I don't quite get why companies (not just Apple) can't use proper thermal paste in their products. It seems like such a cheap way to make your product better than the competition's
Knightcore from what I know (I could obviously be wrong) the paste they use is a tiny bit less conductive, but has a longer endurance over time and so it has to be replaced less often, bringing down service costs.
That doesn't make sense to me, because wouldn't Apple be the ones servicing the devices, so they could charge their horendos fees, anyway?
They would rather toss baby with the bathwater, knowing how Apple does things. You lose your data, you tell yourself "Never again" when you get the laptop back, shaming you into using iCloud because you didn't fall in line with the other sheep, then you end up paying a monthly subscription to keep your data on Apple's servers.
1. It's cheaper and the thermal performance is good enough to meet the established goals for the product.
2. The thermal performance is more stable than other solutions considering the various environments the products are going through (can stay in warehouses for months, move to very different climates (-30C to 35C during shipping, lots of shocks during shipping).
3. You need a manufacturer that can supply TIM for more than 5 million units per year (that's only for macbooks).
bluephreakr tell yourself never again and back up to an external drive because all that iCloud is good for is syncing photos, keychain, etc across devices. I don’t know a single Mac user that backs up their data to iCloud. Takes way too long.
The fins on the cooler is probably blocked. I have and old laptop that has been used for 3-4 years and it would thermal shut down. Opened it up and found the fin completely blocked by a jumble hairs, dust, and dust that twined together making strands. Blow some air from the outside (exhaust) with a bicycle pump and it ran fine after.
Exactly what I was going to question - My 2011 MBP needs regular 'servicing' just to clear out the fan ducts of dust and fluff. I believe that had I known to do that regularly (every six months or so) I might even have got longer before the GPU died. Pure speculation of course, but if the cooling is poor to begin with and then it gets blocked . . . all the thermal paste in the world isn't going to fix a blocked fan duct is the point.
That's why he mentioned cleaning the fans and not only thermal paste, cause if you open up the PC to replace the paste you should check on how clean the fans and stuff are.. you are opening the PC anyways..
mac fan control app solved my issue, apple really has slowed down the fans to reduce sound but mac fan control helps you to solve the fan speed issue
I've found that a Mac app called Macs fan control, lets my 2015 MacBook stay between 40-50 degrees Celsius in this 27 degree heat. Which is great

Blaž Bohinc sweet like sugar mate. Proper performance. Keep in mind my laptop turbo boost to 3.5ghz. if i disable turbo boost doesn't break 70 degree.
liviu P Mine's an old bastard now but still kicking despite poor cooling system design. I did what I could to improve it, it is what it is. Haswell chips get really hot past certain point and I lost the lottery. Alienware laptops have great cooling, but come in a thicker fashion. (Which is fine, why put good hardware in if you can't cool it (khm apple khm khm)
@hardwarecanucs I had the same issue on the same macbook, I did the same thing with the same thermal paste. I got the same reduction in heating but I went a bit further and now my mac runs around 43 to 60 on youtube. The one step further was a memory leak issue. Try deleting your keychain folder, this will reset it but thats fine. Once that is done. Turn down your mac. Do a SMC reset and power it back on. Then monitor your temps again and you will be surprised!. Hope it helps!.. PS, Keep up the excellent content!.. Cheers!
AS5 has a cure time, so slightly higher-than-expected temps right after reapplying new paste is fine. The temps should normalize once curing time has passed. Manufacturer of the paste has exact number for cure times, but if I remember correctly, it’s something like a week’s worth of normal use, depending on fan speed or presence, and can reduce temps by a further 2-5C during the break-in period.
If you use a drill to drill some holes in the bottom case where the fans are located you will greatly decrease temps, just adding more air intake in generally helps.

