The only thing I can think of to suggest she was light coloured is that her husband, Akhenaten, favoured realism in their art. Previously to his reign everything seemed to be idealized. We must trust that she was portrayed as she was. If you do a search you can find lots of ancient pictures of Egyptians with dark skins, although it generally seemed to be the tradition to portray the men dark coloured and the women a lot lighter. You can make of that what you will!

@@vikingsong2068 I didn't say she was black and obviously I'm not blind. First of all the Egyptians were diverse and had varying skin tone depending on region and lineage - in the south they were likely "black", in the north more "Caucasian". In the case of the royal family of this period / Nefertiti, I just don't think she would be this pasty. I would assume exposure to sunlight combined with genetics would make her 1 or 2 shades darker. Could be wrong. But I never said she was black lol idk where you jumped to that conclusion.

This Neues Museum piece is the outlier, yet it is held up as the representation of Nefertiti. The visible outer surface of this piece is stucco that overlays a harder stone underneath. Scans have been done on the original stone bust below the stucco revealing wrinkles, different eyes and tellingly a different nose. What he have here may be an ancient fake.

They look very different. Egyptians originally looked more like middle-easterns, not as dark as nigerians or nubians, even if they've had a nubian invasion so some looked darker, also she was a queen and stayed always inside, so she was lighter. Africa has a moltitude of ethnicities and you cannot assume they had to look all very black like some afroamericans are, which mainly come from the same african areas ethnically. The main problem with ALL these reconstitutions of the physical appearances of historic figures, and by that I mean all those previous to the invention of the photographic camera, is that they usually belong to powerful people, (kings, emperors, warlords, etc) and so the artist had to be very mindful of the fact of who they both were, one very powerful figure on one side who could have his head on a platter in a second, at a whim, if he or she pleased, and him, just a humble artist. Let's just remember what happens at our present age with celebrities, which don't even have the benefit to be able to behead the artist who took their portrait, is they were to change or ruin the look they want for themselves. In any case photoshop is here to stay and we can assume that since Ancient times, knowing human nature, there was always something equivalent so there is no reason to believe either that the statutes, portraits, etc of these famous powerful figures were anything else that the image THEY WANTED TO LEAVE FOR HISTORY.

The only problem that I have with this is that Nefertiti had one brown and one blue eye. I firmly believe this. It is a rare condition called Heterochromia. I also believe that features of Nefertiti and Akhenaten were somewhat embellished for some reason. I think in real life the eyelids were slightly exaggerated by the original artist.

Exactly what I was thinking. What people don't realize that bust is almost 2000 years old which mean the color has faded in time on the bus itself because the artist back then tried to use real life Renditions of the bust of their ancestors are the birth of their royalty and people they would have used a color as close to the actual color of the person so therefore if you can imagine that bust or Photoshop the bust of her in the color that are originally would have been just remember to Thousand Years of the bus color being faded I put the bus in the color that were originally was you would see that she should have been way darker more like the color of Iman the model

@Amy Paps Correct. The evidence of the actual bust being darker brown and the rendition being so much lighter shows someone trying to make it conform to their belief that Nefertiti was lighter than the bust.

Do you have literally any concept of this thing called lighting? You can clearly see that the light is coming from behind the bust, while the light on the digital remake is coming from the front. It’s really not that hard to understand.

she's still tanned and has more golden undertones, besides it has been a commun sign of nobility through history to be as pale as posible to show that you were not outside working, she most likely spent a lot of time inside making decisions and greating people and would not have been as tan as her statue. the statue itself is probably made out of clay that has not been mixed with anything to point at weather she was more to the lighter or tanned side. little free history lesson hope it helped :)

Intermarrying with different peoples in Egypt was the norm. You could say that Egypt was the Brazil of its day. If you been to Brazil, THEY GOT EVERYBODY THERE!!!! I agree with TreasureFreak and Sara K ... I think her skin complexion would have been darker ~ considering that the Egyptians of that period (the Amarna period) sculpted and painted in more realistic imagery .. art and sculpture from that period is said to have portrayed realism rather than the state sponsored art of their past dynasties. I would also take into consideration "where" Amarna was ... they had moved the capital to upper Egypt, which is closer to Nubia (modern day Sudan) - where I'd think the complexions would be somewhat darker as they are today.
