Thanks Dave, sorry for the late reply, I didn't spot this comment. Oak leaves represent strengh in German folklore, they seem to be a very common decor on German medals, rally badges, postcards etc etc.
Congrats on the new acquisition! The new iron cross looks great, especially when displayed with the first class and other ww1 German awards. I’ve always found the design of the medal to be really cool. It’s amazing to think about just how long of a history the design has!
@@resistanceremembered Thanks Andy :) There isn't really anything wrong with the other one apart from the wear,I think the silver is better on it than the replacement, but the condition shows worse next to the 1st class.I've always liked the medal too, it's just so simple, yet classic and iconic.We packed your parcel today and will be posting tomorrow. I would have sent pics, but Jayne has already wrapped it 😊
@@Ground0-dn1cv I think it’s a shame that the current German military didn’t keep the original iron cross design for their medals, though they still mark their vehicles with it. If I remember correctly, they do have a similar decoration, which is also in the shape of a cross but still appears to be quite different from the black and silver iron crosses. Nice looking award. I should get myself one for my collection, especially as I have a 1939 Bar. I can see why folk like minty awards but I'm the other way and prefer ones that show signs of age / wear.
@@Landsturm Thanks,tbh I wouldn't have bothered getting another if my 1st class had been less minty, but the difference in condition is very noticeable when displayed together.
