You analysis is spot on imo. Blocking and power assisted strikes seem to be most likely use of half swording. Half swording in a grappling context, as seen in some HEMA, seems, in all likelihood, a good way to injure yourself with your own weapon. Combat is dynamic and the chances of presenting the blade edge or point towards yourself is very high. Btw, I sent you an email with username in the title. Is there any kenjutsu school that trains to use the sword like this? If there's, do they have videos? I'd love to see it in a kata or something similar.

But, I'm sorry my aristocratic friend, sword fighting is just cooler than poetry. Don't know what to tell you except maybe don't look down on warriors as uncouth and just admit that sword fighting is cool.
