Another commenter who did not see the movie, but wanted to mention in terms of character design envy is a mini "cute" version of disgust. So to your point of how they could have made existing emotions more complicated, it would have been cool if disgust and envy had merged into one character at the end. Not sure what the other ones would have merged with but I think that would have been an interesting way to tell the story

I agree! I wish they have pushed the limits of existing characters. Feels like the easy way out to continously invent new emotions

I didn't see the movie. But I agree - if anxiety is an emotion, and emotions can't be labeled as good or bad, how can it be a villian?

Exactly!!!! Actions are obviously influenced by emotions but emotions themselves are neither good nor bad

the film does not portray anxiety as a villain. she tries to help riley throughout the movie and the movie clearly acknowledges her value but she ended up being overly controlling. the movie doesnt even label her as “bad,” just acknowledges that we shouldnt let anxiety control our every action. shes an ANTAGONIST, not a villain, theres a difference.

@homiee590 I mean I personally think anxiety could be trying to help and still be a villain - they aren't mutually exclusive. Also while I do agree that antagonists aren't necessarily villains, the movie did set up anxiety that way to be the ringleader of the other emotions and order the old emotions to be literally locked up In a vault. Seems rather villainous to me 🤷‍♀️

@@LaurenSchwartzbardFor me what differentiates an antagonist and a villain is intent and morality. Every emotion anxiety included wants Riley to be happy and thrive. (ie. She was clearly unsettled when the results of her actions cause Riley to develop an inferiority complex) If anything, Anxiety’s actions is just a more extreme version of what Joy did to Sadness in the first film, suppressing them for what she thinks is best for Riley.
IMO she sounds more like an over controlling parent who just wants the best for their kid than an evil person trying to control the world or whatever. Her morality/stance never changes and I wouldn’t even say shes really “redeemed” or “punished” at the end of the film, she only toned herself down a bit yet she’s still kept around and thats because there’s nothing really wrong with her mindset, clearly it’s healthy to have a certain amount of anxiety, the issue was letting it control your EVERY action and suppressing your other emotions in favor of it. Which to me perfectly encapsulates my experience with GAD.

@homiee590 I'm happy that for you it felt representative! I also have GAD and for me it felt a bit demeaning and cruel because I dont think of anxiety like that. While anxiety does suppress other emotions, for me it doesn't feel violent (literally locking them away) so much as very confused. I also don't think anxiety controls my life, more like disrupts it trying to figure out what is going on at all times. But this is why I love movie discourse because what resonates with me doesn't with others and vice versa
