I've had this overheating problem on my em2 for 17 years. 248k miles now. Chased the overheating issue and fixed every damn thing that could have been the problem. Some times I would fix it only find out that another part of the system was contributing to the problem too. I have replaced the whole engine and the car still overheat with the new engine - yeah you read it right, new engine overheated also.
During the time the overheating was happening on the newly replaced engine I come to realize that nothing about the engine was at fault. Every single part on the new engine was replaced with new a new genuine Honda part, coolant level was topped off, air flushed out of system - every prevention was covered, absolutely nothing was left unchecked.
The car overheated and there was nothing to stop it from doing so.
I can't help but to think that the only left to blame is the ECU. Crazy as that may sound, I did have my car for seventeen years and remembered that it overheated once when it had less than 500 miles.
The EM2 or perhaps D17 engine is the crappiest motor ever made.

The fan is the cause it use a pull system

Update... Swapped out the D17 for a D15 nine months ago. Sacrifices 7 hp but eh, no overheating issues anymore.

@OChrome Going on more than 18 years now, getting every penny out of it. Car is a gas saver, I've benefited so much for having it - it allowed me to do so much more with my money. I have been able to own other nicer vehicles because of owning the Civic. It's my Daily, I own four other pleasure cars :)

1 have. A. 05. Honda Civic. Showing signs of overheating took it to the lazy mechanics of Pep Boys I didn’t find nothing. So. I’m going to pull the thermostat out. Change the control sensor for the heater fan. Try some blue devil head gasket repair. See what happens. The biggest issue is that it does not overheat every time I drive the car so if you take it to the mechanic shop and it’s not overheating they say you have no problem no the problem is that you’re lazy and you don’t want to do your job so I guess I’m gonna have to take matters into my own hands wish me luck

If it doesn't overheat everytime that sounds like a temperature sensor a fan turning slow or a faulty thermostat Imo

They make a impact socket for taking off harmonic balance and if you do another honda I strongly suggest you invest 25-30 bucks in one. Hammers that harmonic balance nut right off real easy.

Yes sir I tried that with 150 psi snap-on impact gun and a Craftsman I could not get it to budge

I drove mine on the freeway from work home....15 min drive no big deal. Stoped by at a drive through and while I was sitting there that sucker jumped high all the way to the H. When I drove off it leveled back to regular temp. It was weird never had seen it do that. Not even when my radiator cracked. I’m hoping it’s a stuck thermostat and not my head gasket.
