I've had an LBV88 since I was in middle school and the advice I got from my step dad who used it in the Marine Corps during the 90s that you take an old sleeping roll and cut it 6 to 8 inches wide and Install it with paracord around your belt and it turns your entire belt kit into a kidney Pad for extra support on your body.
The Pattern 83 Battle Jacket was never carried inside the Rucksack (Grootsak) - the shoulder straps were hooked over the upper two side pouches under the flap, which held it securely in place. We always wore our Chest Webbing when carrying the Grootsak, which you could dump and fight in your Chest Webbing if you hit contact.
Im 100% with you on alot of the points here. I have 2 sets of SADF 83 battle jackets and its one of my favorite kits. I managed to hook up one of the repaired usmc dump pouches I got from your site to the left side of the jacket. Planning to re-sow and swap the main pockets on the left and right since I want the mag pocket on my left. But yeah the P83 battle jacket needs a modern rendition; something with molle so you can select pouch placement plus quality of life upgrades. Kommandostore might be able to pull it off.
I have the complete alice set up of this and i find it rides great with the large Alice ruck, even with a mat on bottom. Even with the small butt pack, 2 canteens, 2 triple mags. But who knows, im pretty fresh to rucking so havent done much over 4 miles. Great vid. Thanks for sharing.
I also combined the LBV88 with the FLC Molle-II belt, but I ended up removing the chest mag panels and the back panel as they interfere with adjusting the height of the molle belt (as you found out). Now it is more comfortable and smersh like. Had to buy green 1" webbing and buckles to make the conversion but I'm really happy with a true surplus M81 LBE conversion (butt pack, canteen pouches, double mag pouches, and medic pouch)
In relation to my previous post: mag breakdown works like this: 12hr and below 3-4 mags on kit and 1-2 mags on belt, maybe a few extra on back or in assault pack. 24hr kit requires at least 7 mags load out (infantry standard) 6 on kit one in gun maybe one on belt. 36 hr 9 mags: 8 on kit, 1 in gun, with a few extra in pack. 48 hr. and beyond, minimum 12 on body, one in gun, with 1 few extra in ruck for emergency resupply. Maximize loadout on body bs ruck. The 48 hr kit is for long presence patrol with LP/OPs at key areas for 8 hr minimum stays at key terrain locations.
I did that same setup a few years back. I ran the molle pouches using the top row on the pouches attached to the bottom row of the belt and they rode like SAS drop pouches. Made a huge F'n difference.
@@RavenRedwood no, except for where the lbv attachment are. Other than those top row was empty. Oh wait my knife used a top and bottom row and 2 columns.
I have an old 9019a LBE h harness. I absolutely love it it’s by far one of the most comfortable things I have used. Which isn’t saying much. The only other thing I have time in is a mayflower chest rig and my defense mechanisms plate carrier can’t really compare the three. But if I had to pick one to keep it’s gonna be my 9019a
Something that I found out by complete accident. Combine an LBV88/LBV88E/USGI Molle Medic LBV with a properly loaded British PLCE makes for a well working combo. Fully loaded capacity for 18 mags (or just use the PLCE mag pouches for GP if you want) and you can use any molle hydration carrier with zip ties to load it up like a battle jacket LBV. And you have back support with the belt pad
H harnesses, like the Eagle version (US Smerch) and PLCE can both work with shorter British style rucks or large assault packs if you run the back panel clean. Brits tend to make a shelf with the rear pouches. Ive tried it with a tightly rigged buttpack and it works at distributing the weight.
I feel you in the back department brother. The only thing that has helped me is Starting Strength style squats and deadlifts. Zero back pain since I started doing them a few years ago. Kettlebell swings help too, but the trick is you've got to do it all heavy (which is relative). The weight really pulls and stretches the tissue, and gets blood flowing where it normally doesn't (ligaments & tendons). YMMV, but it's saved my ability to handle heavy work and still sleep at night.
