The Slave Island. Gorée Senegal

  • Gorée is a tiny, car-free island off the coast of Dakar, in Senegal. It's known for its role in the 15th- to 19th-century Atlantic slave trade. On the narrow streets, colonial buildings include the House of Slaves, now a museum. The 19th-century Fort d'Estrées houses the IFAN Historical Museum, with exhibits on Senegal's past. The Henriette Bathily Women's Museum considers the role of women in West African society.
Gorée Island was first visited (1444) by Portuguese sailors under Dinís Dias and occupied in subsequent years. The island's indigenous Lebu people were later displaced, and fortifications were erected. The town was active in the Atlantic slave trade from 1536 until 1848, when slavery was abolished in Senegal. Historians debate whether Gorée was a major entrepôt for the trade or simply one of many centres from which Africans were taken to the Americas.
Gorée changed hands several times, but from 1817 until Senegal's independence in 1960 it was under the control of France. As early as 1848 Gorée participated in French elections, and it was represented in the French Parliament during the first half of the 20th century. The island's importance steadily declined with the rise of Saint-Louis and Dakar on the mainland.
Several museums and the remains of colonial-era forts attract tourists. The Maison des Esclaves ("Slave House"), which was constructed in 1786, includes displays of slavery artifacts, and the Fort d'Estrées (built in the 1850s) is the site of a historical museum. There are also museums of women's history and of the sea. In 1978 Gorée Island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and several of its historic structures were restored in the 1980s and '90s.

after I visited Goree and heard that the chiefs sold their own people out, unfortunately i didnt feel sad i just saw it as business. capitalism at its best. it was just humans had a price tag on their head. . plus it wasn't like the the Europeans didn't have inside help for 300 plus years. there were generations of tribal sellouts that aided this entire operation. And the church? why would any sensible descendant of slaves believe in the Christian God after all the captures beat your ancestors , tortured, raped and killed them and then they go pray in the church ,slaves were forced to help build, up the hill for a safe voyage to the new world. Make it make sense? I was just visited the island yesterday afternoon. i left with more questions than answers. The Island is beautiful though.

I visited Goree Island in 1979. It is heart-breaking to stand in the tiny rooms where my people were kept, crammed together like cattle and treated far worse than any animal ever would be treated. It should be required for ever American who does not understand the true plight of Black People to go there and stand in the footprints of slaves.

I think that many of the people who work there catch a ferry to the island everyday. I don't remember seeing many places to live there. Mostly shack shops and vendor booths everywhere

@Mercedes Sanchez Rodriguez de Guzmán yes it is. I was the greatest experience that I've ever had. I stayed in Dakar for 7 days and then attended a 3 day long wedding in a village. I was even given a name by an elder in a fishing village. I got to swim in the Atlantic (last time ever swimming at a beach because I nearly drowned) and stayed at this huge open style mansion on the Atlantic for a night. I visited the mosque of Touba and drank from it's fountain of youth. I was only 11 at the time but it was the most memorable experience of my childhood

Chinese and Japanese people look similar but have different languages, cultures and DNA. Black people and African people only share skin complexion. Just as there are different types of European people.

Most black American people are finding out through genealogy that we aren't African. We trace back to native Americans that were shipped to west Africa or the earliest native American tribes here.... Culturally we have plenty of African roots of course, but history has misplaced so much of our information, and it turns out it's on purpose.... I'll drop a link from someone who does educationally based historically documented research on topics just like this.

Pretty much. I went to Senegal in 93. I was 11 and had 5,000 USD. I went to the travel angency for currency exchange and they were just counting out money and stapling it together. I left there with 2 brown bags of money. Being 11 at the time and unaware of how much money I had, I nearly started a riot outside of our hotel by giving a few homeless people money. I had all these stacks of stapled money and it was taking to long to undo the staples so I ended up giving out a few whole stapled stacks and the next morning you would've thought that a rock star was staying at the hotel. It was no less than 50 of them lined up sleeping shoulder to shoulder right outside of the main entrance. Our tour guide then changed the itinerary for the day and i ended up in some village where i was convinced that I would be saving an entire village by buying into their chicken farm (looked like an old deserted warehouse) lol. I ended up giving them about a quater bag of money and signed some contract (i think it was in French) and never saw that place or money again lol

@@randomhiphop5055 nothing out of the ordinary. Grew up "upper-lower" class aka "hood rich". My aunt was cool with the principal. I was in Black Male Achievement (program for at risk kids) The program director was going to Africa with a study group. I wanted to go. The principal made it a field trip. The school board stopped it at the last minute because it was on the news. My family took up collections at work and church to pay for the trip. I ended up with enough money to buy toys for the kids i might encounter, new clothes for the trip and 5000 dollars to take with me. No it's not a normal experience but I have pictures of it all. The bags of money in the pictures too.
