    Hey Jake - I feel I learned a great deal here, I appreciate you taking the time to make a well spoken video about it! Carbon is going through a bit of a "gold rush" of late, on top of being really accessible and inexpensive. I would suggest more videos along this line, and like many of your commenters, I'm interested in making my own brushes. LOL I wish I had seen this sooner! I'm staring at a vacuum motor that I desperately need to return to service and clearly is unhappy chewing on a D cell electrode :) It's unfortunate, as battery electrodes often seem a perfect fit for the round spring tunnel of many brush holders - craic on!

      Thank you so much sir. Unfortunately repairing power tools takes time and with my current job i cant do both. Anyway maybe you can cut to size the carbon to fit your vacuum motor

    hello sir.
    this video clears some our theories but as we are the manufacturers of voltage stabilisers and we use dimmers in which we use carbons but we didnt know yet how to test the carbons or which to use the right carbons for our products. could you tell us how to choose right carbon.

    Hi Jake I changed the carbon brushes for new when I noticed arching and slow running of the motor.. After changing and a lot of fettling it now runs But slow and still aching the brushes are made for the motor in question ? Any tips hints thanks

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas
      @JakeMarvinVillegas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good day sir Andrew, the primary reason for arching and slow spin is that either the armature or the field coils are burnt or both. I suggest to check the armature in a growler to see if its shorted. If not, then the field coil is the problem.

    Anyone know about specs for carbon brushes for vacuum cleaner motor VS for power tools? One would be much higher RPM, so is there a different makeup? I tried using brushes out of an old power tool for a vacuum cleaner motor, but they smell terrible when they get hot. What specs to look for in brushes for a high speed motor? Great video! Thanks

    Do you have a place to recommend where I can buy carbon brushes? I have a Greenworks Electric chainsaw, model 20332. I have looked on line everywhere, but can't find one.
    The old brushes or what’s left of them measures ~ 9.1mm X 11.8mm X 15.8mm long. There is a 4” copper braided lead attached to the back. There is no spring on the brush, as a "spring clamp" attached to the motor keeps the brush pressed against the commutator. Thanks.

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas
      @JakeMarvinVillegas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Sir, the carbon brush is used only to connect the armature and electricity. Unfortunately having more carbon brush will not increase the voltage. Unless you will use a higher voltage in using the power tool

      I had to jury rig something for temporary use to get a Toro 1800 snow blower working to finish the last half of the job, so I used some solder braid and pushed it into the hole on the side, and then soldered it to the original copper braid. It was able to work well enough as a stopgap to finish the job, but I have some generic brushes on the way to replace them.

    nice video ..my brushes are in a hand router..they have removable
    caps and you jsut insert the brush..my question is i cant find exact
    size brushes so i was going to buy slightly bigger brushes and sand them
    down on some sandpaper...i need 7mm x 5.5mm and can only find
    6.5mmx7.5mm brushes without special ordering them....do you think it
    will be ok sanding down about 1mm off each brush evenly on both sides
    to fit? the length is fine...i think it should be ok but maybe i
    wrong?..there are 2 brushes and each have a spring and copper shunt on
    them..very common..nothing spcecial other than the odd size.

    Hi there are several people asking how the copper wires are held in place in the carbon brush. I have some small motors where the carbon brush is held with a spring and the wire is in its turn held with the same spring in the upper part of the holder. Conclusion you only needs to hold the copper wire with the spring and make sure it is conductive.That would work I will try to see

    • @JakeMarvinVillegas
      @JakeMarvinVillegas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir it only needs to conduct electricity. Either way the holder of the carbon brush is already conductive. The copper wire is not really necessary.

    • @alessandroandrenacci2372
      @alessandroandrenacci2372 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, but only for those little motors, whose current is not so high.
      For bigger motors and higher currents, the springs could become hot, and easily lost their mechanical properties. And this is why they install into carbon brushes even big copper conductors ...