Good day my fellow Guerrillas, together strong! So, my decades of Carey heavy loads in large rucks we still ran butt packs but what I’ve come to teach is kit should be broken down by 12hr or less (direct action kit), 24 hr, 36, and 48 and beyond. Under stand, if you intend to be able to react rapidly to attacks or respond to an incident, kidney belts are no good. I’d love to share my thoughts more but, the butt pack is a necessary evil and I like it more than the separated pouches of the plce95 kit.
COOL! So instead of running an ALICE belt attached by the belt loops on bottom of LBV-88E you ran the belt loops (snap connectors) through the MOLLE (PALS) loops on the FLC belt? There's an Air Force issued (surplus now) slightly padded over belt with 3 rows of MOLLE that the ALICE belt slips through (quite comfortable) that could have been used as well. I prefer the stiffness and support the ALICE belt provides but if you're wearing a ruck big enough to require a hip belt - it could interfere. I believe you can attach a large pouch on the back support of the LBV-88 above the belt if needed. The Army Combat Medic's Vest (scarce) is the MOLLE version of the LBV-88E. Instead of the sewn on mag pouches on the mesh there are rows of MOLLE similar to the FLC. It also has the belt loops on the bottom of vest. I set it up for the AK as it needs larger pouches. I like the SADF Type 83 vest but it doesn't breath as well as the LBV and you get some heat build up - any system that wraps around the chest area does. Also - as mentioned a few of the sewn on pouches are 'funny'. BTW - 'The Road Warrior' is the quintessential Mad Max movie.
I need a belt for my lbv, also have the 83 battle jacket, chest rig and ruck. Have an alice pack frame from tactical tailor would recommend, also the cargo plate. Debating about sewing on some loops for a belt to go with the 83 battle jacket. Only gripI have about the 83 jacket is when your shoulder pouches have mags it is a little awkward to shoulder my rifle. changing the 2 liter canteen pouches to buckles is a great idea. Also thinking about adding foam backing to the 83 with the belt to give it more structure.
Check out the in-between kit from Alice to the FLC. It has a kidney belt like the m81 Alice pack (with 5 columns of molle) and a FLC top. Inner belt is kind of weak so I replaced mine with an Alice belt.
IVe got an lbv88/alice set up the amount of magazines i can carry is a joke its like 20 plus all the damn grenades XD, biggest downside is that it can get a bit tangly when you take it off and put it back on unlike the SADF vest.
your missing your pistol belt that locks every thing in also use a belt under your pistol belt then secure it with keepers then use the built in keeper attachment on the LBV88 to fasten it to the pistol belt the pistol belt is awsome because you can rock a but pack and many other attachments
My only real issue with the 88 is the metal slider thing on the front. It grossly interferes with me shouldering/aiming any weapon. It is squarely in the middle of the stock, creating a gap with the rest of the stock.
Das Ding - SADF Type 83 Battle jacket ist wie immer Zeitlos, es geht immer, dass Ding ist Sogar ein Bandolier Teil. Oder ein Organiser im Rucksack für Gear. Das Ding ist Flach. If you blinked when he shot the nerf dart towards the camera 25 squats, if you didn't blink...still 25 push-ups. What, think I'd leave an option for you to be a wuss?!

Is that what the two mystery straps on the Grootsak are for? ty for the knowledge.

That is nearly the exact rig I've been running for the last 5 months. Surprised and very happy to see it on your channel
love how rare the type 83 is in most of the owlrd i have seen boxes of it just staked in rooms
Love testing kit like this. You find out real quick what works and doesn't when you train in it.

@crazy4milsurps right on I'll try it out thanks for the idea
Never seen a hat lav before, very nice.
I'm working on this same concept but with a PLCE
Hell yeah, 88 upper PLCE lower

I'm not carrying 15 mags, 8 is the limit - if the problem persists after 8 mags we switch to HE.
Okay.
