      No one is making fun of it; just assuming that the backwards trick is really silly and the name is cool, and that's that.

      Sounds fitting, since the idea of Dracula's son being named Alucard was invented by Universal back in 1943. Then again, I'd be just as pissed if my named was my.dad's name backwards, no matter how cool people think it is.

    I have exactly one gripe with this game. The afterimage trail that appears when you start moving is hard on the eyes. My wife didn't want to watch me play because of that, and I myself switched to the invisible cape entirely because it made the afterimages less visible. Other than that one issue, this game is fantastic.

      hum the mid Los game is a mixed style metroidvania and Los is supposed to be a new entrance point to the series as in it brings an a point of access to newer fans without changing any originals or abandoning the original entirely. Remember how castlevania has so many entrances and a long running story and is has a gameplay style that is offputting at first to many gamers. This is also ignoring that LoS started off as a new IP meaning it wasn't LoS style vs 2d Metroidvania but entirely new Castlevania style or something that ultimately be the same style without the castlevania name or characters. Well it applies to LoS that the more classic style isn't abandoned if you're not a LoS fan like with Prime for the metroid series

    Actually the idea of Dracula's son named Alucard being the reverse of Dracula wasn't started in Japan. It dates back to 1943 in the film Son of Dracula. So really Castlevania was paying homage to the original. And I'm assuming Hellsing did it just cause why the hell not?

    OK, before any of you whiney sods try to point out that the name "Alucard" is an American invention, let me stop you right there. • @sarperdogan6454
      @sarperdogan6454 9 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      ***** I really like the retro thinking behind the reason why Alucard was named that in Castlevania. He detested his father, his hatred for humans and his destructive ways, so he decided to become a guardian of humans that he loved so much. Therefore naming himself Alucard, to do what the exact opposite of what his father does with the exact opposite of his name.
      It has this weird old cliche poeticness to it.

    • @Huge_Echman
      @Huge_Echman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** No

    • @TARINunit9
      @TARINunit9 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hugo Rodrigues There's a lot of way to describe deconstruction, but the simplest is "basing a story or a scene in a story around the idea of showing the consequences of a trope, cliche, or other similar idea". It's not unheard of to deconstruct your own invention -- in this case the name "Alucard", and the implication that everyone will be TOTALLY fooled by that name because I'm Count Dracula and I'm awesome!
      Deconstruction is often stereotyped as "taking a story idea that got popular last year and making it super grimdark and making everything go to shit"

      Simon whips and Samus blasts
      Alucard ducks, and then a slash!

      Meet Quote and Curly Brace who want to save the Mimiga race!
      Juan goes to save his girlfriend, Viridian flips out in space!
      Trace suffers injuries, while Lemeza lifts a curse!
      The castle's flipped, the Metroids hit,
      Fleming just made it worse!
      We're Metroidvaniacs!
      We have pay to play contracts!
      We're gory to the max
      And there's loads of ways to backtrack!
      We're full of lava!
      Hotter than a sauna!
      Here's the game genre:
      METROIDVANIAAAAAACS!
      Those are the facts!
      This took me like half an hour.
      Despite how much I rag on the backtracking, I don't mind it much, it was just the most convenient rhyme.

      The only defect the glorious masterpiece of a game that is SotN is that at some point you become so powerful everything ceases to be a challenge whatsoever.

    • @antoniusmetal
      @antoniusmetal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's true. However, even without things like the Crissaegrim, the character was extremely overpowered. Spells like "Soul Steal" and items like the Shield Rod (which wasn't hard to find) made you nearly invincible. Now, I know you had to discover the spells on your own, and also figure out the power within the Shield Rod, but in all honesty, it wasn't that hard to do so (the name "Shield Rod" is quite self-explanatory). The first time I beat the game I hadn't found the
      Crissaegrim, and beating Dracula was nonetheless a walk in the park.
      That said, SotN is, to this very day, one of my all time favorite video games and I absolutely loved every hour I played it. I also beat it without weapons, just to see if I could, and that time Dracula felt more like a boss fight.

    Playing the GBA clones first ruined SOTN for me when I finally got it. The GBA games added more elements to the gameplay, had Boss Rush, and were more consistently challenging. SOTN felt like, well, the beta version only with of course better graphics and audio than the handheld could offer. The enemies in SOTN were either too easy (most of them) or required every single health potion in your inventory to wear down. Throw SOTN graphics and sound on a GBA Metroidvania and you have a better game.

    • @corporateevolution4031
      @corporateevolution4031 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The GBA versions were pretty much clones with new mechanics thrown in. Eventually they will seem a lot better because they are the nth iteration, though having played them all sequentially they don't necessarily add that much each time and reuse a lot of material.
      The annoying thing about SOTN is that there is no complete version of the game. There was the original PSX version, the Saturn version that added new areas, items, and familiars, the XLA version that added achievements and leaderboards, the PSP version that added new content and some content from the Saturn version. However there is no version with everything. The least buggy version is the PSN version of the original release but comparatively it has near the least content.

    I'll agree that palette swapped enemies (skeletons in-particular) can be extremely annoying after a short time. As for the poison gas ability. On my second playthrough I didn't aquire that ability until after I had already done everything else there was to do in the game aside from going to the final boss and then proceeding to go to through the inverted castle. I will admit that some things can be gotten later...

    and even then the japanese didn't originate calling his son that, that was American, particularly Universal Studio's "Son of Dracula" in 1943. and seeing as ever since the first Castlevania, Konami was incorporating all the Universal monsters into their game, it seems only natural that they did so with Alucard, who appeared in Castlevania III in 1989.

    Hey, 'Quake II' was a really good game: it's fast-paced, filled with interesting weapons and enemies, and has a simple, coherent narrative.
    I played it again last week on hard mode and it was way better than the incredibly slow cover-mechanic-loving pop-up shooting galleries you see today. Just you, hordes of robotic aliens constructed from your comrades' bodies and a rocket launcher. Seriously, I would recommend it if you like games like 'Serious Sam'.
