CLIP DESCRIPTION:
James Thunder" Early ("Eddie Murphy) stops the show to put a new twist on his song.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Subsequently molded into an unstoppable hit machine by Taylor and propelled into the spotlight as "the Dreams," the girls quickly find their bid for the big time taking priority over personal friendship as Taylor edges out the ultra-talented Effie so that the more beautiful Deena can become the face of the group. Now, as the crossover act continues to dominate the airwaves, the small-town girls with big-city dreams slowly begin to realize that the true cost of fame may be higher than any of them ever anticipated.

He was doing soooo good.....until he dropped his pants💀💀💀💀. He just MIGHT have kept his job.
😂😂
Thats what I am saying. Lol. Oh why Jimmy...? 😂
Pamjam because jimmy got SOUL
😂
I think Jimmy had already lost his job when he said "I like Johnny Mathis but I can't do that stuff" then pointed at Curtis. That line made Curtis get up right then and go backstage to confront Jimmy lol
"Sooner or later, the time comes around; for a man to be a man n' take back his sound." Favorite line in the rap!
One day...that will apply to the majority of the rappers and singers in the industry.
Michael Philbert As a songwriter, I caught and felt that too !!
My favorite line was right after that when Jimmy said "I gotta do somethin' to shake things up.....I like Johnny Mathis but I can't do that stuff". He was sending a message to Curtis who was trying to change him into something that he's not
"Jimmy want a rib, Jimmy want a streak, and Jimmy want a piece of chocolate cake!" Jimmy got SOUL!!!!!!!
i watched this just to hear him say THAT line.
I luv it!! Classic Eddie.
Dezmond Harris yeah that shit was funny as hell u see how his wife looked at him @😂😀😁😃😅
best part is the white lady in the front row who goes all "OH MY!" when he says the cake line lmao
Dezmond Harris the best line in the song
Sounds like Jimmy wants some p____! 😂😂😂
There has to be a blooper reel for this segment, there is no way the cast didn't die laughing a few times, I'm over here in stitches with this part.
😂😂😂😂#icant #outoforder. It's too early for this shit lol
Jàßss
Trevor Logan, Jr. lmao I know right
I wish I would see somebody in concert live drop their drawers on stage.😂
If someone find the bloopers for this, let me know!!🤣🤣
When those horns started....amazing
😂😂
Yeah, the whole arrangement slaps. And Eddie plays the manic moment perfectly.
@@MrDigztheswagking what’s funny?
@@kaylabey I dont know it was a year ago I dont remember lol
That bass line was greatness.
Honestly!!!
TLJthethird I felt it in my chest 😍
Just noticed the white audience loved Jimmy's act.
Tea
@LadyJ 22
Those PCs that controlled the industry tried to make Jimmy into something he clearly wasn't. You're correct.
@LadyJ 22 by
I think they was laughing AT him not with him
@@thebrazydiamond4791Highly doubt it. They were smiling and clapping and you could tell it was genuine. Maybe when he dropped his pants they were laughing AT him, but they definitely enjoyed what came beforehand.
I'll forever remember "Jimmy got soul!" 👏🙏😜
Jan C dido
Right on
I think it’s interesting that they all said he embarrassed himself in this scene but the audience loved the performance.
People love to watch a train wreck
@@Smartkid2387 but where was the train wreck until his pants fell down ?
@@Overyvonne I would say once he switched songs that’s when the train started to veer off track.
@@Smartkid2387Your taste from a year ago is boring and off track.
Eddie Murphy should have won an Oscar for this role. It was really good, and he can sing.
Right? The poor guy literally got robbed of that award and the Academy knows it, too
@@PapaLobo94 Exactly.
Yes! He had one of the best performances in this movie
@PapaLobo94 The Oscar's was really upset with Eddie because "Norbit" came out that same year, they say "Norbit" was the reason he didn't win an Oscar for "Dream Girls" smh....
