Lupe Fiasco and Clipse are GOATS to me. I'm happy Lupe is now independent, we get to have Lupe album's that are unfiltered, bar sampling and feature issues. I also really wish Clipse would get back together, but I totally respect and understand why that won't happen. That said, your shirt is fire btw and another great video! I really need that Chilli interview and need that Lupe GOAT piece!
***** Can't wait! I'm guessing the Lupe GOAT piece is going to one hell of a story. Lupe Fiasco is probably the one of the most important artists in hiphop in my opinion. He played significant roles in the background helping artists such a Kanye and Jay Z, he's ghost wrote for so many artists and a bunch aren't even credited, he's been politically and socially active, his fight with Atlantic was something you'd see out of Hollywood, etc. He was completely different from those who came before him. Without Lupe I don't think it would have been possible to have artists like J Cole, Wale, or Kendrick Lamar (,etc) make it so big. And you're right his old Mixtape work was insane, I still listen to Handcuff, Switch, etc.
"...but by my 30th time watching streets is watching I was back to giving props again and that was botherin', bout as uncomfortable as an untouchable touching you..."
cant believe its been 10 years since these two albums have been released not that many albums in the mid 2000s are considered classics but these two have earned that right
When people look back on the 2000 the way we look at the 90's now, these albums will be defining points. They are and will forever be the standout albums from very stand out artists of the era.
These are still by far the best videos on youtube, i enjoy the mid week news updates but these a definitely the highlight of the week, long may they continue!
I still have both of these albums in rotation to this day. Food & Liquor changed my life in one way and Hell Hath No Fury did in another. I can play both albums and through the tracks recall exact moments of my life. easily why hip hop is so important to me personally. 🙏💯
This insight on the time in which Lupe was signed is great! Love the breakdown series. You guys are always bringing the credible sources and information. Justin, where do you get all of your hip-hop inspired graphic tees?
Thanks, Donald. Every show I go to, no matter the artist, I always cop a t shirt or hoodie. Most of these are a collection from different shows. The others were usually made for me as a gift.
That's awesome! I'm digging the shirts. Keep up the great work guys. Started watching consistently a few months ago and I'm hooked. You guys provide the conversation I always wanted to have.
Word. Pac is my GOAT, but sometimes I get this feelin that Lu and 3000 the only dudes that can supplant him. Sometimes I be like "Damn, aint nobody seein 3000. NOBODY" (after I heard his "Sorry" verse for example) but then Lu drops somethin like his "Poor Decisions" verse and I be stuck... then I listen to Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory and it reminds me why Pac is the GOAT. And the cycle continues.
I remember when Craig Kallman called 1075 WGCI up here in Chicago and told them to stop playing kick push on the radio when it first came out in 06. So of course it's been a rift between him and Atlantic since forever
baghel bro Apple isn't a record label. Chance choose to team up with Apple to stream Coloring Book without signing wit a record deal. And he made it on the Billboards top 200 without a record label today
Wow, I never knew The Jay Z to Atlantic was supposed to happen. Damn Lupe could've been something even greater if he had creative control. Maybe no lazers and fnl 2.
I remember waiting desperately for HHNF! I had cooled out on Clipse because of the gap but I was still there first thing on that Tuesday. I prefer both F&L2 and T&Y to F&L. He's just a better rapper, maturity looks great on Lu. As for whether he'd be the same without the drama, remember Lu is all about the struggle. Little of his best work is fueled by label anger, moreso system anger, societal injustice. And the fact that the man obviously just fuckin loves rap music. Plus Mazinger and Next to It aren't even album cuts!
That's an interesting take. T&Y is amazing and arguably his best work in my opinion. But on F&L2 and Lasers, Lu sounded so frustrated, sad at times, even. T&Y, F&L, TC... those stuck incredibly well to the concept, which I argue makes them more impactful as bodies of work. F&L2 and Lasers, less so, which makes sense since those were compromise albums. Not sure if the label struggles amplified those creatively.
Ay bro on some super real shit....Thank you from the bottom of my Lupe-lovin' heart. like e'rebody else on these comments, I believe LU' is the GOAT. He don't get the attention he should. Thank you for breaking down the walls of mystery behind his 'curious case'.
