      Hi Rick. I had the same experience in the Fall of 2016 and again in 2017 at EXR’s Los Angeles (Fontana) facility. I drove several laps in a 991.1 GT3. which was a big factor in my buying a GT3. I live about 35 miles from the L.A.-area Porsche Experience Center. In 2018, I did a combination 911 Turbo/911 GT3 session, and because they were phasing out the Gen I 991 GT3s, they were using 991.1 GT3 RSs instead, which was fine with me! The facility is great and my instructor was terrific. I’ve had the car a year how and, as was the case this morning, I never tire of driving the car even in the city. Thanks for your comment and if you’ve not subscribed, I recommend it. Chris does a long of terrific walkaround videos and car show videos with some of SoCal’s most exotic cars. Thanks for your comment and Happy Driving!

    Excellent Job reviewing the car. As Ted Williams quote goes "It ain't braggen it it's true" Listening to to details might sound like an exaggeration but it is the truth, as Porsche has earned its reputation and its elite position as the racers street car! Really appreciate the channel and owners focus on the cars tech & performance and driver qualities, as opposed to other channels antics about how their Lambo gets the girls to look their way!

  • @steviedee71
    @steviedee71 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand getting the GT3 RS with PDK because you’re probably tracking the car competitively but the GT3 Is all about fun I would have to get a 6 spd

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, StevieDee, that’s a great question and very timely because just this morning (really), I was asking myself the same question. I always drive the GT3 with the shift lever pushed to the left so it’s in total manual mode. I use the paddle shifters but I might try using the shift knob, too, kind of like a sequential shifter.
      Since my Corvette and 4-4-2 days in the late sixties, at least one of my wife’s and my two cars was a stick shift. I loved it with all the heel-and-toe, double-clutch, rev-matched downshifts. But in 2010, I wanted a 911 Turbo and it was only available with PDK. What I found was that I was shifting more going into corners and up through the gears with PDK. With 6 spd and the 4- and 5-speeds before that, I would skip gears to save the clutch although I never burned one out even after 133,000 miles on an ‘81 Mercedes 240D (82 HP!). Also, watching motorsports, I saw the drivers using paddle shifters in Indycar, Formula 1 and prototype racing. Oh, did I mention that my wife doesn’t want to drive stick?
      I haven’t taken this car to the track (yet). I’ve driven GT3s at a place outside of L.A. Exotics Racing, where you pay by the lap, and one time I went to the Porsche. Experience Center near L.A. where I drove a GT3 RS (991.1) and a Turbo S. I ask myself the question all the time: PDK or 6 spd? I recently moved to pretty dense urban area on the east coast where I need to drive through a lot of residential areas with short blocks and 4-way stop signs, and although I can be on an interstate highway in less than 10 minutes, that’s no fun, and a good driving road could be a half-hour away.
      I watched videos of the new 992 GT3 and I see they’re keeping the 6 spd gearbox. New is always cool, but in this case, I’m not feeling a great need to trade mine in on the new one. I drove a 6 spd GT4 a couple years ago and loved it, and since owning a Boxster in 2004, I’ve sometimes thought of going back to a Boxster with a 6-cyl engine. So many decisions, so many choices. Thanks for the question. If I were buying today.....hmmm, I’m not really sure!

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your comment. You will absolutely not be disappointed by the GT3 and with the 992 wide body the car will look awesome. There's every indication that Porsche will stay with the naturally aspirated engine with a modest HP bump - maybe up to 520 HP. I enjoy every mile in the car even when clipping apexes going to the grocery store and especially when I find a really tight on ramp to the freeway. I would definitely get the ceramics again. I can go weeks without any ceramic brake squeal and then I hear the brakes for a few days. It seems that some hard braking reduces the sound. The stopping is so epic that I wouldn't risk going back to steel brakes and the lack of brake dust on the wheels is great, too. People who track their cars a lot, though, often spec steel brakes because replacements are a lot cheaper. The GT3 is bulletproof. Chris and I did a brief video on a GT3 RS that will give you and idea about why I and many others believe the GT3 is a better choice for mostly street driving. Also, you can check out Chris' and my follow-up video on this car at th-cam.com/video/OJ5KCFgMcVQ/w-d-xo.html. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.