Interesting, I feel like for the price you pay for the Macbook they should give you good paste.
the paste is good, but with all paste, after time it decays. You should change the paste on your machine every 2 or so years if you can for desktops. Laptops it kinda depends, I know Razer ask you not to because they apparently use a very specific compound and its applied in a very particular way but most others you should be changing every few years too if you know how
I left the paste on my desktop for 7 years and it was fine 😛 maybe I just got lucky or had good paste, I did a video about changing it and it didn't really change anything. I think I'd be less likely to want to change it in a laptop, some of them are quite annoying to take apart.
I read in some forums that some MacBook Pros suffer from throttling due to power limit issues, especially if both CPU and GPU are being pushed. Maybe that is your case.
ture, that I why I have had some people at the Genius Bar at my local apple store tell me that If I am to use Adobe premier and Final cur pro that I should have the laptop connected to power because the battery is not always capable of sustaining the power delivery necessary to run the Radeon GPU and the CPU.

Great video! Not only is changing thermal paste a great idea (after the warranty is out), but just cleaning out dust can make a huge difference!
Modern Apple laptops don't void your warranty if you just take the back cover off to clean out dust!

Blaž Bohinc I definitely know that the heatsink can't cool it cause the Mac tends to run toasty as Apple loves design over functionality! If he isn't hooked into Mac for final cut he can easily get better laptops that are still and more better in performance than the mac at premire. Like the razers!
The new heatsinks can't even cool lowest tier i5s, let alone the higher tier i7s.. It's wasted potential for that thin design.. Just make the base 5mm thicker and put in a bigger battery and thicker cooler. Why is it so hard to use logic..

My friend is the ultimate apple fan.. His fans spun up all the way the other day and he thought something was broken. I mean.. what can you say in response to that? I'm all about that XPS though.. and I don't understand how people put up with sweaty hands because everything is hot enough to boil an egg. You should disable turbo boost, because intel cpu can work a lot longer without throttling when turbo boost is disabled and you will render faster because throttled cpu frequency is lower than "unturbo boosted" cpu frequency
actually most of the times intel cpu's throttling because of power consumption, 15 watt intel cpu can boost to 25watt or even more, but it can't work at this rate more than 30 sec, mostly because of manufacture's limitations. That means that even if temperatures is good it doesn't mean than cpu won't throttle.

At least for me, it's completely unacceptable to have the CPU so hot (76 C) on such a light load (TH-cam playback) on such an expensive machine. This is not the MacBook Air. Apple is advertising it as "Pro," meaning the machine that should be able to run stuff like this without a sweat (like Eber's Gigabyte notebook), and its not doing so is unacceptable to me (especially at the price; this is supposed to be a high-end workstation-like machine). The device is being advertised as "Pro," and therefore is not aimed at thinness; why not keep the thin design to the Air and make the Pros a bit thicker in order to provide a decent cooling system?
Would be interesting to see whether the difference you're seeing is due to the new thermal paste or fan/heatsink cleaning
That's pretty much par for the course with modern Macbooks. Everything sacrificed in the quest for thinnness.
And when you get dust and aging into the mix its just a mess.
Did You reset VRAM & PRAM after maintenance? That could help.
What's happening? Power target, duh. You can play with it using Intel XTU for Windows, not sure if there is an option for MacOS.
well, this is clearly a many factor problem. Adobe's software is getting worse and worse with less and less optimalization getting into it. When it comes to watching youtube videos - browsers like Chrome and Firefox (especially Firefox) on macOS seems to not be optimalized for macOS and/or using codec which is provided within the bundled browser. And also the cooling solution of Apple - not enough. That heatsink and that heat pipe is just laughable - but Apple does not care.
Open up the air intake area with like some drilled holes and some thin filter material. Not sure if it will bring the clock speeds back up though, but you're likely to see at least 5-10 C drop.

No but I remember someone on TH-cam doing it, and it does help. You could get a spare bottom plate to try it and revert to the old one if it doesn't work.
Drill some holes on it. The poor CPU must be suffocating hard because Apple thinks it's fancy and "minimalistic" to not put proper ventilation on their laptops.