Thanks Damon. I've always had so many questions about his story overall, but the business part specifically. I'm thankful Chilly shared it with me. The conversation is truly amazing.
i personally think The Cool was Lupe's best piece of work, it felt like an album and a movie in one everything tied in seamlessly n s/o Dwayne from A Different World in the artwork loll
That just blew my mind. So Lupe could have worked in the same lines with jay at one point. I mean when i was a kid i was introduced to lupe through the song tilted. So its even more interesting that kick push was my favorite song from him when he started to come out more. Very strange. Then again if this never happened we would have never had the cool or lasers or tesuo and youth.
@HipHopDX Great breakdown!! I knew there was tension since before The Cool recently. If you peep Lupe's final (radio) freestyle on Sway, he raps *"Craig Kallman called WGCI to stop playing Kick Push, we was like what the f**k??/ F**k are you doing, Tried to bring our crew down, tried to ruin us/ Chilly got locked up and everything stopped/ I wanted to stop rapping, crying on to him on the phone like I couldn't"* After watching this video, it seems to me that after Chill refinanced to fund pushing Kick Push that the single got sabotaged but by that time the public was messing with it. Since according to Chill Kalman hated the entire record this seems to be the turning point. After Chill went to prison Lupe got offered a 360 deal and turned it down, which(IMO) was the nail in the coffin as in response they told Lupe they may or may not promote his albums(video is online). Can't wait for the next breakdown!
i would rate tetsuo and the youth 2nd,but this is in no way based on any numbers or anything like that.i just have a personal connection with the Food and liquor record,i actually remember the day i bought it,from a classmate brand new,i was about twelve years old.rushed back home after school, went straight to my room and put the CD in my portable Sony CD player(lol...remember those),put my headphone on,and i remember staying in the exact same spot, still in my school uniforms for about 3 hours listening to the record.that was my introduction to the more lyrically oriented MC's. i think part of the appeal with food and liquor is that a person thats new to very lyrical hip hop would appreciate it but even more maature and lyrically oriented listener would still find the record appealing.i have it and i still listen to it.
The trouble between Atlantic records and Lupe dating back to the Food & Liquor makes sense to me because I was wondering why he wanted to drop his supposed to be final release LupEND after The Cool dropped. LupEND was supposed to be a triple disc album in order to complete his 5 album deal w/ Atlantic but the label shot that concept down. It all makes sense now. The Clipse issues with Jive may have turned out for the better cause they ended up channeling that frustration into a classic album in HHNF.
Loved that son.It is a mad thought .What would Lupe have been with Jay riding with him as president? And which Def Jam artists might have signed with Atlantic?I miss the Clipse.Everyone no matter which part of Hip Hop they fucked with loved the Clipse.I knew guys that only fucked with UK early grime that loved the Clipse.Looking forward to hearing what else is in Chillys interview. Once again Herion pops up .Ace breakdown Justin.See ya next week.
I keep wondering what might've happened to Nas. That's the biggest one for me. The R&B stuff, sure. Just wild to think about. Just like thinking about how grime artists love clipse. would've never thought that. that's a dope thought. Thanks for checking as always, JC!
HipHopDX Always a pleasure. The Clipse were just universally loved.I think it just the no nonsense true Hip Hop nature of their music.Although not Clipse, but related (with Neptune production) I remember when I first heard Roscoe P Coldchain Delinquent. I thought damn this is why I love Hip Hop .And the Clipse did the same thing.Laters Justin.
HipHopDX maybe his impact cause we still haven't got a huge Latino rapper to even be on his level or is he more lyrical than pac and biggie or with2 albums is he good enough to be top 10
Another big label verses artist.. RAS KASS with the 20 year anniversary of Soul On Ice... He went through a lot and what would his career have been if he wasn't put on the shelf with Goldyn Child or Van Gogh?
Hey Justin and crew- I just heard the Lox signed to Roc Nation this past week, is this true? Their new shit, specifically "What Else You Need to Know?" is fucking incredible. If that single is a foreshadowing of the entire album its gonna read like a dope ass memoir. That track touches on their start with and respect to Big, takin the backseat to a variety of dudes, complications with Diddy and double R, and still gettin it done. I mean all thru this often fickle game with ringtone rappers, petty beefs, country music crossover hits, carefully curated "gangstas" with mass appeal, mixtapes, autotune, seriously unfortunate deaths of legends, and opportunistic Grammy snatchin white boys singing about shopping at Goodwill and riding mopeds, these men have stayed the course and consistently brought quality bars with a side of fresh squeezed juice to their people. I know you guys aren't in the business of taking requests but can you shine your talents on their living history and how and why it ended up landing with Roc Nation in 2016? Your videos are easily amongst the best out, any chance of breaking it down for 10 minutes on D-Block's 2+ decades of dedication? Is Jigga sensing another swing back towards that incredible vintage that was 90s NY sound? It struck me today that I was truly blessed to have my mind formed in the age of skilled lyricists. The fads come and go but bars live forever and that is the heart of this craft, end of story. So why is Jadakiss as hard as it gets? Why is the industry designed to keep the artist in debt? Why is Kendrick askin that same shit 14 years later and hoping for prayer in the belly of the beast? Why when I hear Styles or Sheek I dont have that lingering bad taste of doubt that comes from a ghost writer? I don't have these answers... But I know the Lox deserves the question though. Peace, and thank you for your incredible work.
