Variant Magic Item - Staff of the Monty Python! 😄
With a command word, this staff will transform into a dead parrot, a shrubbery or a rectangular canister containing a gelatinous, brownish-pink substance.
By expending one charge, the wielder can utter the word “Ni!” and those within a 15’ cone in front of the wielder suffer 1d8+1 sonic damage with no save.
By expending two charges, the wielder can make creatures in a 20’ by 20’ by 20’ cube confused (per the confusion spell) unless a successful saving throw is made.
By expending three charges, the wielder causes a 15’ cone of bile and digestive juices to erupt from his/her/its mouth, doing 3d8+3 damage unless a successful save is made.
By breaking the staff over his/her/its knee (or similar appendage), the wielder calls down a •retributive stomp•. A gigantic 30’ x 10’ bare foot falls from the heavens, squashing anyone and anything beneath it flat unless a successful DC 15+the wielder’s spell proficiency vs. Dexterity is rolled.
Side effects of owning this item include a propensity for silly walks, muttering non sequiters in a high-pitched and strangely-accented voice and bouts of cowardice.

Four shalt thou not expend, neither expend thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then break thy Staff of the Monty Python upon thy knee and lobbest thou shards towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

For the druid, one could reskin Scale Mail armor as Crocodile Scale Armor, so that they could get that 14+ 2dex worth of AC. I mean, there's always stuffed crocodiles and other such creatures in a wizard's workshop - whose to say that a druid, who wanted some extra protection, wouldn't borrow the scales of a crocodile? Besides, giant crocodiles have an ac of 14, so it could work.

I personally like Staff of Healing over Necklace of Prayer beads for a few (minor) reasons.
You're not guaranteed all spells in Necklace of Prayer Beads (depends on the rolls). Also, 1d4 + 2 could mean only 3 beads. And what if you got Branding Smite, and 2x Cure Wounds/Lesser Restoration as your 3 beads as an example. Now compare that with Staff of Healing, also Rare and Attuned with guaranteed 10 charges, you could cast Cure Wounds lvl 2 or Lesser Restoration 5x per day vs the beads 2x and one Branding Smite which I personally would never use. Yes you can use the beads as a bonus action, but spell rules still apply, so you can only cast a cantrip or make a melee attack for your Action anyways. In the other case, most Clerics have Spiritual Weapon up so if using an Action to use your Staff of Healing you still have a bonus action for your Spiritual Weapon attack so not a big difference typically. Just not a fan of the rolling magic items cause bad rolls could make it really underpowered (vice versa good roll could be great). Just my thoughts.

As for the Rod of Absorption, RAW Counterspell targets the creature, not the spell. This has been confirmed by Jeremy Crawford. So you should be able to absorb a Counterspell that's targeting you if:
    - you haven't used your reaction yet during the round _(and)_
    - the spell you're trying to cast doesn't require a somatic/material component _(or)_
    - your other hand is free to perform the somatic/material component of the spell you're casting (even if it has both S,M components because they can be done by the same hand per the PHB).

Funny enough, I have a druid, circle of the stars, who has max wisdom and the sentenal shield, and the feat observant. His passive perception is I believe 28 and the reason toe why it's funny, is simply due to the fact I wasted a better feat option or stat increase just to increase his passive perception since he needs that amazing perception to look at the stars all night

never seen a debate over Counterspell while casting another spell it only has somatic but I have seen people say that using a magic item has to be an action but I have also seen JC mention that it would be pointless for it to take an action to interact with a magic object if it is a scroll of counterspell. he implied that if a magic item used a spell it used the economy of the spell plus the Rod specifies reaction. it would kinda defeat the purpose of the item if you have to hold your action to wait for the unwanted spell to target you.

When You use reaction to absorb counterspell, You are not casting spell, so i dont see how You should finish casting. Maybe id let players save their spellslot

We homebrewed that my Celestial Warlock could attune to the Staff of Healing since she was the party's healer, we just changed it so that it was a 'gift' from her patron... whom just so happens to be her mother.

Love these ideas thanks guys! I second the reflavoring existing items, especially to make a PC feel special. Pearl of power and staff of healing I've seen reflavored unique to a deity so inky a cleric or paladin of them can use it and the pedal of power also reflavored as an undying flower for a druid. Love putting unique descriptions to existing items tk make them feel unique and fresh!

it kinda sounds like there are no specific items for clerics or druids. just some stuff that can kinda work, but would also be useful for anyone. seems odd kinda.

    • @redhairdavid
      @redhairdavid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@johncox7169 but, unless im mistaken, those arent really cleric specific. like, couldn't a paladin have any of that and use it just fine. they dont really enhance the cleric specifically, they just do stuff when activated, by anyone that can activate them.

Regarding Counterspelling when casting another spell, it has been confirmed in official errata that it is intended to be a possibility. Detailed here media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/SA-Compendium.pdf under "Can you cast a reaction spell on your turn?" They explicitly say this: "You sure can! Here’s a common way for it to happen: Cornelius the wizard is casting fireball on his turn, and his foe casts counterspell on him. Cornelius also has counterspell prepared, so he uses his reaction to cast it and break his foe’s counterspell before it can stop fireball"
