The suposed German field fortification is not mentioned in the sources and their were a fair number of survivors who made it to a Roman fort and later to safety over the rhine, as well as others made prisoner and later ransomed. It was also not a tactic seen used by the tribesmen anywhere else in this period. More recent digs suggest it was actually a roman fortification. Possiblly the last roughly built overnight march camp of Varus mentioned in the longest source.

I'd imagine there would be a great many roman artifacts to be found within the area of the bog itself, although probably buried too deep to show up on metal detectors.