The saga is not over. As Lupe is trying to get his samples cleared for his last 3 albums before they can drop. Lupe has had some of the worst luck just trying to get the music he wants out there. Thats why he is top 3 GOAT in my opinion.
Lupe gets no love from people who aren't hardcore hip hop fans
Bill Murray was jammin out to him the other night.
HipHopDX Bill Murray listening to Lupe us gotta be one of the greatest things to witness 🚫🧢
you're one of the best journalists in hip hop. salute
baghel Agreed!
his knowledge of the industry in general is amazing
Weighty compliment. Thank you, sincerly.
baghel Gotta agree. The company man is the man.
Tetsuo & youth is lowkey a masterpiece
why low key?
Ball Enthusiast *highkey
fair enough
I never really listened to it for real. I'm late as hell on buying that album.
Yep
lupe fiasco may very well be the most underrated rapper ever.
He is.
Not really he is my GOAT pick, but not the most underrated MC. Imo K Rino is
when is Lupe gonna get a G.O.A.T series?
need that asap on Rocky
Coolie Bwoy417 Need that on Cudi
Coolie Bwoy417 need that ASAP on Aesop
Real Kevin cudi ain't the goat foh
When he gets good
Lupe Fiasco and Clipse are GOATS to me.
Thank you Rizzy! Both are on the near horizon. A free Lupe is something we haven't seen since the mixtapes... which were INCREDIBLE.
And you're right his old Mixtape work was insane, I still listen to Handcuff, Switch, etc.
I think you just wrote the script! ha!
+HipHopDX As long as I get a credit ahah. I'm playing, I'm really looking forward to seeing your analysis!
that Chilly interview ever drop?
Food & Liquor got me into hip-hop
SpottieOttie But I see you reppin Kast now. Isn't it great when you dive into that ocean?
It's magnanimous.
ThaDedication bruh did you upload Mick Jenkins headass on SoundCloud?
Just got off work. A Hip hop breakdown is all I need to start my chill out sesh
Perfect timing!
Hurt me soul might be one the greatest tracks I've Ever heard . food and liquor is definitely a classic
"...but by my 30th time watching streets is watching I was back to giving props again and that was botherin', bout as uncomfortable as an untouchable touching you..."
Shabazz In The Cut FACTS
man your knowledge is bananas and the work you put in is serious
im feeling this lupe talk..
Lupe's the illest.
I have always wondered about lupe and atlantic. Thanks for this behind the scenes perspective.
Lupe was Jay Z's first J Cole
Only Lu is from the streets
negative. lu wasn't supported by J in nearly the same way.
cant believe its been 10 years since these two albums have been released not that many albums in the mid 2000s are considered classics but these two have earned that right

Don't trip. 2000's had some heat rocks
These are still by far the best videos on youtube, i enjoy the mid week news updates but these a definitely the highlight of the week, long may they continue!
That's love, Henry. Thank you!
Breakdown is quickly becoming one of my best shows on TH-cam
We're working!
I still have both of these albums in rotation to this day. Food & Liquor changed my life in one way and Hell Hath No Fury did in another. I can play both albums and through the tracks recall exact moments of my life. easily why hip hop is so important to me personally. 🙏💯

Another Great Breakdown! Everytime These Videos Are Released I Always Gain A New Knowledge Of The Hip Hop Game ✌✌
Rap is fun. Thanks, Jay.
Sure Is Haha
This insight on the time in which Lupe was signed is great! Love the breakdown series. You guys are always bringing the credible sources and information. Justin, where do you get all of your hip-hop inspired graphic tees?

That's awesome to hear, man. Thank you for rocking with us sincerely. Rap is fun.
It truly is. Much love.
