Hello everyone I’m glad I found the site very informative. I retired in 2022 and had a lot of time on my hands to sit around and do some drinking. I should’ve kept working. It got so bad that my daughter noticed my decline very quickly. She showed me a picture of myself one year prior and then showed me a current picture and it was drastic. I had to immediately go look in the mirror because I thought I still looked cool, because I looked 10 years older in one year and some change. I called recovery centers of America. Even my address went upstairs, took a shower, pack my bags and went away for 30 days. It was a great decision. It lasted for about nine months. I’m not as bad as I was before but I see I still got a lot of time on my hands so I have to make some changes. My start date is going to be March 8, 2024.

Last time I got drunk I was sick in the street like a total scumbag, did endless shots with fake pub friends, woke up on a friends sofa (unsure how I got there) and had a 3 day hang over in which I thought I had alcohol poisoning. When I caught up with my daughter who I hadn't seen in a week, all I wanted to do was sleep it off. I haven't touched a drop since 5th April (longest stint since teenage - not even a mid week top up. Nothing). Got rid of all the booze in the house. I'm done. Since then I have so much more energy and I'm a better person. More focused and a better dad.

Did detox in 2017 was drinking at least 6 beers and 3 shots of vodka a night. Now slowly been drinking more and more from a couple to 5 a day. So last Monday I deiced to taper it off and try to quit again. Yesterday I started to get sick and nauseas, hope that goes away soon and pull through this.

i know how you feel. I've been drinking heavily for the last 30 years. Time is on your side. I'm 52. Got a box of beers with my shopping 2 nights ago. Ended up drinking throughout the entire night. In the morning went to the supermarket to get more booze. When that ran out i went to the pub, had 2 beers then got a 6 pack to drink at home. Had 2 beers then eventually fell asleep out of exhaustion. Woke up at 3 in the morning with the hangover kicking in and the depression on top of regrets and emotional heart ache meant I couldn't go back to sleep. Fear for my future too may have released adrenailin too. I fell asleep around 10am i woke up about 3pm and I feel more depresssed than I've felt in years. I've got to get out of this cycle. good luck man.

Super helpful video! I have been a light drinker all my life and don't abuse alcohol. But if you're a problem drinker you need to quit or cut it down. The lower your weekly consumption of alcohol, the lower your lifetime risk of an alcohol related illness. If you're a heavy drinker, stopping suddenly or reducing your alcohol use too quickly, can lead to severe health complications, including seizures and even death. Consult your GP or a local alcohol counsellor before you try quitting. Thanks for the valuable and very useful information Doctor O'Donovan!🙌❤👍

If you are a light drinker you should consider eliminating it altogether. Do you REALLY get that much enjoyment from drinking a poison? Is there REALLY any benefit?
Then why do it at all. I can ingest poison in small doses and it won't hurt me, but it surely isn't good for me.

Drinking for 15yrs and have tried quitting in the past 2 years (failed). No dependency (no shaky hands, trembling, etc). No cravings during the day or party. No health issue. Only time i drink is before bed. I used to be able to perform normally even after drinking. But with body getting used to alcohol, the volume has surged to the point even i feel is too much (700ml whisky over 3 nights). This amount causes me to have headache in the morning and/or overslept till afternoon.
I want to quit because I want my morning time back, I want my clear mind when i wake up in the morning. I really dislike the headache in the morning.
Sleepy disorder occur within 3 days of no drinking but i managed to overcome that. On 5th day onwards, every night, I feel the urge to drink before bed. Tried all kinds of distractions, yet to be successful. Will continue to try.

