    After 73 years, they have discontinued PS magazine. This publication was probably the single most effective program in the history of HQDA. There is no telling how many millions of dollars it has saved through maintenance, transportation costs from turn-ins, etc. Really feels like a bunch of people at HQDA/ DOD forgot how the mainline Army works with many of the decisions that have been made lately. They are going to find out real quick when expenses start shooting through the roof for dumbshit.

      Yep. Tech progress is really difficult to share across borders, not even EU countries can really manage it, so America being 50 countries that do a really passable impression of a single unified country, at least for defence spending, is a massive force multiplier. Also, if you're doing shit nobody else has seen, you're probably buying parts from someone who has a monopoly and you want to keep from thinking about selling to anyone you wouldn't go on a Thai night out with the boys with

      First thing I thought about the US's "Space Force" was: "Okay, will we need a 4x or a 5x multiplier on the current cost of our Air Force to accomplish this? Or do we just need to glue our current NASA spending onto the Air Force and say 'go'?"

    I loved, loved, loved this.
    Best of both forms and an excellent way of explaining spending. Sarcastic Kid is my favourite. He sometimes is this emotionally vulnerable toddler, but this shows his lean mean killing machine purpose. Grampa Buff is the heart of it all.
    People don't understand that one of the most important US exports is security. When they fanny around(looking at you Baboon House) it calls that into question, they don't increase home security. They diminish it.
    If you are soft abroad, enemies will question your strength at home.

    As a former radio operator for an artillery battery this is true. We would do field exercises as a battery or battalion at at least once a month, then spend about a month in 29 Palms doing a regimental training twice a year and then a couple weeks on moving around base doing the same regimental exercises. On top of that rotating out units for Marine Expendtionary Units or Unit deployment program to Okinawa.

    Why is the defence budget so big?
    1. When it’s not you end up like Russia struggling against a small country.
    2. You end up like Western Europe and Canada and Australia for most of the last 50 years. Almost entirely dependent on the strength of another country for protection, which leads inherently to a dominion status.
    3. It’s the only way to overcome any corruption. Which would end up making you like china. Where recent reports say their missile silos are in such poor condition that the doors don’t open, their fuel supplies are so low that they fill the tanks with water to create the illusion of being at capacity.

That single IT department for brigade spends a quarter of a million every year in office furniture.

    I love how the raptor is portrayed as unstable. I go to church with a retired test pilot who flew 3 out of our 4 stealth aircraft, the raptor (both YF22 and F22) being one of them. When talking about "stability" he said "there are virtues to instability: when an aircraft is naturally stable in all three axes, it's harder to maneuver, because it wants to stay stable. When an aircraft is unstable it's very easy to make it highly maneuverable, it's more like you're unleashing it". If that doesn't fit with HLC's raptor idk what does lol.

    Curious - with Raptor (and the rest of the boys) and their "operational cost" - does that include the time of the maintainers (in addition to parts and consumables)? And are they doing just the hours or the hours, food, lodging, etc... would be a little "off" since those costs are already part of the budget . Love the training hours in the Cold War and just past - then the fun times flying over various "Stans" putting it to work.

      Part of it, but a lot more is self-inflicted. The Canadian government spends approximately the same amount of money _per capita_ (per person) as the US government on health care. And Canadians get it mostly for free! That's how messed up the US healthcare buerocracy is.

    • @Quicksilver1936
      @Quicksilver1936 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't want "free" socialized healthcare. Coming from a Canadian whose spent more than his fair share around hospitals, the system is so broken it's effectively triage care with a decent chance of dying before you can get a procedure.

    • @janehrahan5116
      @janehrahan5116 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is mostly wrong. Canada has a 20% average copay in hospital, and 80% for medication. Furthermore their system is so overtaxed that maid exists.
      Both need work.

      @@TheEDFLegacy This is so laughably wrong it's hilarious. It's not free, our taxes are mental, with the highest combined rates hitting more than 50%. I think one of the other reasons is that you have conflicting goals (which honestly is probably a good thing).
    On the one hand many citizens don't like the government to have a huge budget, and of course with defense there are a lot of large prices tags attached to everything, so it kind of naturally falls under a lot of scrutiny.
    On the other hand, a lot of that money goes to paying hundreds of thousands, if not millions of employees of not only defense contractors, but also all their sub-contractors, sub-sub-contractors, etc. This provides not only direct payment to these companies, but also helps to stimulate activity in the private sector, since many of the people who produce tools for use in the defense chain of production can sell those same products in the commercial market, create modified versions, or at the very least develop expertise and knowledge that can then be used to create other products they can sell to the public or other businesses.
    Again, I don't necessarily think having those two conflicting forces at play is a bad thing.
    Additionally, I think one aspect that will help things going forward is that during the Cold War, the U.S. threw a lot of money to develop technologies such as stealth and early military grade microchips that were very much in their infancy. Now however, we are seeing that we have significantly improved on our production of these processes. Planes such as the F-35 & B-21 which have significantly cheaper maintenance schedules than the F-117, B-2, & F-22. For chips, we have of course had decades now of massive improves in the lithography space, which has not only brought massive performance & power improvements, but also done so at a cheaper scale. Yes of course, the DOD will always end up paying a higher price, but comparing the development of lithography in the NATO & NATO friendly countries against the communists during the cold war, shows that
    A) The DOD will get a better product than if the commercial market didn't exist
    B) It will still be cheaper than what they would have otherwise gotten.

    • @OneBiasedOpinion

      Honestly, military spending has never been a problem for me. I’d far rather have the DoD sprinkling our cash back into the system, even if it is via the MIC, than to watch it go into the pockets of the clownshow that largely runs DC atm. Hell, I pay high taxes on gas in my state, but we get some of the nicest roads you’ll ever drive on and that makes the extra cost worthwhile. Especially when I have to drive across state lines and see what others have to contend with.

    Considering the cost of human lives, I wonder why more militaries don't invest in systems that increase the life expectancy of a soldier in combat? The US has the right idea, because a human takes at _least_ 18 years to prepare, and their deaths (or, heaven forbid - economically speaking - a permanent injury that takes them out of the economy and adds costs to it), you're losing out on years or even _decades_ of economic return.
    Of course I'm just speaking of the economic impact; the social impact is just as severe. But on the economic side, in the long run, a human will likely cost more to lose than almost _any_ military system. And if the dead soldier never had any kids? That's a permanent, _generational_ financial loss.

    Let's not forgot absolutely ignorant cost and time management. A guy i know that works for boeing said that when he orders a sheet of plywood by the time it goes through 3 different communication chains, gets approved, someone finally goes and gets the plywood, and it finally ends up in his building its now a $5000 sheet of plywood because he can't just go get it himself. We did some work with an airforce base that has a manufacturing facility. All jobs and tasks are given time quotes for how long that thing should take. A mundane task that takes our guys 30 mins or less to do was quoted 8 hrs at that place. And those guys somehow manage to make it take that long.
