    *SUMMARY OF THE VIDEO*
    Reason 1. You haven't been taught well, i.e. ever since you learned 'how to write' for the first time you're on your on to improve it.
    Solution 1. There is nothing you can do to your past, but ' You can start improving it right now . So prioritize your handwriting. '
    Reason 2. You're too lazy , which means you're not practicing
    Solution 2. Start writing regularly, "practice more"
    Reason 3. You might have dyslexia ( difficulty to read and understand words properly )
    Solutions 3. Dyslexia can be cured. Dyslexia therapists can help a lot in this case.
    Reason 4. Wrong technique. You might be holding your pen (or pencil) the wrong way , or too tightly or loosely, or you might be putting too much pressure on the paper (or anywhere you write)
    Solution 4. Improve your technique i.e. be more relaxed while writing, hold pen in different manners and stick to one which suits you the best and make a habit of holding the pen in that manner.
    Reason 5. You barely practice writing.
    That's because we write presentations, notes, grocery lists etc. everything on our mobile or pc.
    Solution 5. Start writing regularly. Write down essays, stories, your daily activities, grocery list , notes etc. in a dairy or notebook.
    Reason 6. Not analysing your handwriting.
    Solution 6. While you're writing analyse the words , letters and try to improve the manner in which you shape the letters or words.
    Reason 7. Your brain might be faster than your hand. Or you write very fast (kind of you're in a hurry)
    Solution 7. Try to catch your brain processing speed i.e. write as quicker as your brain thinks .
    Reason 8. You have too many excuses. One might be being impatient
    Solution 8. Get rid of all the excuses which are not letting you improve your handwriting.
    *ALL THE BEST TO EVERYONE WHO* *ARE HERE TO IMPROVE THEIR* *HANDWRITING.*

    The teacher in my school (all of them actually) let us write the whole lesson down on our notebooks, and sometimes when they give us to copy some sort of paragraph or whatever, I always start writing slowly and try to have a beautiful handwriting, but then I start drifting in my thoughts and thinking about my other homework and stuff, I start writing faster which makes my handwriting sloppy again and ugly.

    I've always wondered why my hand writing always turned out bad. I was pleased the way my drawings came out. I then realised that my drawings turned out better cause I actually put time and effort in to them. From being in school. I learned to write as fast as I possibly can to keep up with the rest of the class. So I could get all the notes down I wanted. Even though nobody else could read it.

      Think of handwriting as drawing, because it is. The exact same lines in penmanship are the same line elements used in drawing. There are only five. Straight line, curved, circle dot and angle. There are no others. It's all line making. Practice. Practice in the air with your finger. Visualize the letter with eyes closed. Do it on paper with your finger. Get the memory of it in your mind before you pick up a pencil. And yes, start with a pencil because you are drawing. Right handed? Slant your paper to left. Left handed? Slant your paper to the right. Hold pencil correctly. Relax, breathe. Make circles with your hand and wrist, not fingers. Try it may help.

    #7 (writing too quickly) is my biggest downfall. But I would add one more--writing too small. I like 4mm grid paper, but this makes for tiny handwriting. When I use normal wide-ruled paper my letters really open up and almost looks decent.
    I just tried changing my grip to what you show in the video, and it already helped me with tilting my letters. So, thanks for the tip! Now back to practice...

    In highschool I realized I was holding my pen wrong. I changed the way I held it, and my handwriting changed completely. Not Beautiful, but legible. I write as fast as a think, but that makes me sloppy. Also I get my letters mixed up so I have spelling errors. I also never learned to properly type so I prefer writing by hand.

    I'm a handwriting nerd. It's a pleasure for me. I also am a paper and writing instrument snob. I probably spend more time on my planner and lovely lists than the doing of the stuff. LOL! But my husband is a messy ADD lefty drummer. It's a right-handed world and I think left-handers need a separate set of handwriting instructions. I'm forwarding this video to him. Lol! ~jennyinseattle

      ***** I'm a southpaw. The best thing for messy leftie-scrawlers is to alter your position. I sit sideways to the desk, with the paper almost parallel to the edge. The writing is effectively "downwards", towards me. There is less of the smudging (I use fountain pens) and I don't obscure the letters as I write them.

    Worst feeling ever honestly. I used to be competitive when it comes to writing fast when I was still young, when I just turned mature realizing I need to study more often. I can definitely feel the pain of having unorganized books full of words that I cannot understand. When I look at one of the smartest students, their notes looks 100x more organized than mine, and it looked like they study far more comfortably than I do, the jealousy is just high.

