You sound like the guy who narrated the old Disney documentaries from the 1950's. I loved his voice. He always had that cheery tone, even when describing something really ghastly in the animal kingdom. This is a nice video.

This is a well done & narrated video Sam. Great job! I have a red bellied woodpecker, thanks for teaching me the name, living in one of my trees. He has learned to fly down & take peanuts that I feed to the squirrels, and now a family of blue jays. Strange thing is, being that blue jays are so aggressive, one of the blue jays is always with the woodpecker. They fly down together, & take peanuts. If you see the blue jay, the woodpecker is right behind him. Like best friends. That is strange. The woodpecker seems to be watching the blue jay all the time, I think that's how he learned that I was feeding the peanuts. The oak tree is too high up,& I believe there is only 1 woodpecker. I only know, we heard the pecking awhile back & realized we had a woodpecker. Then he made a showing when he learned about the peanuts. There are also barn owls, so this small yard is like a little wildlife preserve. Incredible how many animals are visiting us! Armadillos, raccoons, you name it!

Than you for this very well done video! I became curious about this bird about a year ago when I saw a male red bellied woodpecker on my suet feeder instead of the usual downy woodpeckers I see.I have not seen him since, but realized that I hav heard the call before.

Lucky you! I've spotted quite a few different hammerheads on our street this past year, Red-Headed, Downy, Northern Flicker and today, after hearing what sounded like a jackhammer out my bedroom window, I looked out the window to see a gorgeous Red-Bellied. Spectacular!
We have about 6 feeders in our yard and 4 suet feeders, so we get a great variety of birds.
Thank you so much for documenting and sharing this incredible journey of an incredible bird! Well done.

This was so well documented. Thanks for providing. Regarding the wood chips, the red bellied bird houses (made for the downy, red bellied, and red headed woodpeckers, one of the few that will live in a man-made house) you can buy come with a bag of wood chips. Perhaps when they were flinging the chips out of this house they were cleaning out a bit.

Fantastic video and very helpful to us, as we have been watching a red-bellied pair in their nest cavity for about 5 weeks now. We can hear the little ones peeping but have not seen them stick their faces out, should be any day now. The parents are feeding them incessantly. Interesting that your pair chose a place below some fungus (I think) to create their cavity - ours did the same. I posted my husband's picture of the fungus "roof" on Woodpeckers of the World facebook page, and the expert there said that they choose places with fungus because the wood is softer and easier to excavate.

THANKS! I've been wondering why they're called red-bellied. That's a rare sight you showed us! You forgot to mention how to tell male & female apart-the male's red patch on his head extends all the way forward, and the female's patch is smaller, only at the nape. But a GREAT video!

You mentioned you believe the red bellied woodpecker scatters the excavated chips out of their cavity to prevent predators from finding the nest. I’d think the opposite, in that it would scatter evidence there was a nest cavity above! Wouldn’t you think it would be
necessary to clear out the excavated wood to make room for the whole brood. Thanks so much for sharing this awesome documentary! I have a pair nesting in a rotted Live Oak in my backyard, but I’m so glad You actually had your bathroom window for a True….Birdseye view!😅 Happy birding!

Awe, sir you did a fine job. I really enjoyed your choice for providing commentary. I think, you should do more bird video's. I am going to research the whole feather pecking, aggressive nature toward the parents. I couldn't help but chuckle when you called it, "possible normal teenage behavior". Also, I want to find out about where the little guy lives, if not with it's parents. Does it live on a branch until it makes a home site, or does it return to the parental nest at night. Good video. :)
