  • I go hunting for comic books at a garage sale down the street and come home with one of the BEST COMIC HAULS of my LIFE!!! But I can’t help but wonder… did I pay TOO LITTLE for this amazing collection?

The character art indicates that it's a copy that was sold directly to a comic shop (direct edition) as opposed to a book with a barcode which indicates it was sold to a newsstand or something like that (newsstand edition). Neither is particularly first or second but newsstand books often sell for a premium.

I think you did a great thing, paid the seller more than he was expecting and still came away with a great price. Really happy to see you didn't rip him off and take the 50cent per issue price.
There's a lot of scummy sellers and buyers of comics running around, so it really makes me happy to see someone do right by another person. Good stuff man, looking forward to future videos 👍
Also, holy heck, some phenomenal finds, great pickups!

In my opinion, there's a huge difference between low-balling someone, and accepting their asking price. Paying their asking price doesn't make you a bad person. Personally, I would have Probably said something like, Hey, you know, you got some pretty nice books here. Are you sure you only want 50 cents each? I mean, seriously if I found hulk 181 Or some other Grail I would have told him, maybe lol jk Nice haul cheers.

Considering it came from a 1st hand source (the seller, collector, whatever it may be ) I personally think it’s their responsibility to know the value of what they’re selling. Just my two cents

No perfect way to do these things.

    Good afternoon
I am new to your channel and I love it. I love your ethic! A clear love of the comic! respecting the original owner, and in this case no doubt saving these comics from a sad trash can death. Here in Australia we never get much chance to pick up such hauls.
Like you I used to live on starvation lunch rations to save those valused coins for a comic run to City a long day on a bus to this great little used book store with a crate of comic books. Just thrown it! But this was in thedays where comic books held no value for adults, but I am guessing those that dug through those piles way back then still care about comic books.
    Keep up the great work

Loved this and your following video. Incredibly cool finds. Deffo even more good stuff in there than you highlighted. Love your attitude and enthusiasm and think it was good of ya to give more than he was asking as you still got incredible deals even at what you paid! I'm collecting here in Ireland and would never have a chance to get a fraction of these issues at anything as low as you picked them up for there. Being a small island and not really having a strong history or supply of comics in the country, issues are a LOT harder and more expensive to come by. It's such a buzz when you find a vein of old issues for an affordable price here. Love your taste in covers! I've put together an almost complete set of those Sienkiewicz New Mutants and they're so treasured now. Only one I'm missing is that first full appearance of Legion which would set you back about 20-40$ if I found it here! Good luck with the future hunting and keep the videos coming. Cheers!

personally i think if you are trying to resell then i think the great thing to do is pay a little more even though the seller didn't know. but i think if you are trying to acquire for your personal collection it doesn't matter. pay what they want even if it is way under. there is so much that i am trying to acquire to satisfy my own PC that if i can get a deal and if the seller doesn't care, then there is no harm. That being said i was recently going through a bunch of boxes and i saw keys (first deadpool/wolverine cover, first thunderbolts, etc) that i didn't want for myself but i told the seller to put those aside and price them higher because they were keys. could i have purchased them and resold them to help pay for my own collecting? i guess i could have but that didn't sit right with me. ultimately they were just comics i didn't care about but the market does.

@@lunchmoneycomics much appreciated my friend. I’m sure you will be one of mine. I was talking with some guys about your vlog style. It’s so well done. I’ve tried to record stuff like that and end up scrapping the whole thing. If you’re into sports cards at all check out Chasing Cardboard. Even if you’re not it’s still a great channel and I feel like you could have a similar quality to your videos.

@@AlextheComicHoarder Thanks for the compliment! I’ll check out Chasing Cardboard. As for filming I throw out at least half my material, it’s a lot of work!

Building the relationship was worth the extra money. If you would have been at the garage sale while it was open I would say just pay their asking price but getting to go early and pick at your own pace made it worth more. And you should have really just made a play for everything. If he was willing to do 50 cents a book he probably would have taken $50 a box and been totally happy with that. Have you been able to go back to look at the good stuff yet?

Congrats on the great pickups! Did you guys discuss a price for the whole collection? The "comic cave" wall is pretty amazing. Any suggestions on the set up and materials for a comic wall? Thanks, look forward to watching more of your content!

Hey thanks for watching! We did discuss a price for the whole collection but there was a lot I wasn’t interested in and the sheer number of comics would take up a lot of space. He may still call me though and offer what’s left.
As for the comic wall I think thin shelving is probably the easiest, but I used Vinyl Wall Panel Moulding strips and used a boarded comic as a spacer. Not the most elegant solution but it works!

I think with anything it is the sellers obligation to find the fair market value. Especially if it is the original collector and not a mom or widow type situation. It's the sellers job to get the most and the buyers to pat the least.

So the way a UPC works on a comic book is the first digit is a UPC digit (has nothing to do with the comic book). The next 5 digits identify the publisher (DC, Marvel... etc)... The next set of digits identify the Volume (for example a Volume 1 The Amazing Spider-Man would be a different number than Volume 2 The Amazing Spider-Man. However all the Volume 2 The Amazing Spider-Man will be the same). The last single digit is called a check digit and is used for computations. Then you have the last 5 digits and these are broken into the first 3 digits are the issue number. The fourth digit is the cover version and the last digit is *drum roll* the print run number (if it is a 2nd print - this number will be a 2).
Everything you ever needed to know about a comic book can be figured out by the UPC.
