you think of selling through wirestock, black-box or other companies that send out stock to all the other sites at once. Also being a videographer myself, we still do take photos here and there, would like to sell some of those too!
I've been struggling to get this going. THANK YOU for your encouragement and letting us see your process. Yes do more! You rock it. (And are so darn cheery when rocking!)
This is the most sincere video I've ever seen on this topic. Usually people make big statements about how quick and easy is it to earn the big bucks on stock video or photo and it is really not that easy! Would love to see more videos on this topic!
Great video and a very clever way to describe it. I enjoyed it tbh. A fresh look from a fresh perspective. Just a couple add ons, you don't sell your media, rather the buyer selects a license, there are multiple levels of licensing, I have sold them all but never sold the rights to any of my media, I would but the opportunity has never presented itself. I have videos I have sold over and over again, you don't even need a fancy camera, my canon got ran over so I started using my iPhone 12, and I was shocked when they started to outsell my pro videos, so I thought that's what they were but come to find out, lifestyles and current events outsell everything. I am an editorial videographer so I am always looking at trends, newsworthy as people will be telling the same stories for years, most of my clips are timeless. I have 20 year old footage from my early days, it sells too. You don't have to be a wedding photographer or know all the fancy terms, whip out your phone and go. I found value in this video, so I want to add some back. This is NOT a get rich quick scheme like Mattt said, you will put a LOT of hours in for little to no reward. It takes years to even break past the $5k mark.. I made about 10 grand last year, far from where I want to. be but if you have ever played world of warcraft, I did for 10 years, it is exactly like that lol, grind man.. I film everyday, all of the time. One thing I will say, do not buy cheap hard drives to store your masters on, never delete, I also sell screenshots from gopro footage, I will sell the sound too at some point, another reason is, you will get better and better at editing and will realize you messed up later on but if you still have the masters, you are good!!! Biggest advice I can add. I know that was a lot but trust me, this is a deep ocean and there are no limits except time. Peace
Love this video Matt, great to see an insight into something most of us can do. Giving us your real numbers helps us all decide whether it is worth the effort. I will certainly be giving it a go!
Hi Matt, this video was very helpful to me for understanding the best way to go about placing my clips on multiple sites. About 4 years ago I put five video clips on Adobe stock, but haven't done anything since then. This is the year I upload more! Thanks for the inspiration! 😀👍
The absolute key to selling stock is volume and uploading regular. Also keep in mind that it can take an image several month to recycle itself into a sale. Sometimes I will upload and wont see it start selling till a year later. The reason why most people stop is that dont see an instant income, stock is a long game.
This was great! I sell on two of the sites you mentioned, but now I'll be expanding to the other two as well. I love the idea of passive income and the idea of uploading footage I was going to take anyway for something else. I'll be following you to see what you put out next.
Yes please Matt, another one on this subject. I am about to start gathering clips together and will make a point over shooting extra clips on future jobs - would be great to hear more. Very helpful.
Matt, nice video. Glad you are sharing this info with film makers. I no longer play the stock photo and video market as things have drastically changed after 2008. Before 2008 royalty free stock was a small market. Much better money was made in rights managed. I was a fairly big player at the time and was pulling in anywhere between $75,000 to $125,000 a year in stock photography (Corbis and Getty). I mention this only to share how the market has changed. This is also what happened to musicians when iTunes and other music downloading sites started up. This is the reason many of those musicals from the 80's are on the road preforming concerts in their 70's today. I think you gave an honest assessment to folks about the money they can expect early on. Thanks for sharing and I encourage folks who want to make a few extra bucks to upload your photos and videos and see if it is for them.
