My 4200 dremel just stopped. I read the manual thinking there must be a reset button and saw the part about the brushes but didn't think that work. I found this video and was pretty dubious that just removing the brushes and reinstalling them would fix it, but had no other options and decided to give it a try. Well, it worked!! Needless to say, I was quite surpised! Thank you!
Well I almost threw away my 4200 Dremel away but thought hey maybe someone else had a problem also. Walla… watched your video followed your suggestions and repeated them with mine. Eureka… saved me time and money. Took less than a minute. Thank you again. I won’t hesitate to look for any other situations on your site in the future.
Can't believe this worked...first time I used my drumel turned it off and it wouldn't turn back on...had to try it a couple of times and stretch the springs a bit and wow! it works
Brian, some time ago I had a HF corded impact wrench, and one of the brushes was missing. I went to my go to guy, and he's got stuff that's well organized. After a little digging, he found one that was close, he rubbed it on sandpaper and got it to work. If a brush holds up, a bit of fine sandpaper can just be the ticket like mentioned above. Glad you were able to get it working.
@@ThatFixItGuy by the way, Brian, the lead in a pencil IS similar to a motor brush. The pencil lead is not lead anymore, but carbon and clay. That's why there's a grading system for them. And I don't know why pencils aren't #1. Here's a dad joke for you. Where's the biggest pencil made? Pencil-vania.
Thank you so much I had maybe used my 4000 model maybe 4 or 6 times and right in the middle of a project it just dies. So after being bummed thinking it was the dail or something and then I found your video . Sure enough worked just like normal. Thanks for saving me some money and stress. I Appreciate it and keep up the good work .
Yep thanks! I have a model 395 type 5 (Variable) which I was using to clean metal cookware with "Sanding Mops" I bought on EBay. The Dremel is about 25 years old but I do not use it frequently. It quit running this past week but was not overheated I thought. So I did open one brush and it looked great and knew the brush was not faulty, but never thought about the little brass contact I noted on the top. Then I watched your video. Before dismantling, I tried the tool again and it runs fine now. All I did was open one brush port and that must have been the one! Saves me from messing with it further. I should have known as I am familiar with old model trains which have such set ups and they eventually fail to run because the armature contact parts wear out. Easy to repair. Same here. PS, I have that little wrench you speak of because mine is the older model which has the "Chuck" mount on the front. Usually I do not have to wrench tighten the attachments in the chuck---hand tight works for me.
The turn it on 5 minutes high speed tip really helped. Before that i stretched the spring outwards a little bit and shaved them completely flat using some 80 gritt.
Nice to know. I didn't think the brushes were that finicky. Also where the heck do you find a Dremel 4200 I looked on Amazon at every hardware store in town. They have 4300 with the same unscrewable stupid chuck. It's like this mythical Beast does not exist.
Late question. I have an older variable speed dremel, but it will only run if it's set to the max speed. Would that be a brush issue, or something else?
My brand new Dremel 4000 tripped my circuit breaker, now Dremel is useless and won't work. I spent a lot on this entire set which includes the flex shaft. My Dremel Lite Cordless also won't work! Bought it this year, second time I was going to use it bc brand new Dremel won't work. I'm starting to think the quality of this brand is crap. Any advise on either?
I have the DREMEL 4300, Iv used it 3 times, less then 10 minutes of use. I let my broke-ass neighbour borrow it and he broke it within 5 minutes.. He said he was using it as a drill and it just shutoff mid drilling... FIRST OFF, WHY ARE YOU USING A DREMEL AS A DRILL..... when i have 3 drills and one i could of gave him for free Anyways, lets hope i can fix this thing.... you could just run it over with van tell wife it broke and you need a new better grinder lol
LOL! 😂 I May have to try this and see if it will work. Thank you for the Idea!
My Dremel just quit. Saw your video. Reseated the brushes. Ta daaaaa!!!!!Thanks a dremillion!!!!

I was ready to toss mine in the trash. Saw your video...BAM! Back to work!! Thanks for saving me from buying a new one.
So glad I saw this video!!! Thank you!! I thought my 4300 was kaputt. Working like new!!
Thank you! My dremel just stopped wanting to cut anything & didn't know why. Now I know to check my brushes & buy spare ones!💯
I bet this is the issue. These little machines are pretty awesome and usually last a long time.
Can't believe this worked...first time I used my drumel turned it off and it wouldn't turn back on...had to try it a couple of times and stretch the springs a bit and wow! it works

Every "Tinkerer" should have at least two of these!
I own 3...
Right on. I already started looking on the marketplace for a new one.

That is awesome! It is good to know a guy like that. Never thought about sanding a brush. Good to know! Thanks Bryant.

That’s awesome that is all it was. Great tips brother
I know I was freaking a bit Steve. Glad is was that easy.
Hey Brian thanks for the great information, pretty simple that rascal is flat out screaming now 👍
I know Britt! The thing will go. Such a good tool. I was pretty surprised that I even had this hiccup.
This helped me with my rotary tool. Was basically brand new and just ceased functioning.
I do like your quick-release chuck!
Great fix!!!
Thank you. So happy it was easy.

Was able to fix mine thank you
Great!!
Glad this could help.
i will check that copper connection bit, fingers crossed 😂
Thank you! Worked perfect on my 4000. I was kinda upset that it just se
Oops. Just seemed to sputter out and quit on me. My brushes were fine but one of those screw covers was a little loose. Tightened them and VROOM!
Why are they even called brushes anyway? Look like they should be called springs!

Half the video spent running high school popularity contests. Quarter of the video discussing things that have nothing to do with the problem.
glad i'm not the only one who felt this way. some people like the sound of their own voice a little too much
i have one the variable speed quit working now it runs full speed no matter the setting
Mine will run for about a half a minute, before shutting itself off, as if a thermal bi-metal device is doing it

That is crazy. I have not pulled mine out in a while. Is there a fuse in yours?
Didnt work for me unfortunately, only had it 3 months. Terrible quality

Of course nothing works for me. Brand new not even used for 3 hours. Sanded it down. Moved the springs. Nothing...
Helpful but it would have been better if he had edited out extraneous or unimportant chat.
I’m working on the chatting.
talks too much. Get to it.
