- Thailand's pacific type steam locomotive 824 and 850 were built in 1949 and 1950, respectively. They were sent to Thailand for the WW2 compensation from Japan. They were once retired around 1970s, but now beautifully restored, and run a few times for a year as special trains. On Aug.12.2018, they ran from Bangkok to Nakornpathom to celebrate queen's birthday.
The 953… fun fact for most of you guys that didn’t know, the 824 used to do these special trips with the 953. However it broke down and is kept at this one shed that is used to store 4 operational steam trains. However the 953 has been sitting there since 2010? Or maybe 2012 as it’s waiting for repair parts. I remember asking the engineers and they claimed that repairs could be as expensive as 9,000,000 Thai Baht
The carriages hauled by these locos were based on Japan’s series 10 carriages and exported by Japanese rolling stock manufacturers.
Cracking locos! They bear a striking resemblance to their Japanese cousins, and are well-engineered and handsome machines. I adore the copper capped chimneys and other fittings that enhance their liveries more so than their Japanese counterparts. @2:11
