Cold War Autovon Telephone Exchange - Ipswich

This was filmed many years ago and have finally got round to editing. Not a typical explore as this was more of a tour than a free roam around. I filmed what i could so please enjoy.

Fohall dudes.. this was a cold war telephony site for usaf comms to Germany.
used to have 3 parabolic dishes on the masts and red warning lights

Foxhall. I visited there back in the 80’s as a local Cub Scout, whilst it was still in use by the US! first time I’d ever tasted Diet Coke!!

The masts used to have large tropospheric scattering dishes on them, and they were very impressive. There were also armed guards in evidence, back in the 1990's.
The museum is excellent, and the people who staff it really know their stuff. A visit when open, is recommended. 👍👍👍

I photographed a coal fired power plant once that had a massive Halon gas extinguisher system, still charged. The whole place still had power. For how dangerous it was, the extinguisher system looked strangely innocuous with it's tiny little caution signs, easily overlooked, next to it's giant canisters of unsuspectingly deadly gas inside them lol. That's the US for you.

Theres a basement area here as well that got filled in after a fire, plus some tunnels, the evidence is they are there but the entrances have never been found.
The tunnels is supposed to lead to a building at Foxhall stadium.
There is an awful lot of information about the site on Facebook, on the raf bentwaters/Woodbridge site.
We've been and had a tour a couple of years ago with Charlie and Will who were there.
Now a museum which holds events

17:50 BPO == British Post Office and at 17:55 the usual termination equipment and ‘U’ links to connect and test private circuits (leased lines) to other locations. The Autovon system was unusual as a telephone system as it allowed for preemption of existing calls by calls from a higher authority level, so a colonel could interrupt a call from a mere captain etc.

I understand many of these older exchanges were full of electro-mechanical switches. Given the location, it begs the question which switch is Ipswich?

They could regester the site as a filming location for easy money or do some basic housekeeping and have some event spaces.