J. Hunte is the G.O.A.T.
Lupe would’ve been Kendrick before Kendrick if everything had gone right. DAMN.
Dude you are making the best hip hop videos on the internet
Bruh this is my favorite segment of the channel 🙏 can you do a GOAT Andre 3000?
Definitely happening. Great to see you back here every week!
***** Of course this is my favorite hip hop channel✌
Word. Pac is my GOAT, but sometimes I get this feelin that Lu and 3000 the only dudes that can supplant him. Sometimes I be like "Damn, aint nobody seein 3000. And the cycle continues.
Poor Lupe man. He dropped two classics back to back. If he had the Hov machine behind him there's no telling how much more noise he could've made
The leaked version of Food and Liquor is just as good if not better.
Agreed.
SpottieOttie One of my favorite Lupe songs.
"Some say the steroids in the chicken is the cause of the thick'n of the young women..."
HipHopDX Sweating for a pair of Air Jordans they would steal for and a gold chain fiends would knife, wield and kill yours.
"There's nothing too promising... on our billboards... drink tangueray... eat kfc... come abort your child... buy nikes..."
My favorite TH-cam channel relating to music period, super informative for hip hop/music fans. keep up the great work.
Thank you!
I remember when Craig Kallman called 1075 WGCI up here in Chicago and told them to stop playing kick push on the radio when it first came out in 06. So of course it's been a rift between him and Atlantic since forever
"Lost in Atlantic" is one of my favorite Lupe's releases. If you haven't heard it or listened to it yet go do it.
Idk why but I really like the tap with your hand when you say let's break it down
Wow Ive slept on these albums for too long! Thanks Justin!
Thank you, Yeezus!
Great break down! I cant imagine what its gonna be like when you get on two feet!!!
Thanks, sean. Need more beats from you.
Has anyone ever saw or heard the entire full interview with chilly ?? I’d really like to hear it as itself pls and thank you :)
Lupe fiasco name should be brought up as an all time great! Food n liquor is a classic...
When are you going to release the rest of that chilly interview
I love these videos

That's why ma boy Chance don't trust no record label cuz "you don't want 0 problems big fella"

baghel Chance ain't signed wit no one bro
Crim Tider apple records
baghel bro Apple isn't a record label. Chance choose to team up with Apple to stream Coloring Book without signing wit a record deal. And he made it on the Billboards top 200 without a record label today
chance is a plant breh. you been swindled lmaooo
Damn so Hov was Finna be the el Chapo of Atlantic? Good shit homie
Thank you, Tre.
Man I love these breakdowns! So fucking good! On point with every topic, every time!
I love your little "circling" when something is of importance :D
Thank you!
Crazy af Lupe said he's not releasing anymore music
yo love the channel, could we get a rapalot/scarface/do or die video
Ok, I'm late but is there a link to the full conversation piece with Chilly??
Wow, I never knew The Jay Z to Atlantic was supposed to happen. Damn Lupe could've been something even greater if he had creative control. Maybe no lazers and fnl 2.
I never knew that either, tbh. There are so many revelations in this convo with Chilly. Can't wait to roll them out.

I thought only Lasers was a compromise album. Well that's something else I learned here.
Best music journalism. Crazy back story
Need more of these videos!!! shit is knowledgeable
We're working! Thank you!
***** can't wait!! ;)
"Dam +hiphopdx back at it again with the breakdown!"
hahahaah!
Lupe is one of the most underrated lyricists alive. Can't believe he's from chi
Chi's got a bunch of great lyricists. Quietly, it may be the greatest rap city.
Lupe is 1 of favorites ever! I think he's underrated. I still bump the cool like it's '07
Agreed!
i personally think The Cool was Lupe's best piece of work, it felt like an album and a movie in one everything tied in seamlessly n s/o Dwayne from A Different World in the artwork loll
great reference! Definitely a great album.
Damn you @thecompanyman . I'm always on the hook at the end. Why do I have to have the answers? I feel like Sway right now!
I'd be stupid not to sub to you guys after this video. TH-cam FINALLY recommended something worthwhile🙌🏾
I respect not having it be over 10 minutes, you ain't a sellout
How did you get Chilly to speak? Legendary stuff!
Honestly, 10 years of reps and reputation paying off. Can't wait to release the rest of this!
Yo I love this series.
Thank you!
@HipHopDX Great breakdown!! I knew there was tension since before The Cool recently. Can't wait for the next breakdown!
#YodaVoice "Insightful, you are."
