This solution is so much better than the hybrid cards. I mean temperature wise it may not be, but from a practical standpoint it is. One fan means one noise source which you can replace with whatever you like.
Worst case scenario you have to do some DYI modding to attach the fan to the existing cable or you can just ignore it and attach the fan to a completely different power source. IF anything the fan, if it's connected to the pump, most likely does so to adjust speed based via temperature controls built into the cooling block. Obviously removing the fan should have no impact on anything. At least that's how every CPU AIO cooler I have ever touched work.
Okay, for those asking about the changing of the fan. I've got this card, already pulled it apart, because I wanted to change the fan before I even started it up. Had a Corsair SP120 ready to go. Here is how this goes. The fan is not hardwired to the board. It CAN be disconnected, but unfortunately, it means disconnecting the pump as well, as the video demonstrated. What Gigabyte SHOULD have done is created that splitting cable, with the pump connecting to the board first, then the fan connecting after into the splitter. Can you replace the fan? Yes. Will it be easy? Well, that all depends on your views of warranty, cutting of wire, and hoping it can be all back to default, should you require it to be sent back. Looking at the connector, I've seen many like this, it's quite common. This means we CAN doctor up a cable for the pump. It just requires you to know basic wiring, and how to follow which wire to where for the pumps power. It's DC voltage, so this means negative and positive. Your local electronics store will probably have a very similar plug. Another option is to check an old video card you may have lying around. As I said, common connection. The other option. Again, looking at the plug, you MAY have the possibility of simply plugging the pump into the pins on the board. It MAY require you to bend pins slightly, I wouldn't recommend it, but without making your own cable, or cutting wires, this is probably your only option. I wonder if a company will produce bypass cables for it to use? Doubtful, but possibly......I guess?
LancerX7 the fan connection itself on the board looks like a standard 4-pin. What's the pin on the radiator? Could we not just use a fan Y-splitter cable to use a different fan?
Yes you could, as long as you can find a connector that will fit the PBC. It isn't a typical 4 pin connector like you'd think from a standard case fan. It's much smaller, but I've seen a lot of them, so I know it isn't a rare thing.
could I just cut off the fan wire sticking out of the card and replace it with a fan that is connected to my mb? or would the card panic and stop working? (this way i could reconnect the fan again with a bit off ghetto-modding.
Could you make a video on how to tear-down an AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Waterforce WB Xtreme Edition 11G. I have one of those and I don't know how to do it. I want to clean it. Thank you!
Great video, Amazing looking card, they retail here in Australia for $1199, I'm so tempted to buy one, my R9 390x is seeing its first Australian Summer and its not coping, I have had to go back to one of my 7970's and whilst I could get 2 RX 480's for the price of this with change I want to go back to a Nvidia Primary and Nvidia Phys-X card.
Goldplating on connectors is there to ensure a good fit, because gold is softer than metals the port will form around the connector. It will prevent from damaging and will ensure a solid connection over time, were non plated will scuff up and tiny metal shavings get left behind as well
The practical purpose would be to reduce chance of oxidation, which is going to be effectively non-existent, anyway. The system would need to be left alone for a long time to oxidize or corrode. The usable life of this video card will expire long before corrosion kicks in; the card's going to have a mean life somewhere in the range of 5 years before permeation runs its course.
I wonder if it is possible to drain the liquid in this radiator and then pour in the cleaning liquid, and then pour in a new fresh one again. In general, it is most important how this system can be serviced so that its high cooling performance can be extended!
Thinking about this 7 years after buying it, I have yet to do a maintenance cycle on it, although I’ve noticed it’s noticeably louder nowadays. Have you tried doing it?
Mine has maintained around 55 60 c Temps even here in florida and I have done nothing since installing it. I am now watching this video to see if I can salvage the cooler and put it on my next card to save some money (probably not)
If this is a 'Waterforce', why isn't that put somewhere on the GPU's shroud? Is it deemed unnecessary, or something? Just curious. Anyway, great video, and very interesting, as well as educational. As for the use of gold-plated connectors: could it be because gold-plate won't corrode, where silver would? Just throwing that out there. Again, great video. Thanks!
At least, the gold plated PS/2 connectors on the Steelseries 7G keyboards were faster than the gold plated USB connectors from the compettitor keyboards...Maybe because PS/2 is faster, but it could be the gold...
I have the 3080ti Version and you can hear the pump is making buzzing sounds. Not very load but it still there. Maybe i can hear it because i have change the shitty Fans with artic p12. When you stopped your Fans, you can hear the pump?
The gurgling does hamper performance. I have 4x 1080ti waterforce cards and one of them has a lot of air in it. So much that if I don't mount the rad as shown in the video the card overheats instantly and driver crashes. All of my rads are mounted at the top of my Thermaltake Core X9 case so I can't really mount the rads vertically.
I have a mere one, but damn does it gurgle. Problem is that it's bought in USA, and i live in Sweden. Gigabyte does not offer global warranty, so unless i manage to ghetto mod it (not even sure if it's possible) with a reservoir I guess i am just out of luck.
New subscriber... Really nice videos man. 2 Questions for you or anyone with suggestions: I have a water cooling loop that I want to switch out my 970 to a 1080. I have this weird thing where I like to get the same gpu as the MB unless one of the other is just a bad product. I currently have the Gigabyte X99 G1 Phoenix SLI board so I'm looking for the same in a gpu. Should I... 1. get this or just get the FE or G1? Those are the only waterblocks I found and currently the G1 is $60 cheaper. They seem like they are the same PCB 2. What are the dimensions of that radiator? NOTE: I really like the pcb of the Xtreme non WaterForce. I feel like if a block was made for that card it could overclock really well. I also really like the 12+2 Power on the WaterForce card. Thanks for the knowledge and experiments in your videos and any input to my comment.
If I do get this that blackplate is getting custom painted along with the sleeving getting changed to white. I have a white an orange build with a small amount of black.
I have this card but its the ti version. The pump isnt working, i can tell because it reaches 70C at idle and 100C+ under load. The radiator fan ramps up to max but the air coming off the radiator is cold! I opened up the shroud like you did to check if maybe the pump cable came loose but everything looks good. Any tips beside RMA to gigabyte?
my dear friend would like to know if you have the possibility of using other fans kind of like Pro ML120 LED Corsair in push pull, my doubt is, and the pump will be able to be connected in this 4 pin connector ?? Please help me
Sometimes reviews on Newegg or Amazon aren't the best information. Some people will say it's the best product ever immediately after buying it without having much chance of actually using it, and some people will say it's the worst product ever because it broke after 2 days, but they'll fail to mention it's probably because they dropped it on the floor or something.
i have one and it seems pretty quiet, can't hear it over the big WD blacks and my case fans (corsair MLs) anyways. there's a reddit thread where some people talk about the water gurgling noises, seems like some QC issues but apparently they are good about RMA'ing them. idk, maybe i got lucky.
Do you recommend changing the liquid/water in a 2 and a half year old aio 120mm cooler I have a corsair one and since the water slowly evaporates in custom loops I feel like it evaporates in these too and my pump even makes a weird noise every couple of seconds I think it's because it doesn't have water in the pump for a while or something
the fan is hardwired in. The only way to replace it would be to cut it and wire it to a connector, which would void the warranty. You can turn the fan off and just use a better one.
Wrong. Where do you see the fan hardwired in? It disconnects from the board, so it can be replaced. You would need fan cable extensions, or fabricate a longer one yourself.
The connection cycles remain about the same. You're still getting thousands of connection cycles without gold plating. The issue we normally take with gold plating is when companies advertise reduced latency (several peripheral makers, including Rosewill, have done this). You could potentially argue oxidation is reduced, though you'd have to leave a system untouched for a seriously long time to worry about that. Also worth noting that the liquid is the hard limit on this card. Permeation will start eating away its usable life with a mean time of around 5 years. Any connector will survive that, unless completely and purposefully abused by the owner.
Prove to me how friction reduces performance of electric signals and you might be on to something. Otherwise as GN stated the only real purpose of covering any metal surface with another type of metal is to avoid oxidation. Other than that it's purpose is mostly aesthetic although you could argue that in some cases it enhances durability. For instance if you put a copper water block and a nickel plated one beside each other the latter would last longer. On the other hand the time it takes for a copper water block to be destroyed by oxidation in a normal working environment is way longer than it would ever be useful.
We'll produce the content we like producing. Traffic metrics don't drive our content, interest does; that said, the traffic metrics do suggest that you are incorrect. We like doing them, a lot can be learned from the process (you wouldn't be able to see the PCB without the tear-down), and it's a good use of production time while we work on the PCB analysis and review (which require a tear-down).
I like the tear downs it shows you exactly what you are buying with your money, it's kind of like knowing what's in a pre built computer and if it's worth it or not.
Well I'm in need of repasting mine, so here i am all these years later. Your content is as informative, educational and helpful as always
I've learned a lot from the tear down videos. Keep them coming!
This solution is so much better than the hybrid cards. I mean temperature wise it may not be, but from a practical standpoint it is. One fan means one noise source which you can replace with whatever you like.
and no dust at all in a place thats hard to clean!
The way the fan and pump are connected might make changing the fan a bit more difficult than a simple swap.
Worst case scenario you have to do some DYI modding to attach the fan to the existing cable or you can just ignore it and attach the fan to a completely different power source. IF anything the fan, if it's connected to the pump, most likely does so to adjust speed based via temperature controls built into the cooling block. Nice another tear-down video :D
and the Minecraft Steve is back :D

