Much appreciation, @ Wired UK. I really enjoyed Bertrand Piccard's detailed explanation of the cockpit controls and how he navigates the Solar Impulse 2 throughout the extended flight. This was incredible and quite an honor.

Just a question, how do you maintain your spatial orientation and concentration if you are waking up every 20 minutes to check if everything is alright. Because as far as I know, without REM sleep, you will eventually lose your adaptation to your environment and will not be able to sustain your piloting skills. So, do you really wake up every 20 minutes or at least getting 2 hours of straight sleep to refreshen your brain?
    Best regards.

What an impractical system! The amount of material and capital to build this thing is ridiculous, all to carry one person? I think the technology could be put to better use, but this could be the first step to innovating such equipment for feasible application to aerospace.

You do realize every plane is complicated right ? Not only the solar ones.
Maybe gliders could be considered more simple.

One step at a time , to gain confidence must prove it can be done. That's mega achievement.
