Very timely as I am just starting to mill logs. First up was a white ash... like hickory quite hard. It helped me a lot to see the finish cuts close up. It is pretty wood. Also your walk cadence. I may have missed it but are both blades similar in price? Another useful lesson. Much obliged.

You caught me Robert, I didn't think to check the prices! The Woodland Mills website should have the current blade price, but the Woodmizer blades came from a local sharpening shop, last summer. I don't recall exactly what I paid, but I remember thinking it was quite reasonable at the time. Appreciate the kind words!

Could you do this demonstration once more, but than with a softwood?

Hmmm.. maybe, depending upon what type of milling we are doing? We'll see! Thanks for the suggestion!

how hot can the blades get after cutting ? does the water disperse the heat well enough to change right after cutting ?

Not as hot as you might think, just barely above warm. Of course, that may be because I'm such a slow sawyer! lol. Thanks for commenting!

Thank-you for taking the time to document the test Tony. It's rather difficult to even-off the variables. As well as the fastest cutting blade, another important performance evaluation would be the longevity between sharpening's, or the # of sharpening's before scrapping the blades. Assuming no nails or cutting of the log stops of course!!!! That would be a long and difficult thing to test but I'm sure over time one could simply get a feel for it. A lot of folks have been singing the praises of the Ripper 37 blades, especially wrt the longevity. Do you have any experience with these? Also, assuming you are using the Woodmizer blades on a regular basis, how are you sharpening them? Do you use the Woodland Mills sharpener? Thank-you again for sharing your experiences.

Great question on the number of sharpenings.. I don't have enough time on the 747's yet to be able to speak to lifespan, but I do believe they stay sharp longer than the Woodland blades. I haven't tried the Ripper 37's yet, but I would like too. Would make a great three-way comparison video as well! I have a great, local sharpening shop where I take all my blades. There are times when I'm tempted to purchase a sharpener, maybe there's one in our future? We'll see.
Thanks for the comment and the kind words, both are much appreciated!

The ripper 37 cut well but they have a tendency to break. A lot of sawyers in the group have been having this issue.

You can’t really compare a 7 degree to a 10 degree. And woodland mills doesn’t make their own blades they use Lennox woodmizer and one other company. That being said thanks for taking the time to demonstrate that for us. I wouldn’t have the patience lol.

Agreed, like what was stated in the video, a 7 degree blade is intended mainly for hard or frozen wood. Whereas the 10 degree blade is more of a compromise between hardwood and softwood.
I wasn't suggesting that Woodland manufactured their blades, rather their blade is the one that comes with their mills, therefore it's a "Woodland"blade.
Happy to do the videos! Thanks for the comment!
