Loki is Laufey's son and was going to save Odin by killing Laufey in order to make his position as King of Asgard. Loki is a powerful sorcerer with a huge array of abilities which is why he was able to remain unhurt by falling off the broken Bifrost Bridge. Most of Loki's use of magic is illusion but it isn't his only gift by far.

Answers to two questions you asked: (1) Loki is the son of Laufey, the king of the frost giants, but because he was born a small runt, Laufey was going to let him die. (2) Loki's adoptive mother, Frigga (Odin's wife, Thor's mom), taught him magic as a child, to help him feel less inadequate in comparison to his brother Thor. That's why he can do a lot of things frost giants can't. Only Odin, Frigga, and Loki know how to use Asgardian magic.

SHIELD didn't know about Thor. They detected the energy burst from the Bifrost and sent Coulson to investigate. Shield's job is to protect the world from high-tech or dangerous threats. You will see their origin in the next movie.
Loki is a trickster. You can't trust anything with him, like when he let go and apparently fell into the abyss. That was an illusion. What he really did was use one of his "secret paths" out of Asgard and was invisible to Fury and Selvig while using his "Jedi mind tricks" to influence Eric Selvig. The glowing blue cube, like most post-credits scenes, is a clue to what the next movie is about.

When Agent Phil Coulson was talking about they found it they meant the 084 which is a object of unknown origins. When a frost giant catches you it causes extreme instant frostbite. Odin was sick and fell into a coma due to the Odin sleep. Once a year Odin must fall asleep to recharge his powers and the reason Odin felt sick was because he put it off due to the possible war with the frost Giants.

But I have yet to see a channel starting out on a casual journey reacting to the MCU that has enough positive viewer feedback on the series to convince them to follow through on including Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.🤷‍♂️

And Loki didn't "effect" Odin. That was just Odin's grief. Similar to a mortal having a heart attack. He was overly stressed. Lot going on for him right now. Loki is the master of mischief. He has the power of illusion among other things. Some of it he was taught by his mother who has similar powers. She and Odin were the only ones who knew Loki's origin. You may come across some anal commenters who will say that's not really a part of Norse mythology. Myths aren't exactly factual and neither are comic books. The Dr. Don Blake ID for Thor was a callback to the comics where Donald Blake was an actual doctor who found the Hammer while hiking in Scandinavia. He could change between human and Thor but became human if the hammer was out of his grasp for more than a minute. In the comics Jane Foster was his nurse.

Loki is magic... and magic in Marvel is basically capable of anything. There are no rules to magic really, so Loki is basically able to do whatever the writers want to have him have learned to do.
Mostly he just teleports, finds secret routes between worlds, makes body doubles that can't touch any physical objects... but in the comics he can project lightning and wish upon wishing stones to basically acheive almost anything.
Loki is very powerful, but that is intentional, as the writers always want to make Thor more powerful and Loki needs to always pose a real challenge to Thor.

Either way it was a powerful moment between them both in witch Odin never thought Loki could bare question wither or not Odin was his real father. Dr. Selvig is played by Stellan Skarsgard, father of Bill (It) and Alexander (Northman) Skarsgard (along with Gustaf, Sam, Eija, VAlter, Ossian, and Kolbjorn; yes, I'm reading the list of sons he has). Stellan being Swedish makes him more ethnically related to Norse Mythology in the film. Probably should have his accent rather than British.

Fun fact, did you know that Jim Carreys movie THE MASK is related to Loki? In the movie he finds Lokis mask. The rest is history. Loki is an interesting mythological character with alot of history throughout Scandinavia and Germania

The other power that Loki has he got from his & Thor’s mother. She taught him witchcraft basically. Also, Loki is the actual son of Laufey. There are many Sorcerers & Witches in the MCU.

Loki's powers are basically trickster magic, taught to him by his adoptive mother, rather than just something he's born with. Also the film tells you that he knows other ways into asgard, so makes sense he'd know ways out of it too (plus you can never believe what you're seeing when it comes to loki). Its definitely a big jump from some rich dude making a suit, to magic being everywhere, but theres more to come so its good they threw it into the mcu this early tbh

Funny story: I took a (ex-) gf to see this in the theatre. Height of the MCU madness and its PACKED. Like standing room only. 😮
Its dead quiet in the audience as they are all talking in the around the table and in walks shirtless Chris Hemsworth ... every woman in the entire theatre gave a sharp, audible and involuntary inhale. Including the girl I had brought with me 😅
The silence returned for only a half second or so before we all started laughing :) acknowledging that we all had heard it 🤣😂🤣
Great movie! Probably the best of all the Thor movies imo.
    LETS GOOOOOOOO!! 💪😎💪😁

As you love Marvel so much I REALLY recommend Agents of Shield. Season 1 is good. S02 is better. S03 is even better and S04 is one of the best season's of TV ever made. If you start after Avengers it will make more sense.

It has never made sense to me how the god of thunder can be shocked or electrocuted. I understand at this point that he has lost his power but he still can be even after he has regained his power.
If you had any knowledge of the Marvel comics Thor or any general knowledge of the Norse gods like Loki the god of mischief, illusions, trickster, and deception.

You need to watch Captain America The First Avenger. The things that you are not picking up on will go much easier if you watch the movies in the order they were released. Captain America before the Avengers. :)

If it makes you feel any better, I’m also confused about Loki’s powers, he doesn’t have any of these powers in his mythology. Also not raised as Thors brother or was treated as a son, either. He also indirectly murdered a beloved god out of jealousy, so I guess they kinda got that aspect of him right.

I just have to put it out there. Assguard. How they pronounce it is hilarious to me. Asgaurd but when some of the actors say it, it's definitely assguard. I bet they had to do many ADR's to cover it up.

Yes, you are meant to be confused. That last scene is meant to tease that Loki is still alive and active, and that something is going on.
Loki learned magic from his mother, Frigga. I don’t think we really get to see that side of her in the MCU.

Odin (Odin's day, Wednesday), Thor (Thor's day, Thursday), Frigga (Odin's wife, Thor's mom, Frigga's day, Friday), and the others (Loki, Heimdall, The Bifrost or Rainbow Bridge, Mjolonir Thor's hammer) were all lifted by Marvel from Norse mythology and adapted for the comics in the 1960s. For those with a passing knowledge of Norse mythology they are familiar names and characters, but most people aren't expected to know the mythology or the comics. Those of us who do, smiled at each familiar reference during the movie. Thor's journey from the reckless warrior or Norse legends to the heroic character from the comics was a good introduction to both the historical figures and the comic heroes and villains.

Unlike others. Thor for the most part was born with some powers. But the hammer does let him channel that power better. Thor movies are for sure the most different from the other movies in terms of effects and setting too. Which is a good thing at times.
