  • Time for another book review and this time it's Matt Haig's new book called The Midnight Library.
Have you read this book? What do you think about the themes in it?
Have you ever thought if you made different choices in your life, where would you be today?
Although initially, we think this is what the theme of the book is about, it's really about something a lot deeper than that and only in moments of clarity do we realise the value of our life today.
    Happy reading :-)

Oh wow, thank you so much Carol. What a lovely reply which I appreciate greatly. Thank you for taking the time to watch, and share your thoughts. Let me know what you think of Midnight Library. I found that some people loved it others not so much. However, I guess that's books for you. If we all had the same reactions, the world would be a boring place. Thanks again. Happy reading.

I have only heard a summary of The Midnight Library. The lives in the book were extremely different from her life, implying that all decisions have extreme consequences. E.g. not quitting her hobby made her top of the world in her sport and changed who of her parents passed away.
The concept reminded me of Bedazzled, but without the humour.

I disagree. We do not make choices early on. We come into the world totally at the mercy of our circumstances. Our primary caregiver determines how we perceive the world in relationship to ourselves. Yes, at some point we are "free" of early influences, but we have to know and understand those influences and how they created us. Few of us will ever know the role our early years played, but for those of us who begin to question and research and put the story together will come understanding of how we were created, W can become autonomous beings once we begin to do some research and the genie is out of the bottle. We can become more and more responsible for dealing with why we are the way we are.
Nora did not know the source of her depression: her childhood. She thought she was broken. It isn't an easy road to go down. Haig's suggestion that we should not complain and simply take responsibility is like telling a diabetic who has never been to doctor and had blood work that he should know he is a diabetic and fix his diet, etc. I think this is where his book fails to be beneficial. He brings up Nora's childhood very superficially but fails to create a book in the library that tells Nora her story so that she can learn why she is who she is and begin the work of rewriting her story.

Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. I greatly appreciate it. Yes it seems that who we are is an outcome of our experiences, situations, values, environments and energies that have been put on us by our parents and others as we grow and evolve. Also the importance for us to recognise, reflect and consider how they have shaped us and to understand our own true motivations of what we do, why we do and why we think in certain ways and recognising it for what it is. I also believe that once you come to understand yourself, you then can decide what you need to do knowing full well it may need you to make choices that seem huge (cut off toxic family members, etc).
It’s been really interesting of late that I’ve been reading some modern classics that explore this very thing. Some characters focus on “the other”. As in others, society, being the reason for them feeling at a loss but few - really explore their childhood - or what those influences were. We can only glean by scant mentions of their parents or how they grew up. It’s interesting. I think that’s the reason I like books where such characters break free from that. Think of Jane Eyre as an example.
I believe Matt Haig has written a new book that will be published in 2024. It’ll be interesting to read that too. Thanks for watching.

Thanks, yes I have read it. You have to wonder why it is so hard for us to remember we only get this one life- seems like a no brainer but so easily forgotten when we are making decisions. I guess more reminders the better, and i would recommend this book too. Nice to see your channel growing. See you next time.

I read it in two days. Found it a very breezy read. I didn’t know anything about the story or author before hand. Overall a nice read albeit the plot was quite obvious and the plot line very simple, the message also a little preachy.
I know I should expect high brow literature, but I just felt that the execution of the concept was done lightly, it could have been fleshed out a little more or perhaps edited more tightly.
    Nice review.
