i've always appreciated the "try, fail, succeed" model of old school seth's bike hacks. so much MTB content then was just people flexing and looking awesome, and seth was just a normal guy.
but i talk to so many normal mountain bikers that think they're not legit because they just ride around in the woods trying not to die. they're so relieved to hear they're not alone. we're here for the adventure, the fun, the fresh air and trees. not the collar bone separations.

I didn’t have any serious injuries until I hit my 50’s. That makes 30 years of mtb before I finally had an injury where I needed help from others. It really hit me that I had to change the way I ride. The biggest challenge is that it’s not a skill thing, it’s a mentality thing. It kind of saddened me for a while, but I finally came to appreciate that there’s more to mtb than the adrenaline rush that I had unconsciously associated with my mtb life. Good luck Seth, I hope you find a place in mtb that doesn’t involve you getting injured.

It is funny... my wilderness first aid instructor in British Columbia said the activity he'd never do was mountain biking. He rescued too many people with horrific injuries who'd thrown themselves off jumps, or failed to recognize a hazard.
My co-worker in Southern California is a mountain biker. He doesn't go out road riding (I do - and commute) because of safety. In my case, the hazard is the car traffic (they hate me, I hate them, I wish them all dead engines).

I dislocated my shoulder on Berm Peak in Slaughter Pen today. Today, the day you dropped this video. - Moral of the story, I learned something and I also thought what I was doing was “predictable” and I didn’t need to care so much. Always care.

Wisdom is learning from the mistake of others so I am thankful you are passing this wisdom on your crashed too.

Seth, I’ve been riding 30+ years, I’m older than you, have a family and a business. I came to the realization years ago that getting hurt is selfish. Glad to see you came to the same realization. Ride hard, ride safe. 👊🏼

Ugh I crashed this morning and I'm watching this with ice strapped to my body. As a mental health counselor a few concepts come to mind with your dilemma. The planning fallacy, optimism bias and the illusion of control. A lot of us struggle to make safe and realistic decisions, especially those of us with ADHD. A topic for a future video!?

@@prophetzarquonsome people think they’re uncomfortable and hot as well as constricting peripheral vision but there’s plenty nowadays that are so light and breathable that I honestly am surprised full-face isn’t more common even if you don’t ride downhill.

"Getting hurt is selfish" is a very apt reminder, and it's a lesson i think few of us really think about enough, if at all. I always used to be a very cautious skater, not one to 'send it' at all. still am, really. it was only in my 20s, i was riding my bike more and i kinda stopped caring about getting hurt, (is my bike ok?) but after a particularly nasty scrape, i was reminded, "it's not just you anymore" - and that was just my partner, no kids! Nonetheless a powerful and important reminder for me - glad you're figuring it out too.

Nice job Seth. I’m 45 now and have to make conscious decisions not to hit certain jumps or bomb long sets of concrete stairs on my cyclocross bike, or etc. It’s better to ride regularly and safely than to go big and get laid up. Your setting a good example for a lot of us who are still 5 at heart : )

Made it 13 years of trail riding, occasionally dabbling in some downhill bike parks and this year was the first time I hurt myself. Separated shoulder and broken collarbone.
I 100% agree it is the the things that you relax on that get you hurt and it's exactly how I did myself in. Glad to see we're both learning from our mistakes when family/kids are involved too.
    Cheers to a good 2025!

hey Seth, great video. I'm a tick over 50 and cannot afford to get injured like I did in my 20s and 30s, I also do high risk activities as my job. Some things worth looking in to that might help you clock the risks in real time are 'dynamic risk assessment' and as dumb as this sounds maybe doing mini risk assessments for your video concepts - like taking 5min to step through a process to ID and mitigate risk as part of your prep might help you avoid disasters in those predictable situations. Keep doing what you do, this is by far the best bike channel on the website.

I completely respect this and completely understand it and you have a responsibility to yourself and your family… With that said I would really like to see that hawk video so I don’t get injured because I also have the bug… But significantly less skill. You getting hurt helps us not get hurt…like me trying to teach my S/O there is a method to falling. (Ya know, catching oneself with your hands Vs. tuck and roll). I’ve been inspired to eat better, exercise, more, make smarter purchases, and also find skinny lines and drops… Even on my electric scooter. ( = me getting hurt)
Just something to keep in mind.
Irrelevant, but I just drove from Key West to CT and it was hard not to stop in NC.

Hi, I would like to tell you that there are more creators for many different videos, you are one that people watch because they want to learn something, not because of any fails or things like that. You impart knowledge, and in a great way. And even if my English is not that good enough for me to write to you here, I can understand what you are explaining. I started jumping BMX in the early seventies. Raced MX and street bikes during the eighties. Raced MTB XC through the nineties. Got into Freeride and Downhill in the late nineties and continued this actively through 2021 with lots of crashes/hospital stays. Two years ago I even purchased an old Gary Fisher mtb at a pawn shop in North Carolina, bought some cheap tools at Wallyworld, took it to a xar wash and got it running just goid enough to get some laps at Berm Park.
At 63 I tried once again to DH and now it scared me to death. So, now you see me at the golf course. Enjoy your vids, Seth😀

Wise words! Learned this rather young which is why my MTB progression started off slow. Safe to say I am very confident and know my limits. Have only crashed a few times and nothing major. I still get out and enjoy it as much as I want to so I do not have fomo.
