To understand SHINee's "Good Evening" MV what you need to know is that it had only been less than 6 months when this MV came out since Jonghyun died -- he died Dec. 18, 2017 -- and this song and MV is all about how SHINee and Shawols have been grieving and are finally ready to begin to heal and come out of the darkness into the light. The album is called The Story of Light and it's all about finding the light out of the darkness, etc. It's about how the members are learning to continue on without Jonghyun and find happiness and light in a situation that will forever be difficult. May 25, 2018, when this MV was released, was SHINee's 10th anniversary so this was also important because it was a comeback to commemorate their 10 years as a group.
The choreography for "Good Evening" is very deliberate. The reason the choreography is like that is because it depicts them going through the grieving process and it tells the story of all the emotions they went through and how, now at the end, they have made the choice to continue on as a group and keep on running, etc. The choreography is really complex and beautiful and really fits the song well. It becomes clearer once you see it in its entirety and start to understand the story behind it all. You really should check out SHINee's dance practice video for "Good Evening" to see the full choreography. (You should also check out SHINee's rollercoaster version of the choreography that they performed on Weekly Idol.)
Fun fact: the choreographer for this song was Koharu Sugawara, who was featured in Taemin's "Move" MV, as well as choreographed several of Taemin's other songs, and also collaborated with several other choreographers on Taemin's "Criminal" MV. As you may remember, she is a famous Japanese choreographer who has known Taemin for years, so it was really special she was able to work on this project because she got to be a part of SHINee's healing process.
In the MV, not only is the extra shadow that appears when they look into the tunnel/well at the end speculated to be Jonghyun's shadow, but, as you are aware, the fox is thought to also represent him. Onew intensely stares into the eyes of the fox, almost as if he is communicating with the fox through his thoughts, and, to me, it's as if he is sharing a moment with Jonghyun. There is a fox in the story "The Little Prince" and "The Little Prince" was one of Jonghyun's favorite stories. Plus, a fox often represents the afterlife and the spirit of someone who has passed on reincarnated in many cultures.
Also in the beginning, as you noticed, there is an empty chair. An empty chair is often used to represent the spirit of someone who has passed on as well.
But that's just a small portion of the hidden messages within this MV. If you really delve in deep you will discover that the whole MV can be connected to SHINee forever being 5 members and them including Jonghyun in all that they do. There are 5 trees at the end which could represent the fact that, as Onew has said, even though you may only see 4 members on stage, SHINee will forever be a group of 5.
They are in a room full of cameras and their images are being projected on the TV screens, which I see as representing the fact that because SHINee is living in the public eye they can never escape from always being watched by the public. Which doesn't allow them the private space to really grieve and to express themselves and they are always being judged (both the members in their grieving process and what Jonghyun had to go through and what ultimately led him to feeling the way he did, etc.)
This MV used a lot of green and aqua blue light to depict the cool and somber feel of the story, but it also was used because pearl aqua blue/green is SHINee's fan color and it was used to represent Jonghyun's presence all around them and the support and solidarity they felt with their fans, Shawols.
The story in the MV is showing the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance) the members went through and how they have now at the end of the MV started to find their way out of it and have made the choice to continue to keep on running and continue on as a group, etc. But I could go on and on ... every part of this MV has a deeper message and meaning, you just have to open yourself up to the fact that everything in this MV has multiple meanings and purposes.
You see Minho with those oranges, which is really just a giant pile of orange peels, because this part is supposed to depict how he is blindly just going through life, not even able to process what is happening around him. He is not even looking at the peels. It is like his body and mind is on autopilot.
If you notice none of the members ever make eye contact with the camera the entire MV and even in their live performances of the song, you will never see them look at the camera. This was done deliberately as well because they wanted to show how in their grief they were blind to everything that was going on around them and they were closed off to the world and didn't care what was happening outside of themselves even though the world was watching their every move.
The part where Key smashes the piano is only one example of of how SHINee shows how they felt for a while after Jonghyun died -- they were angry at everything, including music, and in a way they were blaming "music" and their careers for what happened, and in the MV they were taking their anger out on the piano, etc.
The plastic sheet and them flailing under water is supposed to represent how they felt suffocated in their grief and how grieving while in the public eye made them feel trapped at times, etc.
Every scene, every image, every movement in their dance, every look, every moment they stand still or look blankly, etc. is very deliberate and is there for a reason.
This comeback is part of a three part release celebrating SHINee's 10th anniversary. So they released 3 mini albums with 5 songs each in their The Story of Light trilogy and they had 3 comebacks each 2 weeks apart to showcase their lead track on each of their albums. "Good Evening" and "All Day All Night" were their comeback tracks from Episode 1, " I Want You" and "Who Waits for Love" were their comebacks from Episode 2 and Episode 3 was "Our Page" and "Tonight". Their comeback lasted 6 weeks to represent the fact that it was SHINee's 6th "full length" album. At the end of the six weeks they released a special final MV to celebrate their anniversary and all they have been through over the past 10 years with their song "Countless." "Countless" was an epilogue track that was added to their repackaged Story of Light album.
FYI: Make sure when you watch "Our Page" that you also pair the MV with the official lyric video. Every word of "Our Page" was wrote by the members and it's all about Jonghyun. If you know what the lyrics are about it will help you to understand the story being told in the MV. (It would be helpful to understand the lyrics first BEFORE watching the MV.)
Before this comeback SHINee had just come off their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) world tour and the members were doing solo activities as they worked on what was going to be an epic 10th anniversary comeback. With Jonghyun's passing, that set them back a few months because they were grieving. It also took time to figure out how they were supposed to function without Jonghyun. But SHINee never really stopped working. Two months after Jonghyun died, SHINee held their SHINee World -- The Best from Now On Concert in Japan and they pretty much were working nonstop until Onew, Key and Minho's enlistment. That concert had originally been planned as part of their 10th anniversary celebration and it had already been sold out. So SHINee felt obligated to honor their fans and continue the concert despite everything, which meant some extra work, because they already had been planning everything with Jonghyun. So they had to quickly go back to the drawing board and figure out how to do it with only 4 members and still honor Jonghyun's memory.
In SHINee's fan meeting/concert for their 10th anniversary the members all vowed that SHINee will always be 5 and that Jonghyun will always be involved in everything they do. I think we are always going to have reminders of him in all that SHINee does from now on, and that is the way it should be. He was loved and will never be forgotten, and when possible, should always be involved in things that have to do with SHINee. OT5 forever and ever.
I think we can feel Jonghyun's presence and influence in this album and songs because a lot of what made SHINee's sound uniquely SHINee (and this album is no exception) was because of Jonghyun. He not only shaped SHINee's sound because he was the main vocal of the group, but he also wrote and composed around 40% of SHINee's songs, so he can be felt in everything they do. It wouldn't be SHINee if we didn't hear his influence shine through in their music, that is what makes SHINee's sound so unlike any other.
And, because of that, I think from now on we will always be searching for the hidden messages and moments that represent Jonghyun in everything SHINee does.