I did just that this morning to my macbook pro that was reaching tempreatures of about 170 F...... I could cook an egg on that temperature. I changed my fan speeds manually to be default at 3500 rpm and drilled 9 holes in a parallel fashion to the screw holes at the end of the bottom lid. south of the track pad. I seen other people do this, but they put the wholes on the bottom of the lid of the macbook. I did not do this because it would not be getting any air in when it sat on a flat surface. I did the 9 wholes almost at the spot where the case curves upwards, and you cannot really see them, but they work great. I been listening to music, bluetooth on, wifi on, 80% screen on and charging the laptop and at the highest peak it got 150F and on avg it gets to 135F . I am very pleased with this modification... It works great!!!!!
Why not use liquid metal and try using something else to create a air tight seal that would be a awesome video to see

(well I don't own a computer [srry I own a computer and laptop, but let's just say the computer performance is worst than the laptop performance, and the laptop is a duel core celeron with integrated hd graphics] so I have no clue if they make a great difference or not)
Did you clean out the fan's? maybe you just need to do a more thorough cleaning of the entire system.

Arctic Silver 5 requires rapid heat up, rapid cool down to room temperatures 3-5 cycles to get maximum thermal conductivity.
The temps on that thing are just TOO DAMN HOT. Even with new thermal paste.
One of the chief reasons why I would never buy one. That, and the glued in battery meaning a trip to the battery shop and ~$300 to restore performance to as-new. If the battery was not glued in, you could do it yourself for like $25 max.

There is a method of removing the battery. I did it myself. my 2012 retina MBP has been working for me really well and it still worth $1000 when I want to sell it to ebay or Amazon as used. It's pretty good value in longterm
Or you can use a small amount of acetone to neutralize the adhesive and buy double sided tape for the new battery
You shouldn't have to use anything to remove a battery other than a screwdriver and maybe a spudger. It's disgusting and should be illegal that Apple solder and glue in components that you used to be able to take out and replace yourself without all that hassle.

Actually, putting toilet paper in my PC helped it A TON, as the nano-quantum-fibers from the paper help clean the air and deliver maximum AirStream™ performance.

The pressure applied when screwing in the heatsink will push out excess. That's what it's designed to do. So no matter how much you apply, in the end, you'll get the same spread. If anything, applying less is worse, as you may not get a full covering.

Too little = Bad temps, doesn’t cover enough
Just right = Good Temps, not too hot, not too messy, just right

I mean, it's a Haswell Macbook Pro so it doesn't have the VP9 (and HEVC) QuickSync decoder for TH-cam. Pretty much any processor from Intel of Gen Broadwell and older would be the same or worse.
Broadwell, 2015 used the 5th gen CPU's not 4th generation. the 2015 MacBook Pro 15 can be upgraded to an intel core i7-5950HQ 2.8GHz quad-core CPU, which is Broadwell according to intel's web page not Haswell.

Having to replace thermal paste every 2 years is a joke. Macs have their place but holy crap are their laptops bad for cooling if they are specced for actual creators.
alcowherd7 honestly, with all the MBPs I’ve owned. Cooling is always the biggest issue. Like I love macOS, but the cooling needs to be waaay better. When I do my audio work it’s great. Whisper silent in the studio, and if it starts running hot I’ll just freeze the track.
But man when I switch in to UE4 do the fans kick up. And I can’t imagine that those temps can be good for the neighboring components in the machine as well. Cause of how tightly packed everything is.
It’d be the perfect laptop if the cooling was better. Just wish Apple would see that. Cause they can cool things well, as proven by the iMac Pro, just put that much hard work into the cooling setup in the MBPs ffs
John Wick good to hear that this isn't an isolated issue, not good to hear you have to deal with it. I have had a few laptops with not the greatest specs that have poor cooling so I could only imagine how annoying fans must get when you are just tried to get some work done.
alcowherd7 yes Apple needs to fix this. It’s got to the point where I now do all my UE4 work on my PC. Which is irritating because my workflow is split across two machines with different OSs. And it’s Apple’s fault that this is the case. Just a little more cooling, that’s all that’s needed.
John Wick yeah definitely something they should look into. Sad to see in thus movie a tool that is valued by professionals being used as a Netflix box because it overheats and throttles just during rendering.

