    my dad lived in a socialist/communist Soviet union for much of his life. He worked as a machinist in large factorie/s and says one of the reasons the idea doesn't work is because people are lazy. Nobody wants to work. You get paid the same if you slack or hustle. People had basically no motivation

      @Umut Işık Taghiyev You are sooo wrong. While there are selfish and disgusting people in all countries, capitalism has given more opportunities for people to better themselves than any other system. This is why people will do anything to get to America. There are many more success stories than failure stories. If you only watch American news, you won’t ever see that. You need to live here and get to know people. The ones on the news have plenty of opportunities, they just don’t want to put out effort. Most of them have grown up in the cycle of welfare, and expect that they should have the same things that “the rich folks got”, but without contributing to society. The American media is a major party in the disgusting group of humans. Free press in this country does not equal 100% truth.

      @Umut Işık Taghiyev ye I agree , we can create a system where everyone is happy. The technology is getting better and better we can invent new systems, people would no need to work or only for maintain the machines and would get extra rewards I mean there are options but at this point people get exploited by this system

      Thus, America is built on Creator model that the government doesn't give rights, but God/nature does. Government is to protect them. Capitalism is the closest to that in that you can't legislate nature/ natural law. One can only maximize its potential, thus, individuals will do this on their own, with others, and according to Their goals, not those of others. All this leaves out the church, which is the most efficient way to feed the poor and help folks, of course by free choice of others. Etc. "Pure capitalism" doesn't address the sick, blind, maimed, etc. (church does) but then Americans are some of the biggest givers in the world.

      @Tycoon Playz no it isn't. If two warring factions slaughter each other from historical and cultural differences, how can Capitalism be 'blamed' because it didn't prevent it? If most of the world was Communist, and a genocide occurred elsewhere, unrelated to the world's economic structure, would it be Communism's 'fault'? Of course not.

    • @yorkshiremgtow1773
      @yorkshiremgtow1773 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tycoon Playz I agree. The deaths which result from a system should only be counted if they relate directly to the system, and not governmental action. However, with Communism, the deaths from hunger/starvation *are* caused by government, because a) they have the ability to seize resources from the producers, and b) a government will typically mismanage resources even if it really tries not to, because it cannot possibly have all the information needed to respond to demands which shift and change every minute.

    No matter what system there is, there will always be pros and cons as they are all based on humans with different ideas of how things should be, which is all according to how they were raised - selfish or giving, individualized or community-based. And everything can work if limits are in place to prevent the extreme from happening. So far, there are few places that have a perfect system worked out.

    Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, etc. are NOT socialist at all. They are market economies with a social safety net. Welfare systems and social ownership of the economic means of production are two entirely different things.
    EVERY Nordic country has NO minimum wage. They have lower corporate taxes, and less red tape (freer markets), allowing for more people to avoid paying high income taxes by opting to invest it into the economy themselves. This leads to more economic growth without the need for government to get involved in trying to stimulate it. It's the exact OPPOSITE of how socialism works.

    This is such a textbook display of understanding. The author is trying to be neutral here, but each of these examples are majorly flawed. I'm not going to write a massive explanation here, so I'll just pick one example from the video to serve my point--which is that these models are tremendously flawed in logic and in practice. The author states that socialism does not reward the individual with more than anyone else and therefore, there is no incentive to think outside the box. This is completely untrue and does not take into account the values of our society. If children are raised in Nazi Germany and all they heard was Heil Hitler!, they would become Nazis. If a child grows up in modern society having heard that capitalism is the best and socialism is bad or communism is bad like "China" and "Russia," they will grow up believing this. Socialism could very will provide incentive if the human value system was steered away from greed. It all depends on the value system of the tribe being studied. Instilling values in children throughout their lives and that incentive would be to BETTER society as a whole, and not the individual, would foster different political attitudes and allegiances.
    I am not a socialist, communist or any other. My bias stems from what I have learned about capitalism, which is that the wealth gap of the rich and poor is growing daily and therefore, is unsustainable. In this model, we produce as much as we CAN, not as much as we NEED. Therefore, it is an unsustainable model because as you well know, resources are running out.
    I wish more people would teach young people that the systems which govern us are OUTDATED and need to be reworked, or nothing will change and we'll rape and pillage the planet until nothing is left.

