Who covers second base and switching it up on the fly

    I agree with the first situation, not the second one.
    On the second one, the picture backs up first, first baseman throws to second, with the shortstop covering second. The first baseman goes back to first in case the runner tries to go back as the shortstop is following him. The second baseman covers 2 on a pickle, to keep the 3rd baseman from doing that, that way you will have some close to 3rd base.

      He's talking about an over throw by the pitcher to 1st. He's not going to back up his own throw that got past 1st. Right fielder should break to also back that up but he may be too far. You're talking about what to do if the 1st baseman catches the ball and a run down begins. Totally different scenario. If the pitcher throws poorly, there is no run down and we need to keep the runner from getting to 3rd now.