Swapping the paste on my PS4 and PS3 worked wonders, too.
My Mac had heating problem and performance issues, installed mac fan control and tuned the fan speed . It helped me to solve the problem at hand

Since Arctic Silver 5 is conductive, it has a 24-hour cure time unlike some of the non conductive thermal compounds. I would suggest a follow-up video if it gets better over the next day or so.
Arctic Silver 5 is not conductive. Only liquid metal based ones are.
Why not FCPX Dimitri?, i think for Premiere you better use Windows machine in my opinion because MacBooks are only optimized for Final Cut Pro

I'm a little concerned that you're running at like 75° during youtube playback. I have an early 2015 13" MacBook that sits on 45° on youtube. Have I missed something?
I had a 2010 Macbook Pro that would use its dedicated GPU when using Chrome. Might be something like that as 76 degrees doesn't sound right to me as well and that laptop would get really hot when using the dGPU. I have the new 2017 Macbook Pro and it stays nice and cool when doing casual things.
I think it also may be a chrome thing - I've just run this same video on safari and chrome and the latter seems to run about 12° hotter at the same resolution. I think you are right about the dGPU though, but I don't have the 15" model to test unfortunately.
I've used AS5 thinking that it was one of the best and then i tried GC Extreme. Try that on your MacBook and I can assure you, you'll drop a couple of degrees more.
same issue, when i took my macbook apart to clean the dust. but taking it apart confuse the controller thinking that the macbook is in a dangerous state and wont allow the macbook performs well

Jessentis nah, Apple just follows thin-and-quiet approach, and will continue doing so. If only they made their laptops slightly thicker and used liquid cooling :/ That’s why Macs are only good for stuff like Netflix and low CPU load software.
Tergand Frostfire I meant put bad TIM on the chips that performs well enough for the first few months or however long but then dries up quickly and performs awfully making the average user without computer knowledge have to buy a new one or pay apple to replace it, etc
All OEMs use similar kind of TIM, not just apple. In fact, if you opened up a gaming laptop from MSI, HP, Asus, Acer ect. or a ultrabook from Dell, Asus, Lenovo, LG ect, you'd find the same type of cheap and quick drying TIM.

Video editing on Adobe with a MacBook Pro is leaving time on the table. Final Cut Pro will have significantly fast export times, although, I know it sucks getting used to a different workflow and all.
If you buy macbook you might as well use final cut pro wich would be much faster when redering your videos

I thought you got the macbook pro to edit in 4k with Final Cut Pro X while you're out covering trade shows.
TH-cam is probably causing high temps because the browser is using VP9, which OSX or the browser does not support via hardware decoding (even though Kaby Lake graphics do). Try watching on Safari. It will use the H264, but it should use the hardware decoder, leading to lower temps a very, very low CPU usage.
This is acutally using an older CPU then skylake LOL. Considering the Macbook Pro is from 2015

Did you test it plugged in? This can make a huge difference because the battery degrades and the computer downclocks the CPU when the laptop is not plugged in to make the battery last longer.