Jimmy want ribs..Jimmy want steak...Jimmy want some of YOUR chocolate cake!! lmfao
DreamboyNYC 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 my favorite part lmao
Lol
Thats the funniest part 😂😂
How he was dancing omg 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My favorite line
"Jimmy got soul, Jimmy got soul, Jimmy got S-O-U-L soul!" lol
TrickLuh DaKidz my fav part
I love this movie. I love this scene, Eddie Murphy was unequivocally unrivalled in this performance. The symbolism of this scene, cuts deeper than comedic value. In the 1960's black (male) artists were made to tone down their acts, and be more sanitized for commercial white consumers. To be a black man, yet gratuitously confident, in both your appeal and performance was actually deemed ILLEGAL, by Jim Crow law. As it shattered the myth of being subordinate.
The scapegoat reason was, they said it was rebel rousing and could corrupt white teenagers or those with conservative values.
The real reason, it amplified the sexual potency, mystique and allure of black men. This made white men feel insecure, and white women feel...........well, you know the rest..lol. This is why they quickly exalted the likes of Elvis, to take away 'the brothers' shine. It still goes onto this today i.e Robin Thicke is sub par and came out nearly a decade after D'Angelo washed up. Yet Robin Thicke is hailed as a neo soul innovator..lol
J2dADiaspora what stupied law, i love Eddie murphy
And the filmmakers knew it, too. Check out the white women's faces in the audience while Jimmy does his thing.
The Mujin Windrusher and let me guess that don't go on with black women as well.
Straight Up please elaborate on your question..
The Mujin Windrusher I made a statement not question. Sister's get the same hate from white women artist.
"Jimmy want a piece of your chocolate cake " 😂😂😂😂😂 that will forever be my favorite line
How the hell did he lose the Oscar?
during oscar season of that year Norbit came out, that's my theory anyway.
Well, there was the "Norbit" trailer, the "Norbit" T.V. spots, the "Norbit" premiere, and the general cinema release of "Norbit". all right smack in the middle of Oscar voting season. The man does not deserve an Oscar, if he's so naive to think that releasing an epic, _racially offensive_ turd like that right when the ballots are being filled _wouldn't_ make a difference. He simply HAD to know the game better than that! it's laughable, really it is. If he waited TWO MONTHS for that turkey's release, he'd have a little gold man on the mantle right now.
the oscars hate him for calling them out on their shit in the 80s. saying the release of norbit tainted his chances was just a sad excuse.
Sophia Petrillo the Academy changes every year with new members (even though some members stay longer), do you really think that the people who voted for his nomination in 2007 would remember a thing he said in the 80s? And A LOT of people keep saying bad things about the Awards and still get nominated almost every year (i.e. Joaquin Phoenix). And a bad movie does harm one's chance to win.
well the Academy is filled with bitter old white dudes so yeah I'm sure they're some who hold grudges - was that why he lost? who knows, but losing bc of a bad movie that has nothing to do with his amazing performance in Dreamgirls is just as ridiculous a reason. The Oscars is a joke.
Jimmy is the only person in this movie I feel sorry for. Jimmy was doing just fine before Curtis. Curtis, The Dreams, and CC built their careers off Jimmy then Curtis threw him away.
Wow I actually like this song...lol. I find myself dancing to this song all the time.
Really disappointed there wasn't a completed version on the soundtrack
ITS SOOOO GOOOODDD - I want Eddie Murphy to do more soonggggs like this
A man's final attempt to show he can be himself instead of some product....😢❤
well people, this is probably the closest we´ll get to Eddie Murphy acting like his old self. I´m gonna miss it
Volvagia´s Blaze I was thinking the same thing.
Just saw Mr Church and you're probably right. Unfortunately... :(
Video Invader noo he has a new comedy coming out on netflix
@@mariahyohannes Dont forget coming 2 america sequel
Does dolomite count?
I can't do rock. I can't do roll. But I can do baby, is show you my soul.
This scene is loosely based on the working relationship between Marvin Gaye and Berry Gordy. In the film Curtis refused to release Jimmy's peace song because there were other songs like it during the Vietnam era and Jimmy was upset which was why he sang "Jimmy want more!" on stage, a reference to how Curtis was ignoring him. In real life Marvin's What's Going On was nearly not released because Berry wanted to concentrate on younger acts like the Jackson Five; he left Motown not long after that.
Thanks for saying what very few others have said in the comments. My knowledge of it comes from Motown the Musical - very insightful.