Yeah it's a lot to take in, us as fans looking at them and trying to understand how the are feeling and them also letting us know in their own way how they feel. You can only really imagine what they are feeling because we only see what they've allowed us to see (Which is Fair), behind closed doors they've been through so much together, even before they debuted, so there are some things that we would not even be able to understand.

To help explain what is happening in SHINee's "Tell Me What to Do" MV, the members are all playing a group of friends which also includes this girl. How I interpret the story is that they all have been friends with this girl for a very long time and Taemin has always been in love with her, but unfortunately, what you see is that she is in love with Minho and they are dating. However, Taemin is super jealous and his jealousy has gotten to the point where he can no longer hide his anger and disappointment -- that's why you see him acting kind of crazy and really angry. That's why you see him getting drunk and silently watching Minho and the girl with that seething, jealous look on his face. It is also why you see him crazily pick up that gun and wave it around like he is drunkenly joking with everyone and making bad choices.
It's supposed to be about a group of teenagers/young 20-something guys hanging out together and partying in an abandoned warehouse or construction site, etc. You see them having fun riding around in the car together, but if you notice Taemin is sitting there jealously watching Minho and the girl and wishing it was him who she was in love with.
I interpret the floating guns as a metaphor, where Taemin is surrendering to everything and he is struggling to figure out how to cope with all his feelings, etc.
You see Minho and Taemin get in a fight and Minho is essentially saying, "Hey man, it's not my fault she is in love with me and not you ... you need to back off and get over yourself ... snap out of it ... what is wrong with you?", etc.
Minho always writes his own rap sections in SHINee's songs, so the rap was given that flow for a very specific reason. it is meant to be completely different than the rest of the song because it represents the anger and frustration he is feeling at that moment.
So the song is called "Tell Me What To Do" because the rest of the members are pretty much saying "Tell me what to do ... What should I do to fix this problems in our friendship and how do we go back to the way we used to be?", etc. It's a coming of age story about friendship and the things that can happen in someone's life that can cause a rift between friends.
In the end, you see Taemin drop the lighter, and some say the lighter is what catches the car on fire and it symbolizes the end to their youthful innocence. But you also see Minho and Han So Hee get in the car and when Minho turns the key to start the car it blows up because you see the gas line has been cut, or something has been tampered with. Some say Taemin is so jealous that he blows up the car thinking that if he can't have the girl, than he doesn't want anyone to have her. However, he didn't consider the fact that Minho might also be in the car with her. So, he also kills Minho. It is speculated that's why Taemin looks so shocked right after you see the car catch fire because he realizes what he has just done.
It's definitely a darker concept, but you shouldn't feel too sad, because at this point nothing had happened with SHINee yet and it doesn't really have anything to do with this MV. It's only after the fact, that we now can give the story a deeper meaning.
"Tell Me What to Do" came out in 2016 and it was the lead tack on SHINee's repackaged 1 and 1 album which is a partner album to their 1 of 1 album and title track MV "1 of 1," which has a retro '90s theme.
The only saving grace to this story is that we know that SHINee is too much of a close-knit group to ever let something like this happen to them for real and, that in terms of SHINee, this story is so far from reality that this would never happen with their friendship. Once again this was a departure from anything we have ever seen from SHINee before, and it's unlike anything they have every done as a concept for an MV. But it was exactly sHINee-like in every way.
