Terrifying concept - artists weren't fated to live long happy lives if they presented images of their royal subject in images that failed to flatter them. Those paintings are going to be the ~idealized~ version. If those paintings are the best an artist could manage and still look even CLOSE to the king the reality must have been shocking.

@@stephenlangsl67 No. In Chinese society, the Emperor had one TRUE wife and many concubines. They would ideally have many kids as well. But when a royal marriage was to happen, he would "adopt" basically any woman (but usually the daughter of some sort of high class person) and say "Here is my daughter, marry her". The family whose daughter was adopted would be happy because their daughter would gain a social class, and the Emperor was happy because he did not have to lose any of his children. Versus in Europe, Kingdoms of many countries basically kept trading the same bloodline between themselves. China had that new bloodline, and usually didnt actually allow their REAL daughters to be shipped away and married - or if they did they were the children of the concubines, and thus still bringing in new DNA.

I'm of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, and we have similar problems. We are all descended from a group of about 350 people who lived between France and Germany, and 40% of us have genes from one of four "founders" who were part of this population.
There are numerous "Jewish diseases," which sounds like nazi propaganda but in fact refers to rare genetic conditions almost exclusive to us. I and my sister have Alports syndrome, where your kidneys fail early in life and you suffer hearing loss. We had transplants in our teens and are now wearing hearing aids. Both of us are also autistic, nearsighted, and have ADHD.
New York's Hasidic community is adopting kids to deal with this problem too. For my part I have decided not to have children.

He was a very deeply religious person. By the way, John of Austria was a son of Charles I of Spain and brother to Philip II, so a great grand uncle to Charles II. Can someone explain to me how a human being was able to live with no blood, and a heart unable to adequately pump blood (if he had any)? I’m also curious as to how he had necrotized organs encased in his body that did not cause infection that would lead to his death? And how he had a head full of water that didn’t expand as the water kept filling his head and that it had no medical treatment until the late 20th century? I think I’ve got my facts strait. If I’m wrong, please feel free to answer my questions as nicely as I’ve asked them. I am not here to cause shit but to learn so there has been no shade on my part, only curiosity. Thanks!

Youre trying to make sense in a time when lies ruled everyone. The lies could be "divine" marriage, "miracles" or even religious teachings. It was all lies to keep people worried and stupid so you can do whatever you want. The church saying even the king is able to be cursed worked out for them to keep their power. If the next king is able minded or able bodied it also works to strengthen their own legitimacy as the rightful ruler.

I wonder if the Hapsburg jaw is really a result of inbreeding or just another human genetic factor? My maternal cousin brother i.e. my mom's brother's son has exactly the same jaw type and he's the only male child in my mom's side of the family who's having this facial feature. My mom's parents and grandparents (maternal & paternal) were not blood related cousins.
My maternal uncle didn't marry any blood related cousin. His wife however, has a younger brother who's also having the Hapsburg jaw, but his wife's parents and grandparents (maternal & paternal) were not blood related cousins. The said younger brother of my maternal uncle's wife is also the only male child in the family who is having the Hapsburg jaw.

It's probably caused by recessive genes, which means that in normal (non-inbreeding) families, it would pop up every once in a while. In a family where people marry each other, recessive traits become more common and extreme.