    Great looking GT3. - red stripe around the wheels... or + HRE 101 with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Beautiful car.

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. The HRE 101 wheels are terrific looking. About a year ago, it seems that a lot of new GT3s were coming in with Dunlop tires. Apparently, Michelin was unable to meet all the car makers' requirements. I've been pleased with the Dunlops and I remember in 2017 at LeMans, a lot of the top prototype cars were running well on Dunlops. I'm sure Dunlop had to meet some really strict requirements on the specs for the Porsche GT cars.

    • @bertraminc9412
      @bertraminc9412 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure you're correct. Dunlop had to try and meet these requirements but there is a difference between making them as an industry leader like Michelin and being asked to when Porsche runs out of resources. I've run many different brands on my cars, from Continental to Perelli to Dunlop and hands down the best performing tires are the Michelin. HRE Wheels are US Made now so I can take them or leave them. At least the Porsche stock wheels are painted in Germany with no EPA restrictions on the paint they use so German paint is amazing and lasts a long time.

      Hi Jack. Thanks for your comment. Yes, I think that, after riding shotgun, Chris, the Auto Focus TH-cam channel producer might like a 911 or maybe one of the other great cars that he’s videoed here in Orange County, CA. One thing I noticed on the video is that the speeds don’t seem as fast as we were actually going. For example, on the highway entry ramp, it felt as if we were close to the limit, but it’s not until I saw the closing speed on the pickup truck at the end of the ramp that I had a sense of our speed. I recently watched the Porsche 919 shatter the lap time record at The Nurburgring and as fast as the driver was going, from inside the car it didn’t look as fast as some amateur videos taken from the trackside. Hope that you’ll enjoy Chris’ other videos. Richard

    Does the low ground clearance give you any problems daily driving it? I would be paranoid about scraping the bottom or hitting a pothole.

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your questions and comments! I don't have problems daily driving the GT3 as long as I remember to use the front axle lift system. There are very few entrances at a driveway or commercial business where the front splitter hits the pavement even with the axle lifted. It is painful to hear the scrape but it has never caused any significant damage. The biggest hazards are those shallow drainage channels that run across some residential streets as they can appear unexpectedly when it's too late to slow down. The lip is remarkably strong even though it's a piece installed at the dealership. Another challenge is pulling up to a curb. A couple of times, I nudged the curb and it just stops the car. Nothing breaks or falls off. Porsche considers the black part of the splitter closest to ground (the black lip) to be "consumable" (and replaceable). Fortunately we don't have many potholes here in SoCal, but when driving cars where I'm from in Upstate NY, I'd be weaving down the road to miss potholes in order to prevent bending a rim or blowing a tire.

    How do you compare this to a manual? On the canyon road it seemed a bit boring with the pdk. I imagine that on track it is great. Oops sorry you answered it 30 seconds later.

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. I’m always thinking that someday, maybe in a Boxster, I’ll get a manual transmission again. In my two previous 911s, a manual transmission wasn’t available (‘10 Turbo and ‘15 Turbo S) so with the GT3 it was time to make a decision. I was finding that, with PDK, I was actually shifting more often, e.g. coming up to a traffic light or slow corner. I never burned out a clutch on all of my previous stick-shift cars but sometimes I was shifting 3-5, 4-6, 6-4, etc. to save the clutch without getting the engine in a bad high/low rev range. Oh, I should mention that my wife doesn’t drive a manual transmission. I taught her many years ago in my 996 911 but she was worried about moving backwards on hills (pre-hill hold) and because we sometimes swap cars, we are an automatic transmission family! Finally, if you’re in SoCal (or anywhere else, I guess) you might want to join the Porsche Auto Club and your local region if you’re not already a mender. Mine is Orange Coast Region. I finally joined last year after about 20 years of Porsche ownership. Great down-to-earth people and great events. I waited too long.

    It’s strange that Porsche has limited the choices for the seat inserts and the red striping. I’m not a fan but I can’t select anything else. Strange when Porsche has given so many choices before.