His wife's in the audience thinking "what the hell kinda nut did I marry?" Lol
Yes Dawn Lewis!
Jimmy should've gotten an Oscar.
I think he would have BUT dropping Norbit right around Oscar voting season might have been the nail in the coffin. Shouldn't have mattered BUT.....I think it did
James Brown style!!!!
Mongo299 James Brown/Marvin Gaye (who was known to strip onstage).
Ed would've got the Oscar if Norbit didn't come out 2 months after this lol.😂😭😭
😂😂
Funny enough, Dreamgirls & Norbit are my 2 favorite movies ever 😂
@@ennoviaed140 yea it tainted his image to get an Oscar because he played in the movie norbit. I guess it looked unprofessional in there eyes smh
They said that Dreamgirls underperformed than Little Miss Sunshine.
This is a bop no matter what anyone says 😂
DEFINITELY
this movie taught me as a really young girl just how much black musicians influence music, art and culture in general.
If Eddie Murphy wasn't in Norbit right when this movie was doing its Oscar campaign, he totally would have gotten an Oscar for this moment right here. It's so fun, but there's a sadness to it. Definitely his finest acting moment.
Jimmy got fired too.
He was jammin'. Eddie playing Jimmy is iconic. Jamie Foxx's face is priceless.
Should've won that Oscar, absolutely robbed.
I HAVE ALWAYS AND WILL ALWAYS LOVE THIS MAN, EDDIE MURPHY!
SO TALENTED!
I'M HIS NUMBER ONE FAN!
+aqueenwaits I KNOW RIGHT...I LOVE HIM!!
Sherrie Johnson
He is simply..........SEXY and BRILLIANT!
So we not gonna mention the horn players getting down at 0:54 😂😂
😂😂😂😂
They are cold jamming. Even Beyonce jamming on the low.😂😂😂
1:09 you see Beyoncé and Jamie Foxx smile and smirk 😂😂
Eddie Murphy best acting performance in that film
After that performance Curtis said to Jimmy he was past it and he had to be fired for a new sound. Yet jimmy got the best audience reaction of the night while the other acts did old love songs
SEXUAL CHOCOLATE! LOL He went from Jimmy Early to Randy Watson in a matter of seconds!
He should won an Oscar.
I agree but I also liked Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine
This scene just randomly pops in my head from time to time
Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson were AMAZING in this.
0:54 i love how they were dancing with him 😂❤
61 people didn't want to give Jimmy a piece of their chocolate cake :/
1:00-1:02 that hand gesture reminds me of either "Resputia" or the mother from the "Nutty Professor"
Spot on. Turns out, it's an Eddie Murphy hand move lol. Did it in his stand-up too.
This song was my" let it go". When it comes to music you gotta do what is in your heart and soul. He ended up looking like a fool, but this is what happens when you hold something in to long.
If he wouldn't have died in the movie, they could've done a movie of him having a comeback, would be very entertaining
Best part of the whole movie...
Jimmy re-ivented his sound and birthed early rap.
Probaly one of my favorite african american actor hes got so much soul and i bet he enjoyed making this scene look how happy he was
"Can't do rock can't do roll what I can do baby is show my soul cause Jimmy got soul!! Jimmy got soul!!! Jimmy got Jimmy got Jimmy got SOULLLLLLLLLLLLL"
#classic
Everytime I see this clip, I see a man who has had enough and is going for it and the hell with consequences. The fact that he is high was added incentive. Eddie Murphy did a fantastic job in this clip, well done Eddie. Eddie got soul 🙂🙂🙂
Jimmy want mo Jimmy want mo Jimmy want Jimmy want Jimmy want moooo 😂😂😂I loveee eddie
😂😂😂😂 The band was wit him tho
The horns on the intro 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bass man come on up. 1.2.3 hit me!! Lol
Eddie Murphy is an entertainment Swiss Army knife. Dude can do it all
This scene is so sad and funny. Especially because I know what comes next.
But the way the band strut off the stage backin up all jimmy bullshit is what gets me 😂😂😂😂😂😂💀💀💀
"Jimmy want ribs, Jimmy want steak, Jimmy want piece of ur chocolate cake" lmao
Eddie Murphy should have won that well deserved Oscar! People should not have judged that based on "Norbit"!