      Kwispee Kweem depending who u ask, Democratic socialism is technology under capitalism but it’s definitely very mixed with socialism and capitalism factors. I personally believe the Democratic socialism is the best economic system as it gives people the right to live a ok life, with fairly good life style, but it also rewards those who want to do better then just average. Their nothing wrong with being average, but if individuals want to make their life more independence of the government then they should. That’s true economic freedom ( the choice to depend on the government or be independent). It very sad that not that many countries followed this economic system. Maybe in the future.

    People keep talking about how socialism never evolves into communism cause the ones who promote it end up concentrating power to themselves instead of sharing it equally. True. But also capitalism which is supposed to let people have chances at class flexibility (moving up in class through working hard and smart) often times doesnt work, cause although markets are "free" they are run by titan companies that create monopolies that last for decades and squander the chances of any bright mind realizing a good idea.

    • @ChurchillJhnsn
      @ChurchillJhnsn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s corporatism. A true capitalist model advocates for the free market (emphasis on free). Monopolies are constrictive, hence they compromise the markets freedom because as you said, they stunt innovation from less prominent businesses as they haven’t the resources to compete with such a behemoth corporation which strains their ability to survive. That’s why a truly free market actually requires (limited) government regulation, which may sound contradictory although you must consider that discipline grants freedom. For example, a person lacking discipline is but a slave to his human nature. His nature to over-indulge in pleasure, and chasing the dragon. If this same person indulges in the pleasure of say, heroine, for example, yes he is technically free from authority as he was granted the freedom to take such a substance, but is he really free when he has developed an addiction to something that could have been prevented had he been disciplined?

After giving your definition of each economic system you then claim you're going to explain how each one of those models applies to the real world but then only use that to critique socialism and communism but intentionally leave out any mention of Capitalism as applied to the real world. The motivation to give your labor does not inherently come from the threat of starvation and violence. @Ashley-1917 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's not that simple. The aim of socialism is not strictly to make everyone equal, it's to eliminate the dynamic of having an oppressive and oppressed class. According to the labor theory of value, for every dollar someone makes without working, someone somewhere is working without getting paid that dollar. This means that a CEO of a company who makes millions without themselves working is doing so at the direct expense of the workers. The workers are paid a wage that does not reflect the amount of value that they produce, but rather how replaceable they are. Socialism is where the workers own the means of production. Therefore, in socialism, a factory (or something like a company) is controlled by the workers democratically, and each worker either gets an equal share of the factory's earnings or gets paid based on the value that they produce. In either case, the worker makes significantly more than under capitalism. Under socialism, you can still be whatever you want. Labor is not mandatory, but it is guaranteed. The only thing that is barred is being a business executive- that is to say that you would no longer be able to exploit people. The last thing you said is that we need less government. Depending on who you ask, communism is stateless so that satisfies your want there.

    Keep in mind that the general public has a very inconsistent understanding of these terms, particularly "socialism". Someone like Bernie Sanders would actually be what is called a "Social Democrat", which means he thinks individuals and corporations should continue to own the means of production, but the government should aggressively redistribute wealth and provide regulation. You might be saying to yourself, "but the USA already redistributes wealth and has regulation" and ding ding ding that's right - the U.S. is already a social democracy to a certain extent.
    I look at all countries as on a continuum between pure capitalism and pure communism. Every country is somewhere on the continuum between those two poles. No country has ever been purely capitalist or purely communist. Those are more like theoretical ideals rather than something that can exist in reality.

    Your explanation of capitalism lacks foresight.
    The future of economics worldwide is heading irreversibly towards the progressive automation and robotisation of the workforce. As this gathers pace and more human jobs are replaced by automation, eventually more than half of all people will be out of work thus engendering a highly technicalised and tiny elite skilled workforce AND a massive disenfranchised under class of unemployed people. The problem will not be with production, that will be ruthlessly efficient. The problem will be with consumption. Who's going to buy all your shit when no one can afford the cost?
    Eventually, if there is no wealth redistribution to redress the severe and disproportionate imbalance, then sooner or later capitalism will collapse underneath its own top-heavy weight. Just like all other systems based on heirarchy and privilege that came before, capitalism will be outmoded and replaced, just as tribal communities and confederations were replaced by feudalism and slaving empires, and just as feudalism was replaced by capitalism.
    Wealth hoarding and systematic extraction of capital from general economic circulation can not last indefinitely. Ideas such as Universal Basic Income will gain far greater traction and will become increasingly pertinent as the decades and even centuries roll by. It may not eventually lead to full stateless communism as Marx prophecised, but we are well and truly past the point of no return and are heading towards a great economic, social, and political cross roads, where capitalism will undoubtedly hit a glass roof and will become wholly untenable and unsustainable.
    The current coronavirus pandemic crisis is showing quite clearly that unbridled capitalism can not provide for the masses in times of crisis, it requires massive government investment in financial aid to citizens.