    • @shooraynerdrawing
      @shooraynerdrawing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don't waste time being jealous - learn from your understanding of this situation. congratulate yourself that you are mature enough to have the insight - then do the work to catch up and organise yourself - it will pay off in the end. You are allowed to change!

    My poor handwriting caused me problems in school and still embarasses me now as a senior citizen. In my twenties I found a book on improving handwriting and after much practicing it did improve. If I don't practice fairly regularly then it deteriorates. As a child I had teachers who wanted assignments written with a fountain pen others with a ball point pen. None accepted pencil written work and yet this was the most legible writing I could produce. I think because the pencil didn't slide over the paper so fast I had better control. I also think that I just can't remember a manual skill unless I practice regularly. My muscles "forget" the correct movements. I cannot remember dance steps, either. I am not competent at any sport either except hiking and swimming which don't need much skill. Now, even when I practice , my handwritng, although fairly neat and legible, lacks a distinct character, it looks more like the hand of a child.

    Mix between 1, 2, and 7. Biggest problem is when I went from print to cursive and then back to print. My thinking sped up and so did my writing, but then print slows me down but not my thinking. My typing is sometimes bad because I think faster than I can type.

    • @hannahpotter882
      @hannahpotter882 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same! My typing is a little faster now , but not as the traditional rest your fingers on the little bumps. My hands hover above the keyboArd and my fingers scramble away to find the keys ..

    Thank you for a totally brilliant video on handwriting and how to fix it. Yes, learning how to hold the pencil correctly is key, so is slowing down, and not giving yourself the excuse you can't change it. When I taught my preschools in ABC order with only 3 lines it fell apart after the capital C. One of my kids said, "If it is so important to start capital C under the top line, why isn't there a line there?." So I went to the teacher's supply store to see if anybody had added a line under the top line. Nobody had. Eventually, I figured out a line under the middle line would help even more. Lastly, I started out with the easiest to make letters first and figured out the different ways they get progressively harder, and put them into 11 groups. I drew my 5 Lines with a permanent marker on my blackboard (which was was green) at kid level and started over. When my kids could practice, see, and discuss what good letters look like they could make them on their own with a little feedback. Within three weeks my 5-year-olds were printing better than their parents.

    Here's a few reasons I've noticed.
    1. I am lazy and impatient when it comes to writing
    2. My thoughts flow faster than my writing
    3. I am not able to hold my concentration on the same wird for too long it becomes a giant mess for my brain so i end up writing gibberish
    4. It's not like i just need to write slowly and carefully writing full words patiently and correctly, taxes me more mentally than someone without this problem.
    5. Probably some mild dyslexia that I don't want to admit lol.

  • @jamestremlett9491
    @jamestremlett9491 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Several of these 'reasons' sound very similar; YOU ARE LAZY is the main message i'm getting which is exactly the same message i got from school teachers! I am left-handed and i feel i wasn't taught well for my handedness. I also have slow-processing speed which compounded the problems at school. Could you perhaps do a video which addresses these issues please?

    • @shooraynerdrawing
      @shooraynerdrawing  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are right, they are similar, but I'm not saying you are lazy, I'm saying that you haven't learned to stick at something. To get good at anything, you have to practice every day. Practice isn't just doing the same thing each day, it is learning to improve on what you did the day before.
      Look at your work and see what is wrong with it. Then practice or rehearse how to correct it. Then decide to keep working on that until you can do it without thinking.
      Then find something you did really well and praise yourself for it so you finish feeling good about the good bit and the great decisions you made about correcting the not so good bits. It takes time but there is no rush. Everyone can to this at the pace that suits them. Keep working at it and you will; get there in the end. (If that is what you desire!) good luck!

    Interesting stuff. I’m a 45 year old psychologist who primarily does psychological evaluations, so lots of report writing. I have always been a pretty good writer but my hand writing has always been quite poor. Moreover, over the years my handwriting has become markedly worse. When I interview patients I have to jot down notes rather quickly (I should learn formal shorthand) and they are embarrassingly sloppy and look as if a 4th grade boy wrote them. I’m wondering if I have an inappropriate grasp that may be exacerbating the problem. If I have to write anything lengthy my hand muscles will actually burn. I’m going to try a new grip! Cheers!