You should really watch a video of SHINee performing this song live on Jonghyun's radio program called "Blue Night". The radio show was hosted by Jonghyun. He hosted the daily radio program for 3 years. During "Tell Me What to Do" promotions the other SHINee members were guests on the show and Jonghyun had to do double duty that night as both host and guest. You should really watch this clip th-cam.com/video/ZuWJIZLPylE/w-d-xo.html. This was my favorite performance of "Tell Me What to Do," and not only are their vocals magnificent, but it also shows you a little glimpse into their goofy fun personalities as well.
You should also check out a live performance of "Tell Me What to Do." Because, even though there is no dancing in the MV, this was one of their lead promotional tracks for their 1 and 1 repackaged album, so they performed it on music programs and in concert. This choreography is so uniquely SHINee. I think you will fall even more in love with the song, once you see the full performance. :D

As I was watching the MV it was like I was watching a drama. I became so invested in the storyline. It really just shows that SHINee can excel in any concept they try.

"View" came out in 2015, and it is another one of the numerous songs that was wrote by Jonghyun. Jonghyun is highly respected as a singer/songwriter and he was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. SHINee were actually the ones to introduce deep house style music to the Kpop industry with "View."
"View" was even voted by the Korean public as one of the songs that needs to make a comeback in 2021, because it was so ahead of its time in 2015 that people didn't appreciate it for what it was. It has now become one of SHINee's most popular songs. (Variety shows and commercials, etc. use "View" all the time as the soundtrack whenever they want to describe how beautiful something is.) Check out SHINee's recent appearance on the variety show MMTG part 1: th-cam.com/video/siAsCLpgZTI/w-d-xo.html and part 2: th-cam.com/video/6GEawttTotU/w-d-xo.html when SHINee came on the show to discuss the popularity of "View" and talk about their legacy in the Kpop industry, etc. (They even performed "View" in their recent Beyond Live virtual concert earlier this year as a special showcase for MMTG.)
If you pay attention to the lyrics for "View" you will see that the song is about being mesmerized and sort of brainwashed by the beautiful view as seen within a dream. The MV seems to be about living in the dream of being like a normal group of young men hanging out with friends and having fun in the summer without anything to worry about. However, SHINee have been kidnapped by the girls, and although they end up having fun hanging out together, I think why we hear the police sirens at the end is because the police are coming to rescue SHINee. If you notice, even though they are having fun most of the time, whenever the girls get close to them, SHINee pushes them away, or looks away.
So SHINee are not necessarily 100% OK with everything that is happening.
In this MV Onew is 25, Jonghyun had just turned 25, Key is 23, Minho is 23 and Taemin is 21. All the members are adults. ;) Not teenage boys because they're drinking, and if they were teens they wouldn't be able to show them with alcohol in the MV. (But yes, young men.)
Fun fact: This MV was filmed in Thailand, so the actresses are all Thai. The funny thing is, the girls don't speak Korean. The SHINee members said they really didn't interact much with the girls when not filming because they couldn't communicate with them.
And, if you want to see how much fun they had making the MV, you should check out the behind the scenes footage. Part 1: th-cam.com/video/Q4Qj-W3-KcI/w-d-xo.html and Part 2: th-cam.com/video/awMLgONRV1c/w-d-xo.html
As I think you know, Key is SM's director of fashion, and he often is the one that designs SHINee's outfits for their MVs and concerts. So, the look and concept for this MV was all created by Key in collaboration with their stylists. He decided he wanted their looks to emulate skater-boy fashion and in order to accomplish that they actually went to the local markets and purchased the clothes for this MV and their comeback stage outfits right off the rack. Which had them setting their own trend yet again, and doing something that no one else was doing at the time. (Everything SHINee does is trendsetting, including their fashion. They are known for their huge influence on the fashion industry in Korea. SHINee is the group that is known for being the first to do almost everything. They start the trend and everyone else follows.)
To see SHINee's "View" choreography better you will have to check out a comeback stage or, better yet, one of their concert performances of "View." :D You really need to see a live version to appreciate it. Nothing is better than SHINee live. ;D