Quick question (hopefully) - I want to cut down on alcohol for my overall health. I have one glass of wine each night (according to bottle, it is actually 2 standard drinks). It's my way of relaxing and winding down after a really hard day. I'm a mum to 3 kids, the eldest with special needs, and my days are incredibly stressful and exhausting. There is no off switch for me and no one else to take over the care needs of my eldest while I have a break. I can't even take one day off as some of what my eldest needs can't be done by anyone else, and needs doing several times a day. There is nothing else I know to do in place of that glass of wine to help me relax and unwind once the kids are finally in bed. I watch a show, have a glass of wine and try and switch off from daily stressors. What can I replace it with? I need one small thing that I can look forward to at the end of each day when I'm so exhausted that I don’t know how to get through another day. I know a glass of wine isn't a healthy way for me to have a few moments of down time, but I honestly don’t know what I would replace it with that has the same effect and is achievable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see a problem in a glass of wine I wish I had your fortitude.....my son has aspergers...is doing 3 A levels. . hoping for an A A B .to access his modern languages degree....I go through every lesson with him at the close of day ..he's my motivation....to draw that fierce intelligence out of a boy i understand fundamentally helps me ...I feel for you.... blessings ❤

Hi! Thank you, I need to stop because I have a new project that needs all my attention and focus, and on it depends my family’s financial stability.
This was really helpful because I couldn’t relate with heavy drinking, never had a family problem or anything like that, but that doesn’t mean it is not a problem. Could be worse because I could excuse myself saying that it’s not a problem but I can clearly see productivity issues and a level of dependency even though it hasn’t being a big problem….yet.

My problem is I can’t play video games without drinking and I love video games. In college I had a bad depression/existential crisis about death and It made me feel like video games were worthless when I really loved them. I turned to alcohol to continue doing what I loved but the consequences were I got hooked. I’ve been cutting down from 8 beers to around 4 beers. On good days I drink two on bad days maybe 6-7. There’s also wine and liquor as well. I also smoke cannabis everyday and tbh I wanna cut back on that too. I really need some help here.

October 3rd I’ve been a daily drinker for well over 5 years now.. and it’s to the point I’m drinking higher content alcohol beverages to get drunk faster… I got drunk at work yesterday went home without telling anyone thankfully the staff likes me and saved my job… but I’m starting to get real irritable and think everyone’s against me so I just feel numb to the point I don’t want to think and I wanna do better for my 20 month old son and mostly myself it’s also starting to take effect on my relationship with my fiancé I’m sure she tends to leave soon..

After 35 years of drinking, This past sunday was my last drunken stuper. I have had a drink late evening at home since Sunday, but it sure feels better the next day than having 5, 6,7 drinks a night!
And when I say drinks, its rum and diet coke and not small pours..... Being hungover most days and some days just awful has just become stupid.
Lucky I work from home, because if I didnt, I wouldnt have a job. Ultimate goal is to quit totally. I just need to ween off. Wed was awful this week! I was shaking so bad. I had 2 drinks that night. But again, I feel cutting back a LOT is so far good, but not good enough. I know I can do it, I just need to do it. I have talked to MANY people and told them I am trying to quit..... Funny to learn, multiple people I told that to, also are cutting back. I am just shocked as I talk to people and they are doing the same. That makes me feel very good!
Why do I want to do it? My health, my family, my friends and to feel better about me. I am very lucky in that I have a very healthy extended family. My son is a deputy sheriff, my daughter is an RN, and I have a very supportive wife. (why she put up with my shit for so many years, God will have to answer that).
Cheers all. I hope we can all make the goal happen!

Same here. The first weeks of sobriety were terrible. But slowly getting better. I take 4 to 5mgs of melatonin to help induce sleep. I won't let my disrupted sleep be an excuse to drink. Even though Im tired, at least I don't have the brain fog, the hangovers and the constant dizziness anymore.

Just want to say if you're watching this video, YOURE A FUCKIN LEGEND
I'm not a alcoholic or problem drinker, but definitely have problems with control.
Drinking beer is a shitty way to cope and that's the biggest thing to keep in mind. It doesn't cure your problems and won't make you feel better.
Keep your usage and frequency in mind and tey to keep track of it physically in a note on your phone or note pad. This will put your drinking in a physical manifestation.
Love you all and hope we can all become better people together!

After studying up on alcohol and effects, it became clear the latest research found there are no health benefits to drinking. Even one drink causes permanent bodily damage. Started out reducing the amount of drinking from a daily drink to one a drink week, then one a month, then only one on major holidays now at one drink a year. Had half a glass of champagne on our anniversary.