    Wow, a kindred spirit. Every problem you describe having, I have exactly the same - except my handwriting is even more illegible than yours and I have been known to miss out sentences or more because I thought them but my hand never actually got them down. One thing I did notice when you were talking about finding a rhythm and slowing down, I watched a video by a really good calligrapher and I noticed that he really did have a rhythm, not just a flow - he would stop very slightly just before each stroke of the pen giving a pulse to his writing. I have been trying that and it stops one of the things we both do, starting to write the next letter before you have finished the one you are already writing (I have another even weirder one, on the first slanting downslope of the capital letter "M" I unconsciously try to insert another small capital "M" creating a wiggle, or even the full letter in the down slope). A great video, nice to see I am not the only one to have all these issues.

    I didn't make notes in lectures. In exam, I wrote terribly. Somehow I made it through by generous spacing & concised phrase (so that I wrote less). Now, I'm in a clinical setting where everything needs to be written on paper (and to be done fast). It's obvious I need to practise right now rather than watching more other videos on tips to improve. Thanks for the advice!

    Yeah, I've done online school since kindergarten. At one point, I stopped writing notes entirely because my wrist would cramp and make popping noises at every letter, and I couldn't read it afterwards. When I use my computer, it's easy, and I can type full paragraphs with long words in minutes, and it was extremely easy to follow my mind's speed. However, when I try to handwrite the same things, I take hours on the same passage, I forget the important details, and I've shortened entire sentences into acronyms without realizing it because my mind was taking shortcuts to make the pain stop faster. I can write a few lines and it looks decent, but by the end, I can't even read it. I also mix up my b's and d's when handwriting, as well as my m's and n's. I don't know how to get around it. 😭

    I have dysgraphia, which is a learning disability that affects writing. I’ve tried everything from holding the pen differently to practicing my handwriting more but it remains mostly illegible. I don’t know what to do about it anymore

    • @shooraynerdrawing
      @shooraynerdrawing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      try a Jedi mind trick! Stop telling yourself you have dysgraphia and tell yourself, everyday that you have beautiful handwriting and that you love practicing it - writing beautiful things. The trick is to keep at it - keep telling yourself - and then work at it every day. Take it seriously and work at it intelligently. This is your big project of the year - maybe even aim to win (or just enter) a handwriting competition. If you can do that - you can prove to yourself that you can do anything! (Hard work though :)

    I'm left handed, and I know a lot of left handed folks use the "hook" method to make up for the italicizing. I purposely taught myself to rest the pen on my ring finger rather than my middle finger to avoid the "hook" method. So now, I write straight and neat

    It was really hard last year because my social studies teacher had a thing were we took notes on every paragraph we read and this wouldn't be all that bad if it weren't that the time limit was like a minute and thirty seconds. Eventually my handwriting had to get sloppier because nice handwriting just took way to much time.

    I went to a Catholic elementary school k-8th grade, and we had penmanship every year, as far as I can remember. It was one of the 'subjects' I really enjoyed (that plus Art class which was maybe once or twice a month!) We were taught how to hold the pencil, and how to sit properly while writing. I am left handed, and I never remember anyone forcing me to change.
    I must admit, at 59 I can still write well, but it changes depending on my mood.

      I know! It's a true art form now. my daughters are in their 30s, but one of them told me ages ago that they heard a teacher say eventually script handwriting (what I called it) will eventually no longer be taught, as there will not be a need for it. Ridiculous. Can you imagine if they stopped teaching children how to write, and instead they learn keyboarding in Kindergarten?

    It's pretty much all of the above for me, except for the dyslexia. I think one thing that hasn't helped either is using cheap/old ballpoint pens that require digging into the paper to get any ink out. Unfortunately, that affects how I write with everything else too.
    Also, I write far too small.

      Knowing that opens everything up for you. Learn more about it and yourself and work out how you can work with the rules others have created around you. Because you think differently you actually have an advantage. Relish who you are and do well what others don't understand. Your viewpoint is precious and desired - even though others may not know it!

    In school, my teachers decided to use theses special pens to make sure our hands were in the right position, but I was ten. So, for six years I had been holding my pen a certain way and that all had to change. I didn't like that so I dealt with the pain of holding the pen my way.
    My excuse is that I read back and improve my writing so many times, the teacher can't tell what words to read!!! :)

    How do you force yourself to slow down? I know I go too fast, typing is a lot easier as I can type much faster that I can write so I end up making lots of shortcuts trying to catch up with my brain which combined with compressing my handwriting and making it small makes it totally illegible. But whenever I try to slow down I can’t seem to focus on the task and my writing at the same time for very long - even writing the address on an envelope, the writing at the end will be noticeably worse compared to the start.
