    i used 3 number 1 builders trestles to support the boat on while i worked on the keel band on my Strikeliner - also had problms with screw holes and the hardest part for me was drilling the holes for screws as band was hardened stainless steel - did it on my own also trestles were a godsend mate.

      We got the band done fairly easy apart from 1 screw which was a nightmare as trailer was constantly in the way even after moving the boat on it. Checked inside the keel the other day after being in the water for the last few months and its dry as a bone so worked out ok.

    Hi Troy, Dawn Fisher coming on well. Have just brought a second hand Orkney spinner 13’.
    She’s in pretty good nick, just been tarting her up a bit and sorting trailer out, everything that was supposed to turn on trailer seized solid. The boat has no keel band and was wondering as I would always be trailering her in and out of water is this necessary. Have read a lot of reports of keel bands being wrenched off and causing a fair amount of damage to keel. Be interested in your view on matter.
    Hope winch fit goes ok.

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would defiantly lave a keel band on as if the keel is hollow you need some protection. I went with the plastic keel band as its cheaper plus if it does take a knock its more likely to absorb the shock where as steel could transfer the energy to the screws which is what I think has happened on this boat. I have also used plastic keel band on several small boats including the old one which has been on for many years.

    • @gatsby4985
      @gatsby4985 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for getting back Troy,
      think I will go plastic band route, when screws go into keel there’s no danger of leakage into boat is there.

    Hi just found this channel and don't. No. Whether to use steel or plastic on my keel. Band?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have always used plastic keel band and have never had to replace it again. I did look at stainless steel but it costs a small fortune and after inspecting the old steel band saw 2 keel band screws had cracked the fiberglass probably due to a blow on the side of the keel band this definitely swayed me to the plastic as it would have absorbed more shock. I think the plastic band is great for smaller boats but would probably go with steel on larger heavier boats.

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would think just adding an inch of resin in the keel would have made such a difference when they made them

      @@Trojwaterman They make them like that so you can drain them and leave the bung out when ashore. I'd be reluctant to fill that cavity with epoxy, It's never going to be dry enough to seal anything up. if you still get water in after sealing up the keel band and it's definitely saltwater getting in I'd replace the stern bung or just the bung washer first, they are prone to slow leaking as they age. Also, I'd be inclined to think that cracking was caused by rusted screws in the keel band, seen it so many times when replacing them, the expanding rusted screws exert quite a force and regularly split the glass, stainless or brass/bronze screws are essential.

    Why don't you flip that boat over and really investigate that keel, then repair it while the boat is upside down and you are able to properly work on it?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its ok I have thoroughly gone over it and its all done now. Its not been the best year to get people around to flip a boat
