      In my case, they say something in Kapampangan when they're sharing a secret(my mom isn't Kapampangan but she can understand and my dad is Kapampangan so papa just says some secret in kapampangan then mama says yes, no or whatever applicable answer), but not negative stuff about me(they say that in Filipino, lmao)

    TO EVERYONE: I am teaching Conversational Bisaya. I teach common phrases and sentences that are actually being used in the day to day conversation. If you are looking for traditional Bisaya this channel is not for you. In the day to day conversation of Cebuano, we borrow a lot of words from the Spanish and some English terms are used as well. I'm sorry in Bisaya is "Pasayloa ko". It could also be "pasensya na" which means "be patient with me". In Cebu, it is very common for us to combine English and Cebuano words. It is also very easy for us to switch between these 2 languages. You don't necessarily use "Pasayloa ko" in every situation. When bumping unto somebody (friends or stranger) you can just say "sorry or sorry kaayo". The "pasayloa ko" or "pasensya na" is commonly used when commiting a serious mistake though using the English term doesn't make your apology less. The trick is to be sincere when asking for an apology. Please do watch my video about asking for forgiveness or apology here: th-cam.com/video/Vr6uK8AQ98A/w-d-xo.html

    • @omegamelody6947
      @omegamelody6947 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even here in Northern Mindanao we say simply say 'sorry'. Pasayloa as well as pasensya is deeper. I use it if I do a serious mistake ahahhaha

    Hi Judy, just want to say thank you so much for this video. When I arrived in Cebu city this February I was bored and lonely during ecq. I used to walk around and listen to this every day in my condo and practice either with the guards here or taxi drivers and cebuanos in the street until I became fluent in just four months! Because of this, I now have many friends and everyone knows me here as the foreigner that speaks bisaya! Just walking around and speaking bisaya and seeing the shock on people’s face is priceless. Again thank you so much, you have no idea how this video was a start to something beautiful in my life here in Cebu city! Daghan salamat!!!!

Been here for almost 3 weeks now and gladly appreciate all your efforts to let us understand easily and speak Cebuano. My job will take more than 5 yrs and this is very helpful & best way for me to learn to communicate in Cebuano. Thank you for helping a lot of people, more power and God bless you. 😍

    there are slangs/shortcuts in bisaya, like:
    ex.
    wala ko kasabot = wa’ ko kasabot
    hala na hulog = hala na houg’
    sulod nata = sud’ nata
    asa ang terminal? = asa’ng terminal?
    unsa imong pangalan?(formal) = unsay imong pangalan(casual)
    kinsa na siya? = kinsa na?
    you can use these phrases toward people you are friendly with.

    Hi Judy!!! Salamat kaayo sa paghimo sa kini nga video. I’m from Maui, Hawaii and my mom moved here from Cagayan De Oro City when she was 19 years old. I was born and raised here in the US and although my mom would talk to me and my siblings in bisaya often, English is my first language. Aside from my family there weren’t many bisdaks to practice with growing up so I lost touch with the language. Now that I have my own kids it is my biggest goal to relearn it and to teach them. So again, salamat kaayo ha! I really enjoyed this.

    Thanks for the videos, Judy. My (now) wife and I met 5-years ago in Palawan, where we then lived for two years. Back in the states now, but plan on moving back to the Philippines in another year or two. My wife is from Leyte, and that's where we're going. My time in Palawan prepared me with zero Cebuano language skills...haha, as they speak Tagalog there. Thankfully, I have a little time to prepare, and your videos will be a big help.. Thanks again!!

  • @philam1973
    @philam1973 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I already learned most of these. Some I don’t know but are helpful. I was very confused at the beginning when I learned one phrase and heard something else that turned out to mean the same thing. Learn that and there is another (each totally different). Example: Nikaon na ka? Naniudto na ka? Nakakaon na ka? Humana na ba ka og kaon? All in some way asking Did you eat? Throw in the accents Cebuanos shorten words with “l” in the middle and it gets more interesting. Learning Bisaya isn’t a job. It’s an adventure!

    I am from Illinois, but my mother is Cuban and my father is Puerto Rican. A lot of these words are spelled almost the same and pronounced the same. Which is pretty cool.
    My boyfriend is half black and half Filipino. His mom was teaching him Cebuano, but she passed away 16 years ago. He is now 30 years old. To find out that he has not visited his mom in 15 years, because he feels that he failed her, he feels that he disappointed her by not learning the Cebuano language. I told him, we can both learn together and have a small conversation enough to keep up with it. Then go see his mom and speak to her. He agreed. We have been learning through you with basic questions and basic responses. Also, we have been learning through an App called (Cebuano to English translator). The pronunciation is not as perfect as yours but it is doable..Our goal is to go at the end of this month. Will come back for an update. Thanks so much.

    4:40 No one really says this phrase nowadays, except the older generations obviously. It's extremely formal and most younger Cebuano speakers don't even know this phrase actually exist.
    An alternative for "You're welcome" would be the colloquially used "Ok ra na" or "Ok ra ui". Of course, there are better and more ways to express it but this is just for starters and learning other phrases and words with different nuances require experience in speaking with natives since Cebuano isn't a logically structured language(as far I know, haven't seen a book tackling Cebuano, yet).

      edit: Og nganong nag-iningles man tawn ko na parehas man tang makasabot og bisaya. ahaha
