I see your oil feed line must be internal to the machine. Mine was oil less so I adapted a pump but need to feed the oil through the column. Need to see inside an oiler unit.

I always use torque plates they must be torqured correctly with head gaskets... I have had cylinders done for me where they removed my torque plates and the bike smoked and there was a lot of distortion.

torque plates are a joke. every time you loosen and retighten the nuts the cylinder bore changes. have you ever gone back and checked this and see if your job repeats. if you can not repeat what you just did than you have no accuracy and are just wasting your time. even s&s says to never check its bore for sizing after the plates are taken off and to not reinstall them because the cylinder will to repeat its trueness. i have looked at lots of very low mileage cylinders from harley, s&s, other manufactures and my stuff and they all have the same vertical 1/2" to 5/8" wide striping going around the cylinders. basically it comes down to it does not matter what you do on these crappy alum cylinders, they are not going to be true no matter what you do. that is why don't use torque plates.
if you want good round cylinders you need nice very thick cast iron sleeves or cast iron cylinders.

Everyone is a subject matter expert...
I have just ONE question for all the people who are convinced that torque plates are the way to go. HOW DO YOU SIMULATE 400°-500° CYLINDER TEMPERATURE WITH TORQUE PLATES WHILE HONING??

Know anything about Axtell cylinders and pistons? Just wondering if they're any good.

John Ratko I like the iron cylinders. they are nice and strong. don't like aluminum cylinders too much. way to weak for me.they might still be using JE pistons? they are good too.good company to work with. they will help you and make custom parts if needed.tatro

Honing like this for 1 month and you will never be able to open your hand as normal. Such a big component to hone by hand

been doing it for years. i do get sore if i do 5 sets in one day. like anything, if you do it long enough you get use to it. it helps that i don't do this everyday but i am always standing and working all day every day.

Man i love watching people do things the wrong was and then say they have been doing it for years!!! First those cylinders should have torque plates on them. And you should be using a dial bore gauge to get and accurate measurement and to check if your out of round and lastly the cylinder should be mounted to something NOT YOUR HAND!!! This is called stupid dangerous inaccurate technique!!

thats correct. they are worthless. no repeatability at all. i see and get the same wear patterns whether you use them or not.

I don't know about evos , but torque plates on a shovel do nothing . I have measured and spent half a day on this . Torque plates on a shovel do nothing . There is no distortion from torqueing down a plate on a shovelhead.

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

either way they do not repeat so they don't work anyway. that is why i do not use them.

I was pissed because the Wiseco piston instructions said they must be used. I ordered material and fabbed them to find no change to distortion with them on or off. All measured with Sunnen dial bore gauge to the ten thou. No change at all with torque plates . Good to know they do nothing on evos as well.

I have hone Harley cylinder going on 40 years, torque plates for a good 30years and I use them on all Harley cylinders. They are more for evolution and twin cams then anything else, but I like use them any ways on all cylinders to hold them on my Sunnen machine will honing. Right or wrong I use them and not have had a come back in more then 30 years

No torque plates & too fine a finish for an air cooled engine... Snap gauges are not accurate way to measure a cylinder...
Dial bore gauge would show that those cylinders end up tapered...

i do what works for me. my customers and my racing records says i know what i am doing. i make changes as need per application. no one job is the same.
that so called snap gauge is a bore mic. it measures to tens just fine. unlike a dia bore gauge, i can measure all the low and high spots, not just the average. you do have to know how to use it.