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. That's a great point. Because I went straight to red, I didn't give it much thought at the time I placed the order. I noticed that the other GT3 RS and GT2 RS also have very limited selections - lizard green and gray for the GT3 RS and red and gray for the GT2 RS. I also just checked out selections for a Carrera S, and as you say, there are a lot of choices. At first I was thinking that Porsche seems to be able to do anything through their exclusive program for a (usually high) price. But then I realized that it might be because the GT cars are built on the same assembly line as their race cars so parts availability would be a challenge at that location if more options were available for these (relatively) limited production cars. BTW, I have the carbon fiber bucket seats and I've never found them uncomfortable, which I've heard from others, as well. And I liked the fact that these seats have the wide stripe on them.

  • @richardjames26
    @richardjames26 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hello! How do you find the carbon seats as a daily driver? especially in start/stop traffic? Would you do the 18-way instead ?

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m sure several people have wondered about that so thanks for asking! I have not experienced any problems or regrets although my longest drives in the car are about 30 minutes max. The seats are a lot more comfortable than they look. I’ve never felt I wanted a different seat. Because I wanted to spec this car to be a full-on GT3 track-oriented car, I didn’t hesitate to order the CF buckets. The 18-way seats are very supportive, they look good, they’re less expensive and the seat backs tilt forward, which would make the area behind the seats more usable for storage. I had the 18-way seats in my last 911 and they were great. There are limitations with my seats that I’m fine with but other owners might find the 18-way adjustable seat more suitable. There’s a pull handle under the CF bucket for manual front-rear adjustment and a switch on the side for electric up/down. That’s it! The seat back angle is not adjustable. The seats even in the highest position are low - great because you feel enveloped and contained, but getting in/out takes a bit of technique. At about 5:51 in the video, you’ll see a small padded section on the side of the seat near each door. To get in, I place my left hand on that and launch-and-lower into the seat - it’s quite easy. If my hands are full, I just aim and drop in like a sack of potatoes. To get out I can reverse the move and get some great left leg exercise as l emerge. Overall, it’s a cool experience to jump in and feel like you’re in an optimal driving position. There was another factor besides wanting to go GT3 all the way. I was probably thinking what would appeal to the next owner when Porsche produces the next I-gotta-have-it-car in my price range. So thanks again for your comment. I hope it helps others and it made me think about my bucket seats more than I have since buying the car! Cheers.

    Do you have any kind of paint protective film or ceramic coating on your car?

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your question as this could be helpful for anyone looking at this Auto Focus video. At the time I purchased the GT3, I was given the option to have a clear bra installed on the exterior and to have the interior given a PermaPlate treatment. Both treatments were installed at the dealership before I took delivery. The clear bra was applied by Elite Clear Bra in Huntington Beach, CA. They did it on the showroom floor where they could thoroughly clean the surfaces and apply the film without risk of dust or debris getting on the surface. They are excellent and I certainly recommend them. Other owners have given them high Yelp ratings. I covered the entire front end back to the door seam under the mirrors (that's hood, full front fenders, headlights and mirrors), plus I did the front of the rear wheel well openings, which could be damaged by rocks, etc. thrown up from the road. It is impossible to see where the wrapped Xpel Ultimate Film product starts and ends. Also, I don't see any evidence of damage to the film. I did not apply any ceramic coating to the car. The interior PermaPlate option was not expensive and it guarantees prevention of any permanent stains to the interior. I checked to make sure that it wouldn't change any of the characteristics of the Alcantara on the seats, steering wheel or other interior pieces. It didn't. Everything looks as it did before it was treated. I tend to keep my Porsche cars for about five years so I thought these protections would be a good investment. And if I track this car, the exterior protection is essential based on what I've seen on the front end of tracked and raced cars. Again, thanks for the question.

      Thanks for your comment. It’s a question on everyone’s mind when considering a Porsche GT car. I’ve had mine about 9 months now - it never gets old though - and I haven’t done any damage. There are a couple of scuffs on the underside of the front lip. As mentioned in other replies, the Axle Lift System is an really important option. Without it, I would have scraped very often typically on steep driveway approaches. The system is not too expensive and doesn’t add so much weight that one would feel it. The front end goes up and down instantaneously so I can engage it on the fly. The front lip is installed at the dealership upon receipt of the car for delivery to the customer, which means it’s replaceable. My salesperson said that Porsche considers it to be a “consumable” item so that owners know it is replaceable if severely damaged. Also, I have nudged the curb on a couple of occasions (at about 0.5 mph) and the car “bounced” back. The lip wasn’t damaged and didn’t fall off. The biggest danger has been drainage channels running across city streets or in shopping centers that are the opposite of speed bumps. If I’m not careful and hit one of those at about 30 mph, I’ll hit the front end. BTW, on steep driveways, I have to move slowly because the diffuser fins at the rear can touch, too. Thanks for the question, and if your not already a subscriber to Chris’ TH-cam channel, AutoFocus, I know he’d appreciate your signing up. He has a lot of cool videos of new and old SoCal cars.

