“Unspeakable”: Doctors Back from Gaza Say Death Toll “Much Higher,” Push Harris, Biden for Ceasefire

We speak to two doctors who are part of a group of 45 U.S. doctors, surgeons and nurses who have volunteered in Gaza since October 7 and wrote an open letter to President Biden and Vice President Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, demanding an immediate ceasefire and an international arms embargo of Israel. The group includes evidence of a much higher death toll than is usually cited: more than 92,000 people, which represents over 4% of Gaza’s population. The doctors write, “With only marginal exceptions, everyone in Gaza is sick, injured, or both. Israel’s continued, repeated displacement of the malnourished and sick population of Gaza, half of whom are children, to areas with no running water or even toilets available is absolutely shocking.” The conditions in Gaza are “unacceptable,” and “people know this is wrong but no one is speaking up,” says Dr. Thalia Pachiyannakis, an obstetrician and gynecologist who volunteered at the Nasser Medical Complex. “We all saw evidence of a death toll that is certainly much higher than what is reported by the Gaza Ministry of Health,” adds Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, a trauma surgeon who volunteered at the European Hospital.

The shame falls over decades in which individual Palestinian losses due to the establishment of Israel have not been justly settled. There is no other way than for each family to present its case. Each family must understand they either get restored to their property or they are financially compensated for it. America has bought land in the past. Land purchases can be used to settle this. However, there is also a religious war going on. That is more difficult to settle.

The American people are suffering on a daily basis. 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, most having $500 or less as a safety net. In 2020, BEFORE COVID, Yale University estimated that 70,000 Americans would die that year from lack of access to health insurance. That’s up from estimates 20 years ago of 20-30 thousand deaths per year from lack of access to health insurance. How many constituents of those bozos would choose to slaughter women and children rather than have access to healthcare? Our infrastructure is crumbling, trains derailed, bridges falling. How many Americans would choose the mass murder over investment in infrastructure? Most Americans are concerned about the climate crisis. In just the first 8 weeks of this horrific slaughter JUST the emissions from planes, tanks, etc was more than 20 small countries combined. The worst contributor being the massive supply planes we used to ship the armaments that would slaughter these people. That doesn’t even take into consideration the toxic substances released from the mass destruction of buildings including, but not limited to, asbestos. How many Americans would choose to kill children rather than spend that money on reducing our carbon footprint, would choose to slaughter children now and create the conditions that would make life untenable for their children and great grandchildren?

This isn’t a natural disaster, something beyond everyone’s control, this is an intentional infliction of mass killings of civilians, the majority women and children. These deaths are the result of Mass bombings, targeted attacks by snipers, tanks, and drones. It could be stopped within 24-48 hours if the Israelis would agree to a permanent ceasefire or the US and others would immediately end all shipments of military and financial aid. Living men are consciously deciding every day to continue this murder spree. Whether you call it genocide or ethnic cleansing or any other name. Every hour that the US and the west refuse to take responsible action, refuse to exert the pressure available to them, refuse to discontinue funding and arming Israel they are responsible for more deaths. Every day, every hour should be counted not in minutes or hours but in deaths. Because every delay results in more innocent lives lost, more children orphaned, more children crippled by the loss of one or more limbs, severe burns, including from white phosphorus, the use of which is a war crime. There are 2.3 million reasons to stop this immediately and not a single reason to continue.

Every Palestinian family that has suffered loss due to the establishment and conduct of the State of Israel deserves their day in court and a fair settlement. Israel has stated that its goal is to exterminate Hamas in Gaza. It is not Israel's goal to exterminate every Palestinian. To say so is to bear false witness against one's neighbor. The United States has provided Israel the military capability to kill most of the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has not done so. Take care in the choice of words when you seek to advocate for the oppressed. Credibility is essential to gaining support. A lot of Americans detect one-sidedness when they hear it.

Normal death rates is about 12000 per million in most western countries. This is a normal rate without conflict in a country with good health services. Thus 25000 would be a reasonable number of deaths in Gaza over 9 months outside a warfare situation. Considering there are many militants killed then even 38000 reported by the Gaza Health Ministry implies that the number of non-combatant deaths is astonishing low.
