What's funny also is how clueless Piers is when it comes to football. The fact he thinks possession points to Portugal being the best team is further evidence of that. Needless to say, possession only has relevance when it leads to a team being effective as a result of that; which is exactly what a team like Spain have been. Not to mention, look at the teams Portugal have faced. They're yet to face a top side, yet still have been unable to win all their games. There's difference between criticism and mockery. This is mockery to one of the greatest footballers that ever played. Ronaldo played badly, and it's not a surprise. He's almost 40. But what he brings to the team is something no other youngster in Portugal can, experience. He already achieved everything. There's nothing to prove anymore.

Once he reached Real Madrid, Portugal managers made teams to play off Ronaldo, naturally. He didn't have to defend, all free kicks were his, he could always shoot, etc. it was symbiotic as it raised Portugal's performance. We were very hard to beat and Ronaldo would do his part. Not beautiful to watch most times but effective enough.
It never happened, he was poor for most of the tournament with a few great moments. He's barely ever carried the team on his back either. An amazing player but it's weird how people feel the need to totally exaggerate his impact and achievements isn't it?

He's not scoring because, unlike Spain, Germany, or even England, they constantly attack with 4, 5, 6 and 7 players in the box. He's usually on his own in the box, making scoring difficult as multiple defenders can focus on him because Portugal doesn't have others there. ANd when they do they score, look at Portugal's goals, 100% of them are on the back of Ronaldo's moves. Did you watch the games?

Anyway, the main reason he hasn't scored is because his finishing hasn't been good enough. He's also missed 4 big chances, and a penalty.
Also, having the most shots obviously doesn't translate to a player touching the ball a lot. There's no better example of that than a player like Haaland. CR has averaged just under 30 touches per game, which for a team who has the amount of possession Portugal does is anything but a big amount.

You are wrong…Ronaldo scored the last minute goal to tie the game that allowed them to get out of group stage and they won the game against wales 2-0 (Ronaldo scored an absolute stunner header) so wasn’t a 90th min win. Also doesn’t matter how you get there as long as you win the final. I can guarantee you anyone would rather win ugly than lose beautifully.

As a 12 year old playing football in a final we were beaten 2-1 (I remember one of our players crying after the game because we were beaten. He wasn't a player with the best talent but was the only player who became a professional. All the kids had talent but it was his passion that drove him to the top.

Ronaldo is a legend but this euro has been proof that he’s way past his prime and the manager playing him for 120 whole mins while young talents are benched itself is a disgrace. For me, CR7 is the goat, yes Messi is also great, not denying his talent at all. But after CR7 left Juve, it has been Messi who has been clearly better than him. Cristiano has taken a few disastrous decisions career wise, starting with leaving Real Madrid at the peak of his powers. Had he been at real for another 3-4 years, he would have won another CL, may be two more, and at least one more Bdor. But I am afraid, he is diluting his career now.