Wow! Thats a well built card! Reminds me of the fury x
Goldplating on connectors is there to ensure a good fit, because gold is softer than metals the port will form around the connector. It will prevent from damaging and will ensure a solid connection over time, were non plated will scuff up and tiny metal shavings get left behind as well
lol you do realize that's its only gold 'plating' right?
I can gold-plate myself too, that'd make me soft and take shape of the person I hold?
Don't be ignorant. It's also goldplated because gold does not oxide.
exactly! that's the only point. it's gold 'plated' to prevent corrosion
The practical purpose would be to reduce chance of oxidation, which is going to be effectively non-existent, anyway. The system would need to be left alone for a long time to oxidize or corrode. Can we get a tear down of GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce RTX 3080 XTREME WATERFORCE ?
Sad seeing that beautiful card in pieces
Steve, why no mention that it appears as if you can open up a plug on the pump block? Was I seeing things or does that look like a plug?
Did see that, but honestly, not 100% sure what it does right now. Trying to find out.

So I need to know. Is that square fit screw on the side of the pump a fill port? And what is the damn key for it?
sing the white board for that purpose is a great idea.
is that square shape screw indentation on the plastic pump cover a fillport? 12:32
Wonder if this padding on the inductors helps with potential coil whine ?

The mosfet was covered by cooler that is better than the msi gtx1080 water force.
Does this card come with the premium package too as the air cooled version ( that package which contains mouse pad, vr link...etc)?
No it does not.

Gold plating matters. It doesn't matter in digital world, but in the analogue it does.
he already said that.
so the only way to change the rad fan would be to cut/splice the fan wire? that sucks
@gamer nexus can you speak more about the pump noise? I've read several reviews from Newegg that the pump is very loud.