My 2015 MacBook 15” is burning amperage when not connected to charger at -3000mA to -3800mA. Do u know why. Mid 2015
YES! I recently bought the new MBP 15" and the CPU and GPU throttle so much! It's so annoying.
1. Offload the GPU to an eGPU.
2. Offload IO to a hub (ethernet, USB, TB, etc.).
3. Offload sound (bluetooth speaker or similar).
4. Put the MBP on a cooler. I made a custom copper heatsink that it rests on.
5. Make sure iCloud storage is not full or off (iCloud will spike the CPU when it is full periodically).
6. Use Firefox or Safari (Chrome will spike all cores).
After doing a thermal repaste, using a fan control app, undervolting by 150mv and using thermal pads to use the bottom of the chassis for cooling, mine runs around 50 degrees while on TH-cam streaming 4K content.
mean while in another universe, apple see your video and give you new macbook pro
Easy way to fix it: Stop giving Apple thousands of dollars for mediocre products.

I have the same MacBook Pro with the R9 M370X. The reason I bought it was for Final Cut Pro X and the much faster render times than Premier Pro on my desktop PC. I shoot and edit 4k all the time with no issues. If you want to run Premier Pro - don't use a Mac would be my advice. The MacBook Pro is optimized for FCPX.
I'm fairly sure it would down clock at 1080p because you may not be taking full advantage of the hardware level transcoding functions and therefore the rest of the cpu isn't at as high if a utilization. Therefore down clocking the cpu because doesn't think it's under the same load.
how about cleaning the fan? notice quite thick dust on the fan blade? try it

my mac just started going through these problems. i just shot a music video. Ive been trying to edit the 4k footage in premiere. Either during the edit or during the render. My computer automatically restarts. Ive never had this problem before. Every time i try again to edit. It does the same thing
Dmitri, did you take care of the mini dust bunnies? You could flush the heatsink with a can of compressed air or better, a fine toothed toothbrush. Dust+debris can impede heat transference across the heatsink due to insulation. On another note, you should've applied half the TIM you used since adding too much can and will add to the TIM acting as an insulative material rather than a transference media.
If you compare the Aero 15's cooling solution to that of the MBP, ther's no wonder that the Aero 15 rapes it. + if you check "iUnlocks" review after repasting the Aero 15, you'd cry.
Use an app like iStat Menus to force the fans to higher rpm. Apple loves to prefer throttling over cranking up the fans. I don’t know if that’s the reason it’s throttling at 85ºc but it’s worth playing around to find out.
Happens to me too, my friend has the base 15" and I have the one with AMD Radeon graphics. 2015 model, it's because of the GPU, at least in my case. My fans start to blast on basic games and a lot of tabs while my friends doesn't. No fan at aall
My MacBook Pro Retina goes 50-66c temperature when I watch TH-cam video or 1444p video. Is that normal? Idle temperatures is 30-45c.

Did you use some canned air to blow the dust out of the fan assemblies? The thin heat exchanger fins really like to collect dust which will block airflow.
Why don't you use final cut pro for editing on the macbook?

What I think is that computers in general have a procedure to lower performance if they can. 1080p videos are less heavy as 4k videos, so they drop performance. That also has to do with lifetime. I also notice performance on my windows platform while transferring files, the usb can handle 100mb/s but its on a few kb/s because the files are just a few kb. It's something weird, I agree that with you, but this may be an logical explanation.
Can we? Why should we? Get a Windows laptop for double the performance in the same price range with no throttling problems - the solution to all Mac related problems. Easy.
People who buy Ultrabooks (that is what a MacBook is) want a small, lightweight device that lasts the whole day. IF you want to compare a MacBook to a Windows Machine, compare it to a Dell XPS or Microsoft Surface Book 2 (which are all roughly the same in price if equally specced)... and yes, they, too, suffer from overheating/throttling problems because that is pretty normal for Ultrabooks.

Balderdash. Asus, Acer, Razer and HP all have premium built ultrabooks that are just as performant (if not more) than any Macbook and cost much less. Owning a Macbook in the last 2-3 years has become as ridiculous as the people who insist on buying them for no logical or measurable reason.
Are your fans actually ramping up to max speed? Try using Macs Fan Control so you can control the speed of both fans and maybe that will help a bit too

Premier on Macs suck. Try using FXP. It blows it away especially in exports.