      Hi Benjamin. Thanks for your question and for watching the video. I think Chris has a lot of cool videos on his TH-cam channel, so if you haven’t subscribed already, you might want to do so and to click on the notifications icon to get alerts. In the video, I mentioned that my previous Porsche was a 911 Turbo S - a terrific car. Same color (GT Silver) but it attracted far less attention, I guess because there are so many Porsches and other cool sports cars in the area. GT3s are much less common than other 911s (in fact, I’ve only seen one or two here in Orange County, CA which is car lovers’ La La Land). So that’s likely while it attracts more attention especially because of the wing and the lower stance of the car plus the black wheels, which seem to be popular now. Where I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York, I could have gone a lifetime without seeing a GT3!

      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Benjamin, I'm back! There is another way that the GT3 attracts a lot of attention. I realized it when I saw another GT3 (previous generation) on the road today. It's loud! And with an RPM redline of 9,000 RPM it screams at anything above about 4,000 RPM, especially with the Sport Exhaust button "ON", which is the way I usually drive it. Also the shifts are very rapid in both the normal and Sport PDK settings. In Sport, the car just spits out shifts pop-pop-pop under acceleration. As mentioned in the video, the sound is very similar to the RSR and GT3 Cup Cars that are built on the same assembly line.

      On a recent episode of the Motorweek TV show, there was a technical segment regarding tires on cars (e.g., in a collection) that are not driven often. Also, I just checked the Tire Rack website, and the information on their website regarding automotive and tire company recommendations suggests that tires should be replaced after six years. In my case, I'm driving the car almost every day and putting about 5,000 miles per year on the car. So, in my case, I'll definitely need to replace them before five years! Great question! Thanks for your comment.

      Thanks for your comment and a good observation. My wife and I have two cars and she’s daily driving the other one which usually leaves me with the GT3 (fine with me!). I don’t drive many miles per week, but whether going to the gym, the store or post office, I love every second that I’m in the car. As a P-car owner, you probably clip apexes when driving down a regular road and look forward to every interesting upcoming corner. And I love the glorious NA sound of the flat-six motor. I try to avoid rush hours with long delays at traffic lights, etc. because there is no stop/start function and the car idles at a higher rpm. Fortunately the EFI prevents the kind of carb loading that used to occur in older cars. When I commuted a long distance to work, I had a VW Passat diesel that got 45 mpg on the highway (or whatever was really happening as this was a dieselgate car). I thought it was stylish in an Audi-like way and it was torquey so I was OK with the performance. In those days my previous Porsche was more of a garage queen. Please consider subscribing to Chris’ TH-cam channel, Auto Focus, as he has a lot of cool videos of new and old SoCal cars. Thanks!

      Hello utubejoe11 - one more comment. I’ve gone to ExoticsRacing at AutoClub Raceway in Fontana, CA a couple of times in the last couple of years where I’ve run 12 to 14 laps in a Gen I 911 GT3. It’s a pretty good 1.2 mile course laid out in a parking lot with painted “curbs” and eight interesting turns. You can drive as fast as desired with max acceleration and braking (top speeds are about 110 mph on the longest straight). There are no parking spot lines on the course itself. I’ve not taken my GT3 to the track - maybe I will but I’m not sure I’m ready to make the investment in tire and brake replacement costs. I’ve also been to the Porsche Experience Center in Carson, CA where I did a combo Turbo and GT3 package. It was supposed to be a GT3 but they were transitioning to the 991.2 version, so I drove a 991.1 GT RS, which was perfectly fine with me! My 1.5-hour package wasn’t inexpensive, but I had a great instructor and the variety of experiences was terrific - road course, launch control, wet skid pad, etc.

