I’m a retired educational psychologist in one of the most racially divided cities in the US, and I have to say that the esteemed Dr. Botstein is not considering one very large factor when thinking of how children in poverty-especially of the generational type-start their education in K5. The research is clear that these children enter the educational system fully two years behind middle class children, and this is not restricted to race….it’s purely based on economic deprivation. Research has strongly indicated that children of poverty are far behind in understanding of vocabulary, and their stressed parents tend to speak to them in directives (do this, shut up, sit down, etc), and are not questions. The research is by Ruby Paine’s foundation and others. We’ve got to address the issue of the shameful state of poverty in this country if we’re to truly educate every child the way they deserve.