      Free market capitalism isn't failing it's just losing the free market aspect because of government interference. Capitalism is being disrupted by corrupt politicians who want to do favors for some businesses to the detriment of competing businesses in exchange for money for their political campaigns.
      We created that Dynamic when we gave too much power to the government. That power led to corrupt opportunistic politicians using the power of their elected office to enrich themselves and their business buddies.
      The government is supposed to be an independent referee making sure that everybody follows the law and honors their contracts. Government is not supposed to participate in the free market competition by picking winners and losers by helping some businesses over others.
      The solution is to reduce the power of government because if the government doesn't have the power to do favors for some businesses then the possibility for that corruption is eliminated.

      Don’t Confuse Capitalism with Corporatism
      It is an easy argument to make: the rich were made rich by a rotten capitalist system that oppresses those noble, hardworking innocents who do the actual labor. They want the system to be more fair-i.e. slanted their way- and even to cap earnings and opportunities. They witness a capitalist system that controls their lives, is in bed with government, can buy all the influence it wants, randomly destroys communities and cold-bloodedly lays off thousands of workers, simply to save money or increase stock prices.
      Capitalism, however, is not the culprit though. It is corporatism, the collective mentality of the corporation that views workers as interchangeable and customers as lacking options. We do not live in a free market: we live in a market controlled by the interrelation between monolithic corporations, Wall Street and the Government. These three entities are what control our economic and professional opportunities, not capitalism.
      Capitalism, specifically small business/entrepreneurial capitalism, is the antidote to this. SB/E Capitalism is a structure that allows anyone to achieve their goals inside the system or outside of it. It’s a system that is not rigged to the highest bidder. If the United States operated in a pure free market system, then the bailouts to Wall Street, the auto unions and the auto industry would not have happened. Those who engaged in reckless business practices would have been eaten up by the market & the void created by these organizations would have been filled with new entrants.
      It is corporatism that has created the pathway for GE, Goldman Sachs, Hollywood and GM among others to have incredible access to the White House and Congress, not to mention access to bailout money. It is corporatism that has allowed tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft to partner with the NSA, providing data on millions of their users to the shadowy gov’t agency. They are able to act with impudence because there is no real structure for new organizations to challenge them. Government works to protect its friends and prevent new entrants from becoming major players in any industry.
      The system in play now is designed to provide the illusion of opportunity, when in reality the opportunity is there only for a selected few. Corporatism is the economic partner of communism and totalitarianism, seeking to decrease opportunity and force allegiance and servitude. It is corporatism that creates the rules of industry and barriers to entry and it is corporations that purchase votes in their favor and prevent start-ups from challenging them. It is corporations that control the media, determining what we hear, see and how our opinions are formed.
      No one in power is willing to give it up. It is far easier to buy the protection needed from the government or simply buy those businesses that could challenge it-looking at you, Microsoft. A pure small business/entrepreneurial capitalist system is the antidote to this rigged structure.
      Opening up the fields to innovation and market access would create greater wealth and opportunities for millions across the country and the world. This system would also create access to greater education and freedom. A true capitalist system would put the burden of responsibility and accountability on the individual and force people to work harder, take chances and own their success or failure. With the control structure that is in place now, there is an incredible de-emphasis on personal responsibility or initiative.
      It is small business and entrepreneurial capitalism that will solve the problems of poverty and corruption around the world. For decades, we have seen government and corporate actions yield no progress yet fools think the answer is more of this, not less. This is why corporations and government oppose a true capitalist system. It challenges their power. Oligarchs are not needed; that is what they fear the most.

      Saying socialism requires no government is absurd. Who then controls the means of production that are owned collectively by the working class? Will every decision be a referendum? It is absurd because in a democratic state(the US) everything the government own is the property of the collective so the government owning everything would be synonymous to the people/working-class owning everything.
      Let's imagine we have this socialist state that you advocate for. Who will share the "enough food" to everyone who needs it? Who will organize the effort? What is the incentive for it then?

    Communism: "a theory or system of social organization in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs"
    What most people don't understand is this part: "according to their ability and needs". This means, everyone's needs are met so no one is left behind, while the more productive ones are incentivised with "bonus excess" because they have more ability.