I love reading your comments, always gives me more information that would take me forever to find out myself. After re listening to the song and watching the MV I realised about the sirens coming to take them back. The concept of the song/MV is so good, they've been in the spotlight for so many years and have grown form teenagers to young men in the public eye that sometimes you can forget that they are humans also. That they would like to live a "carefree" life from time to time outside of public view, but when they do that they are still going to be respectable young men. I love this song so much and it is still something that is fitting for now sound wise. TXT are a group that come to mind that are currently doing the carefree, friends road trip vibe type of songs, and I'm sure they got inspiration from SHINee like many others have.

"Hello" was released in 2010 -- 2 years after their debut. SHINee's look in this MV is totally the boyfriend look. The whole aesthetic of the MV is supposed to give them a cute, approachable boyfriend image. The story is how they are trying to work up the courage to say hello to the girl they like and to ask her to be their girlfriend. :D Jonghyun is sitting on the step waiting for the girl to come home and he has a gift in a box, Key has a ring, Onew has flowers, Taemin -- because he is only 17 in this MV -- has that plushy that he is decorating for the girl he likes and Minho has a giant teddy bear in the passenger seat of his car. LOL
It's a pretty simple story about just being brave enough to say hello and confess your feelings.
Fun fact: We don't need to know who is on the other side of the door because we are supposed to imagine it's us who they are coming to see. Shawols are SHINee's girlfriends and they are trying to work up the courage to say hello to us. LOL
So in this MV, Onew and Jonghyun were 20, Key was 19, Minho was 18 and Taemin was 17.
Jonghyun with that little girl is so precious. If you want to see more of SHINee and Jonghyun with little kids, if you haven't already, you should check out the reality show SHINee did called "Hello Baby." It was a show where the members of SHINee spent several weeks raising a little 3 year old boy and they were supposed to be his surrogate "Appas" (fathers). It's extremely cute and you can find episodes of the show with English subs on TH-cam. All the members of SHINee are actually really great dad material and they all have a soft spot for little kids -- although little children kind of make Onew nervous sometimes, LOL. You should also see Minho when he spends time with little kids, it will make your heart melt. Check out th-cam.com/video/yX0mpQ0_UZQ/w-d-xo.html where Minho spends the day with 3 of the kids who are on the reality show "Return of Superman," or the episode of "Return of Superman" where Minho takes one of the cast member's kids on a trip to China. th-cam.com/video/cFz5R9jFY1M/w-d-xo.html I can't stop smiling when SHINee interacts with little kids. SHINee are going to be such great dads someday -- their kids are going to be so lucky.

I did think at the end that the reason we didn't see who the girl was, was because they were implying that it was for all the Shawols out there. I will have to have a look for Their reality show Hello Baby. It's funny you mentioned Return of Superman because I watched a few of the clips that were suggested to me, and it's so cute. It was the one were Minho was the mascot and surprised the kids.