      Thanks for the comment! I agree. The 991.2 GT3 is such a pure driving experience that it’s hard to imagine enjoying a car more. I drive it almost every day. Every trip to the grocery store or gym is a kick including the anticipation of returning to the car and looking forward to the return trip. I try to keep my Porsches about 5 years - maybe this one will go longer. I don’t need the extra track focus of the GT3 RS (or the likley “market adjustment”), nor do I need the extra 20 HP in this 991.2 generation. Anyway, there is so much power and torque at lower RPMs, that I won’t miss incremental increases in the next generation, which hopefully will stay naturally aspirated. Thanks for the comment and please consider subscribing to Chris’ Auto Focus TH-cam channel.

    As an engineer, this guy is bs, transmission and both axle are very different in race cars, GTE race cars have less than 20% similarities compared with road going cars

    • @At_The_Glen
      @At_The_Glen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment as I'd like to clear this up for other viewers. I follow motorsports, so I'm aware of the differences between a road-going GT car like the GT3 and it's counterparts. What matters to me is that I can get race-derived design, engineering and parts (including the all-important 4.0L lump in the back) on a street car. Clearly, to be competitive, reliable under race conditions and conforming to the sanctioning body's requirements, a race car has to be different from the street car. Your estimate of 20% might still be high, not only for parts but also for overall specs - suspension, tuning, body, aero. A lot of manufacturers claim their cars are based on their GT3 Cup racers, one of the latest being the AMG GT R PRO, but aside from some aero flics and suspension adjustability (and price including mark-ups), it's fundamentally a GT R. Porsche's new 911 Speedster claims to have adopted even more of the race car's technology including individual throttle bodies, exhaust system material, more carbon fiber, etc. So I'm pleased that my GT3 is built on the same line as the race cars, shares much of the race engineers' thinking as appropriate for a government-compliant road car, and has performance and sound that is among the closest to what I'm seeing in motorsports. And, BTW, I am an engineer. So that's my perspective. No BS!

      Great comment! And on the day that Chris and I shot the video, they were pretty quiet. My experience and that of others including my gearhead sales guy is that squeaking comes and goes with these ceramic brakes. There are days when I’m waking up the neighbors even with some modulation. And I’m sure a lot of other drivers on our super crowded SoCal streets think I need a brake job when I screech to a stop beside them. That said, I wouldn’t trade the ceramics because the stopping power is terrific. Thanks for the comment and I’d encourage you to subscribe to Chris’ Auto Focus TH-cam channel where he has several videos of some of the wild cars (new and old) her in SoCal.

      Ceramic pads and rotors squeak at the first hit when cold once warmed they don’t . It’s a trade off for low brak dust and aggressive stopping power. Will take that trade off any day if the week

      HaHa. Nope. I'm a chemical engineer, and that's probably why I love all the Porsche technology built into these cars even if I can't really understand how all of it works. I remember reading about twin turbos in the Porsche magazine when they were launching the 997 Turbo in 2009, which led to my buying a 2010 911 Turbo. Here in SoCal, where I live, there are a lot of very, very rich people, so I just blend in with my Porsche because I'm usually surrounded by Rolls Royces, Bentleys, McLarens, Lamborghinis, etc. and that's the way I like it. There are a lot of people here who buy cars for show and for a good spot up front when valet parking (BTW, I never valet park my car). I own Porsches because I love cars and I love to drive. I guess the cars that I drive reflect my interests, I'm not showy. Also, I never owned a Pontiac Astek but I just read an article that it was one of the most underrated cars that didn't deserve it's bad rap because it was actually pretty practical and maybe ahead of its time. Thanks for your comment. In this area there's a good chance that you would have been right!

      As Chris said, choices are subjective. I had to have ceramic brakes based on my experience on my previous 911 - but I also wanted the red stripe on the black wheels that were on the guards red GT3 at the launch event in late 2017. I like how the red stripe picks up the red on the rear lights, marker lights and interior trim. BTW, in regard to some of the other comments, I, too, love the look of a white 911 especially in the GT cars. I recently cut out a picture of one to save as a possible spec for my next 911, although it will be a while before someone can pry my hands off this current GT3!