I agree. I got in 2006 and worked my butt off in this Stock Footage dream as a young man. Apart from the diminishing payout, your location and quality content play an important part. Because of this, some people, like me, never made any money except for a penny or two for so much hard work.
same here. did great in stock photography in 2010 to about 2012 then alot happened. race to the bottom. did a pivot to real estate and wedding photography and killing it now.
can't there be a way to just cut out the middle man? By creating a designated youtube channel showcasing your (watermarked) stock footage with a button to purchase and then the buyer can download a clean version? that would be great. But Im probably dreaming too big
yes it's very interesting, I filmed lots of videos while freelancing a couple of years ago and looking forward to developing this stock footage skill going forward
I'd love to know your metadata and keyword process of how to properly describe your stock footage for people to find! Thanks for the great video Matt! I will be exploring more on how to diversify my income as a filmmaker
I appreciate your frankness about the reality of selling stock - I hate that photo/video is becoming "commoditzed" but you can't fight it. Always good to look at all potential sources of income from imaging these days. I still think being a videographer/photographer is easier than making money as a musician!

Matt great video. Just starting out a little late in the business of selling footage. Working on getting my Drone license 1st. Then focusing on getting some great footage !!
Super useful to know! I'd love to watch a video on types of stock footage that does well, and what resolutions, codecs, and framerates stock platforms prefer. Cheers!
Excellent Matt - huge interest and am now off to see what can be done with a combination of aerial drone, land based and subsea drone(ROV) footage in the guise of SkyWaterDrone!
Hi Matt, thanks and yes, please - more of this. I have so many photographs and drone shots, that I maybe could do something with. I would love to learn more. Formats, length, …
Thank you for the video. I think that this is great. I have always wanted to do this more. This will help me getting started! Love to hear more about your process and experience with it.
Great video!!! Would love to see a video on the process of applying for art grid, requirements etc etc and as many details as possible lol...thanks again 👍

Thanks Matt! This was super encouraging. Having thoughts about leaving corporate life for full time Film making. This helped me realise that it’s possible. Cheers buddy
This is a super rare case. Not everyone can make money from stock footage. Don't buy into the youtuber hype before leaving your job. make sure your filmmaking career is stable before leaving
It's possible but be aware that running your own business is a lot of work. I would build up your business until it is making more $$$ than your current job before quitting if possible.
Matt, I actually found your footage on Lightstock working on an editing project for a client. Lightstock could do a better job pulling out the good footage. I think they sort by popular. I dug into your footage and put alot of it into the project. It was like finding a gold nugget.
About a year or so before the pandemic, I started shooting stock uploading to Blackbox. They sold themselves as a major resource for stock footage for multiple stock footage sites. I have yet to sell anything through them. My library of stock footage isn't extensive, yet. But, to be honest, I never thought about approaching Pond5, Adobe, or Artgrid directly. Your video changes that. So, I will start shooting again and trying these sites that you mention.
I got a friend who does this kind of thing, sans video, with the vector drawings he sells. A small report and reflection on how much he made, where, and what sold the most. It's cool to have that open mindset in an industry where most people are scared of talking prices because of competition ❤
Thanks Matt! That was really useful indeed, and, yes, please make more like this talking about ways to make money with video (outside of shooting gigs). Thanks!
I have dozens of time lapses. While it's a fun hobby that I do without expecting money, the camera's and lenses I've bought have become quite expensive. Thank you for posting this video Matt. This is a great idea. I will give this a try.
Thanks. I would be interested in other tips like this. I have mostly photos though and thousands of them with people without model releases. Talking about when you need releases might help some of us. I'm thinking of the buildings in the Dallas skyline, for example. No releases for them?
Question! If I sell some of my footage originally captured for TH-cam can the purchasers of my clips flag me for copyright violation? I definitely have a ton of nature footage from the Pacific Northwest that could be licensable.
Hey Matt, i love this video. please make more video about stock footage business.... I am curious about you experience Lightstock and Art Grid in more detail.
1:35 this mindset has brought my life new meaning. I think I may have to rewrite my packages to be in value tacos instead of dollars.
This is the way
Taco is average 3-4 dollars per one here in New York. I can not afford to eat it.
@@whoismatt hi on Artlist can someone make money who makes music? Can sell them?
But I'm ok with giving away a dollar, but I would never give my taco away.
Haha😂
Rare TH-cam moments : the content in the title is relayed in the first 10 seconds 🎉
😂👍
Matt actually does this pretty consistently and I appreciate it!
