Purgatory in religion is usually a place between heaven and hell. Like a holding place. For catholics is also a place that you can be suffer some for not beeing good in life, but if you were not evil enough for hell, you can still get to heaven after doing your tine in purgatory. To me the fact you have different people from different backgrounds socializing and getting along, like the nazi and the black guy, is to show how pointless it is to make enemies in this life and when we put all that baggage asside we can come together as humans.