Wow!!! Keep these industry insiders stories up please!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯💯✊✊✊✊✊✊✊💖💛💙💜💚❤💗💛💖
We got you!
When are the next parts coming?
dang... I wanna hear the chill interview!
Coming to DX youtube very soon.
Thank You.
Ps Peace to Chilly
always a good video!!!
I love this series
This is the reason I'm so glad that Cole signed with ROC at the least he has some creative control. Despite the struggles he faced early on.
Great video!
Food and liquor is Lupe's best work in my opinion.i listen to it from start till end.
I don't know... Tetsuo tho...
i would rate tetsuo and the youth 2nd,but this is in no way based on any numbers or anything like that.i just have a personal connection with the Food and liquor record,i actually remember the day i bought it,from a classmate brand new,i was about twelve years old.rushed back home after school, went straight to my room and put the CD in my portable Sony CD player(lol...remember those),put my headphone on,and i remember staying in the exact same spot, still in my school uniforms for about 3 hours listening to the record.that was my introduction to the more lyrically oriented MC's.
i think part of the appeal with food and liquor is that a person thats new to very lyrical hip hop would appreciate it but even more maature and lyrically oriented listener would still find the record appealing.i have it and i still listen to it.
HipHopDX tetsuo has at least 5 simoultaneous storyline narratives.. F&L is second best. Tetsuo is The Key!
Salim Paraskevas
I'm just glad Lupe is finally off that damn label. Drogas Wave is about to be a monster!
One has to choose between being "the idealist"..."the pragmatist"....or "the nihilist"....choosing wrong will lead to ruin
Travis Broadnax Someone get this boy a T-shirt!
really like this internet series
Thank you!
i wanted this video to be so much longer
grinding was a classic long live clipse
Salute!
Ain't fuckin' with this week's Tshirt? Ha!
HipHopDX hell yeah that andre 3000 tshirt is the a classic lol give me a shout out next week lol
Got you
The trouble between Atlantic records and Lupe dating back to the Food & Liquor makes sense to me because I was wondering why he wanted to drop his supposed to be final release LupEND after The Cool dropped. LupEND was supposed to be a triple disc album in order to complete his 5 album deal w/ Atlantic but the label shot that concept down. It all makes sense now. The Clipse issues with Jive may have turned out for the better cause they ended up channeling that frustration into a classic album in HHNF.
Or if they had signed to JayZ directly a few years earlier.
Loved that son.It is a mad thought .What would Lupe have been with Jay riding with him as president? where the rest of chili's interview??
"...I said that" and "internet's batman" love Justin's quick anecdote punchlines
Ha! Thank you!
These are always so good, fuck what if Lupe was on def jam he probably would've never made that shitty ass album lasers
Lasers would've never happened. At least the version we received. I agree with you.
did clipse make grindin main?
Are you going to do Big Pun piece
Hadn't thought about it sincerely yet. He's on my list. Not sure the angle yet.
HipHopDX maybe his impact cause we still haven't got a huge Latino rapper to even be on his level or is he more lyrical than pac and biggie or with2 albums is he good enough to be top 10
That's a great angle.
Or why doesn't he receive the same accolades as pac or biggie even with his level of success
Another big label verses artist.. RAS KASS with the 20 year anniversary of Soul On Ice... He went through a lot and what would his career have been if he wasn't put on the shelf with Goldyn Child or Van Gogh?
Hell Hath No Fury was the better body of work but Lord Willin' that well done first impression!
This one for chilly chill
HELLO JUSTIN ! 🔌
love yals channel

Chilly is a real ass dude, free that man!
Justin on the Drogas hype train I see, Lupe better drop them jawns soon
Even Lu at half powers delivers like "Deliver."
Lupe's career without Atlantic turmoil = no internet Batman and nobody protesting hard for his music.
sick shirt!!
DOPE!!
Dope ass breakdown
Thank you!
Is it just me or does it sound like jay left lupe hanging.
Clipse & Star Trak records is the truth! You should do a video on Star Trak records.
The saga is not over. As Lupe is trying to get his samples cleared for his last 3 albums before they can drop. Lupe has had some of the worst luck just trying to get the music he wants out there. Thats why he is top 3 GOAT in my opinion.
Food and Liquor is top ten all time!
Shit... enlightened. Also I think Lupe would be a perfect fit on g.o.o.d music?
the cool album is a classic. one of the best albums of all time
Agreed. Lu's a monster.