This movie was Eddie Murphy at his best Fr. This scene always makes me laugh
"Jimmy got style, Jimmy got class, Jimmy got a size 12 foot in yo azz!!!!"
That band was getting down dancing
Jimmy want a rib, Jimmy want a steak, Jimmy want a piece of your CHOCOLATE CAKE!
Jimmy got his ass fired too!😂😂
My whole family was laughing but I wasn't. This is actually really sad because he was addicted to drugs...And a couple minutes later he died from drug overdose in the movie.
Jimmy got fired..Jimmy got fired..Jimmy got...Jimmy got ...Jimmy GOT FIRED!!
I love me some eddie Murphy now, one of the best
this scene was LIT! Eddie Murphy is truly one of the greatest talents we've ever had and I miss him being the number one go to actor if you wanted a hit classic movie. I always thought Dreamgirls didn't have enough of him in it when I first saw it lol but he should've got the Oscar for real
The greatest scene ever to be done by Eddie Murphy
Jimmy got Jimmy got Jimmy got his ass fired out there showing his soul. I tried something like this at a McDonald's on the grill and got the same result
the man playing the bass killed that
Favorite part @1:12 they way he says "Jimmy wants a piece of your chocolate cake!" haha and the way the audience cracks up especially the white lady near the front. That line had me rolling with laughter Eddie is the man!
my man was just stressed 😂😂
It happens 😂
It showed lol
Lmao 😂 he killed this part 😂😂💯💯
1:17 😂the white ladys like, I want a piece of chocolate cake too😂😂😂
Eddie Murphy🤣😅 2023 I Still Can’t 😂😂😂
I’m here in 2020 that bass player killed it
1...2..3....HIT ME! Lol love that part
I just realized that Jimmy's wife is Jaleesa from a different world!
This is Eddie's for all time. His best work ever if you ask me.
Only Eddie could have played this part and that's why he won an award,. Jimmy got SOUL xxxx
Went from Johnny Mathis Jr. To James Brown in a minute.
Love it.
I'm surprised there are so little of behind the scenes footage of Dreamgirls especially Jimmy Early parts I bet they had a blast shooting this scene.
Eddie is the man!! WTF happened when he made an album--he is a really great singer. We should have had a funk R&B album not My Girl Wants To Party All The Time.
Yes, he can really sing. Eddie was also a singer in the early stages of his career. His biggest hit was Party All the Time, and he recorded a song with Michael Jackson. And let's not forget his performance with Sexual Chocolate in Coming to America. He says those days embarrass him, and he now wants to stick to acting.
One of my favorite scenes maybe cause it's Eddie Murphy at his best!
1:18 That woman is getting so down with it lol
Jimmy got soul!
Eddie Murphy played this part so well! This is my favorite part! When he drops his pants, I nearly fell off my bed laughing.
Jimmy want more😂😂😂😂😂
It was after this moment where Jimmy learned a new song, "You about to lose yo job! GET THIS DANCE!"
Classic freestyle
Am i the only one that want only the first part, like the sad song
Eddie Murphy is really good performances!
The last live action movie I saw with Eddie was Imagine That. He hasn't done anything interesting since
@@manuelorozco7760put some respect on his name he’s a legend. The man is pushing 60. He’s been making hits for decades stop hating
@@iamzay4938 Well I saw Coming 2 America a while back. I wasn’t a fan of it as much as the first movie
Damn Eddie's so talented. Jimmy got soul best scene ever
The lady screaming @0:16 always take me out cause the would be me 🤣🤣😂😂😂
0:15
My fault like i was saying. When them trumpets start blowing and when he hit that spin move i feel out. Lmfao and you can see jamiie fox was mad ass hell.
Jimmy want a rib Jimmy want a stake Jimmy want a pice of your chocolate cake.
seems like Jimmy got soul, but Jimmy got no pants
0:30 when the saxophones start playing he’s starts cheesing hard you can tell he’s about act a fool😂
Eddie should’ve one the Oscar for this.
Everyone still overlooked the fact that jimmy was the first rapper 😂 and ppl liked it , just to get fired lol 😂