Even before the pandemic. Capitalism only works with bandaids. Once those bandaids break loose you just keep adding more. That’s why we have an economic recession every decade. The system itself is broken. The bandaids they use to fix it (bailouts) are basically just what socialism would be but instead it only goes to wealthy businessmen. Instead of the people who are poor. That’s the problem with capitalism. It will never be a perfect system because it’s broken in its roots. It’s a bunch of broke people who owe money to a bunch of broke companies who owe money to a wealthy person.

    The truth is that "socialism" in the real world never evolved past the dictatorship of the proletariat and then, with stalin, devolved into state capitalism. Socialism (or lower phase communism as marx called it) in marxian theory is inherently stateless, as the state is defined as the tool of one class to exert its will onto the other. An extension to that might be political classes that became apparent in the soviet union, china and north korea, the party members who gain special rights by being a party member (even some capitalist countries have this class as politicians gain a certain immunity to the law) A socialist (to use the leninist distinction of lower phase communism (marx) = socialism (lenin) and higher phase communism (marx) = communism (lenin)) society would also not operate on the basis of money, which is still existent in all those nations. Furthermore, socialism cannot exist in only one country as it has to be international to fully abolish the need for profit (as the exchange for essential resources with a capitalist country will be capitalist in nature).
    This video adheres to the neoliberal propaganda of socialism being state control, which is only true for the phase between socialism and capitalism - the dictatorship of the proletariat.
    As socialism is classless, it is inherently stateless (per the marxian definition of state) and thus cannot function on state control.
    Btw marx did not "feel" it was "unfair". This phrasing does not deal justice to his extentive research and criticism on and of capitalism

      I think the main issue with this I find is that the definition of socialism has changed over time. I’d say not in a good way really, because socialism means near nothing anymore, but to say that socialism must mean a stateless society isn’t correct anymore. I wouldn’t call it propaganda, I’d say it’s closer to just how definitions change over time

    • @jumefoc
      @jumefoc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gaming Tacos and even then it is not quite true. Sure, we can move away from marxist theory but we are still seeing socialism as an inherently anti-capitalist system. Retaining Capitalist relations like wage labor or commodity production, as the soviet union did, does not make them socialist. There is detailed research on this which i am not even going to try to explain (including that socialism and communism would have to be exactly the same today, but no guarantees). So considering that people still refer to China or the Soviet Union as socialist, which is a lie invented by the US government in the cold war in order to weaponize the term as something bad, it is neoliberal propaganda, just like (and i have really seen people do this) calling any service provided by the government "socialism". Changing definitions according to material analysis and conditions, sure, but not because a lot of people are incapable of educating themselves on the topic

    • @gamingtacos381

      Nikolas Tesla ok yes I see what you mean better now. I didn’t realise that that propaganda was neo-liberal (as I don’t live in USA, and am still not entirely sure what neo-liberal means), and that that was the cause of the change in definition, rather than an effect of the changes definition

    The wealth isn't equally distributed under socialism. You get paid for the amount of work you do, just like under capitalism. The difference is that under socialism the workplace is owned and administered by the people who work there. This results in people earning higher wages and having to work less, because none of the profit is pocketed by an owner and you don't have to fire people to lower production cost, because you don't need to maximize profit.

    I understand that this is a very simplified description but the practical truth in the west is somewhat different. Today, the employer does not have the 'right' to keep all of the excess profit because the employer/employee relationship is by way of social contract in the same way as any other contract. That is to say that neither has the right to 'impose' a legal contract on the other and it only becomes legal by the agreement of both parties. An employee can revoke a contract in the same way as an employer without breaking the law. Otherwise, it is internationally deemed to be slavery. Socialism also appears when public money (the taxpayer) is used to bail-out the financial sector in a financial crash (2007/8). This is in fact inverted social-security for the capitalist system when capitalism itself would demand that the banks should fail; so you can see that in a modern society, capitalism is actually supported by socialism. Communism is very different from Socialism because the financial sector is government-run from public funds from the get-go. Anything involving support from public funds (the taxpayer), including the military, is 'socialism' unless you have a privately funded army (feudalism). Therefore, claiming that we can be either/or capitalist or socialist is an illusion; we are both but we are definitely not communist. I am not a capitalist nor a socialist but neither is anyone else. It is all political myth devised to promote the confrontational system of party politics. A better description of modern economics throughout the west would be 'social capitalism' no matter what party is in power. The alternative is communism.

      Socialism isn't just "the government does stuff", rather the focus should be on who it is that owns the means of production.
