  • American Labrador Versus English Labrador
    ✅ Brain Training for Dogs ➤ bit.ly/3d0NvPb
The American Retriever or the English Retriever, it would be good to know what are the variations between the two dogs. Actually, it would be more helpful to start by asking if there’s a difference in the first place?
The Labrador Retriever is renowned for being every family’s ball of sunshine. They’ll play with the kids outside, cuddle with mom while she reads, or watch dad work in the garage. Even if you’re alone, nothing beats the love and affection of a Lab.
With such a popular breed and great fame, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Some people have noticed that not all Labradors are the same. There are the American Labradors and the English Labradors. Now before you start picking sides, is there really a difference?
Whatever they may be, all Labrador’s come from the same place and it’s not the U.S or U.K; they come from Canada.
The American Kennel Club has called the breed the Labrador Retriever. The males can grow as tall as 24.5 inches while the females go up to 23.5 inches. Males would weigh around eighty pounds while the females go up to seventy. They’re medium-sized and many people would say that they’re the perfect balance between small and cute to large and cool.
Labs are known to have lots of energy. They just love going out to parks for a game of fetch. If you have kids in the house, your Lab can keep up with all the crazy antics they come up with.
The most famous trait of any Labrador is its temperament. They’re known to be one of the friendliest dogs in the world. The breed standard says that the ideal temperament would be kind, gentle, eager to please, and nonaggressive. It also says that they’re intelligent and adaptable; overall the ideal dog.
English Labs are generally stockier. They have blockier bodies with thick legs, neck, coat, and shorter body length. American Labs are the opposite. They have a lean body, longer legs, narrower skull, longer muzzle, and a thinner coat.
If you’re a first-time dog owner it might be better to get an English Labrador. They’re not as wild and rowdy as their American cousins. Perfect for dog-shows, English Labs easily understand commands and are generally considered to be more mellow than any other Labrador.
Whether they’re English or American, all Labs are friendly and outgoing. The breed standard says that if the Lab isn’t friendly to people, you might as well not call it a Labrador.
Whatever you choose the same rules for taking care of a Lab applied. Always give them a bath at least once a month. All Labradors have a tendency to shed their fur, so be ready to start cleaning your house when it’s shedding season.
Labs also do not have any particular diseases that are special to them. Some Labs might have a condition called exercise-induced collapse (EIC). If you have either an English Lab or an American Lab, just be happy in knowing that you have one of the most loyal and loving dog breeds in the whole world.

Do not, do not, DO NOT bathe a lab once per week. That's horrible advice. You'll dry their skin out and make your dog extremely miserable. Brush daily, bathe a couple of times per year if needed. They are not high maintenance for grooming.

Bathing them once a week is a little excessive. They do shed and need brushed but that also allows them to stay relatively clean. The best thing you can have as a lab owner is a kiddie pool and a swiffer lol

Remember that it is all a "tendency" between the English and the American labs. Temperament and ability is not written in stone. There's also a difference between English show labs and English field labs. That big blocky head can also be attached to a muscular athletic body. I know American Labs who are is mello as the stereotypical English lab and I know English Labs that will go all day long and be annoyed when you stop. Individual lines that they come from and training can make a huge difference in any dog.

I've had five chocolate labs and one black lab. I couldn't really say if they were English or American, although I'm in America and my dogs were all born in this country. Some were stocky, some lankier. I haven't really seen much difference in ability or intelligence in any of them. They are all people lovers and get along with most other dogs as well. My first chocolate and the black that was in my family when I was a kid were born to hunt, but they were also great pets. The black used to jump from the boat and swim to the river shore and retrieve them when we shot squirrels out of the trees going down the river. She also won ribbons in many field trials. My first chocolate was only about 9 months old and never heard a gun go off or been in water deep enough to swim when I took her dove hunting. She sat by my side just waiting until a dove flew over and I dropped it about 30 yards out into the lake. When I looked down, she was already swimming her way out to the dove and brought it back and dropped it at my feet. No training, no previous experience. You can't ask for more than that.

This one of the best videos I've seen on the difference. I've had two Yellow English Labs, Buddy Nr's 1 and 2. Both were happy with a daily walks and a Frisbee session. My current best friend is Buddy Nr 3, a male Black American Lab who'll be one year old in 3 days. I did extensive research on breed type differences so I knew what I was getting into. What a bundle of energy! It takes at least 4 walks and two 30 minute Frisbee sessions a day to keep him happy. One big plus is my old Frisbee skills are returning. His overall temperament is the same as an English Lab, intelligent, but stubborn at times. Training requires a firm hand and voice. He is as beautiful as his parents, both Black field trial Champs with full genetic testing, slim, sleek and muscular. Happy New Year
Fair winds and following seas to all.

There is a lot of misinformation on this subject, and this video doesn’t help. Those really heavy looking dogs are show line English labs, not Field Bred English Labs. Both the American and English Field Bred dogs are excellent hunting dogs, especially if they come from hunting/trial parents. There is no chocolate color in the Field Bred English lines: Black, Yellow and Fox Red are the only colors. American Field Bred Labs, have those colors and Chocolate. The much heavier and stockier looking labs are from show lines, and are not the same in the field as their Field Bred counterparts. If you are looking for a Lab, find a breeding that suits what your plans are for the dog.

If he looks the way you say he is more likely English or at least part, not American field lab. You have it exactly backwards. Be more concerned what you want from your dog rather, his breeding and heath, rather than his look so much. You’ll be a much happier owner. Good luck.

@@accufab Every little thing matters. I am talking not about classic US type, but modern exhibition US type. They are little bit higher and bigger and have wider bones. Breeding and health is very important. I would say most important thing if you buy Labrador. If it is not good Labrador, there is a chance that it won't have Labrador character and charisma, and mostly important zero aggression (I have kid). Well known fact that marble pitbull (I think this color called something else) becomes marble when his neural system is starting to develop. It is a problem in DNA, and marble pitbulls have serious psychical problems. They are very aggressive. I don't completely agree that if dog is aggressive iris only owner's fault. Of course it is that way for about 70 percent, but breed is also very important that's why wolfdogs, pitbulls, stafords, tosa inu are prohibited in many countries. If you choice is Labrador, and you have chosen because of it characteristics, you must be sure that you have one. The look is one kind of test how you judge the dog, also you will never buy the dog that is ugly in your opinion. I like big dogs, and this little extra makes me more happy. Why not?

They have different temperaments, english are more laid back, mostly quiet and calmer. They are stocky and block headed. The american are hyper, barks a lot, goofy, and clowns. Lean, barrel chest, and taller.

A bath at least once a week? Way too often. You will strip the natural oils from their coat. Once a month is plenty with random ones thrown in here and there when a mud puddle or lovely smelling dead animal just MUST be rolled in.

Labradors and Newfoundlands both originate from the same parent dog St. John,s Water Dog, how they spilt of from St. John,s Water Dog is not known all that known is that the name Labrador came from Labrador which is in BC and also part of Newfoundland where it,s sister breed gets it,s name from.
