- Is it Bach or is it AI? In this challenge, I try and figure out if I'm listening to the real JS Bach, or an AI imitation. Spoiler alert: it's difficult.
Try the BachBot challenge for yourself!

You always come up with the quirkiest things to post.
Happy to be a member of your community!!!
Thank you so much!!! I appreciate your support
This was a fun one!
My choices: 21122. Everything except 3rd and 5th examples was obvious: you just don't hear a distinct "musical idea" in AI's writing, there's no "real" melody, no "proper" voiceleading.
#5 had the same melody in both options....but there were subtle differences in the middle voices. I chose #2, because there were a couple of spots where the dissonance sounded a tad too jarring to me.
I agreed with your 5 choices, so we both got 60%! Interesting quiz....
Bach botBot, bach, bot, bot,bot
But you've got a much better appreciation of the music than I do.
That was fun-- thanks for sharing-- very entertaining and especially loved your vocals. Agree that the stupidly fast tempi and no fermata holds make this challenge a bit unrealistic. For question #1, the "more correct" answer was the other option (Ich steh' an deiner Krippen hier)-- but it was transposed to such a ridiculously high key, Bach himself may not have been 100% convinced. For question #5, in my opinion, the AI "cheated"-- both chorale tunes were "Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt"-- and the audio clips sounded the same because they were almost identical (you can read along in Riemenschneider #157). Perhaps the programmers did this on purpose to see how picky your ears are in listening for unresolved dissonances and incorrect doublings in inner voices. Or, maybe the programmers trained the RNN using this chorale, so the AI produced a near identical copy. So Bach himself may have even given you a well deserved 5 of 5. :-)
Don't be sad about being promoted to a higher age group. With age, comes wisdom ...hopefully! My nephews used to demand that I watch Spongebob Squarepants with them. I remember the episode with Plankton singing and kind of wishing that I could sing like him. Then, I realized that if I made any attempt to sing at the bottom of the ocean, I would either drown or be crushed by the intense water pressure.
Nice exercise! When AI can replicate the likes of Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff, then I’ll be impressed!
It’s coming soon, I’m sure!!
“From JS and ME” 😢
(grammar )
yes, there was on obviously Bach thing….#1 as having taken a chorale from weihnachtsoratorium, which is an absolute must sing in protestant christmas services… 😂 … Ich steh an Deiner Krippen hier.
Nick, you gotta sing more oratories… 😅😊
#5 reminds me of A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
This was a fun challenge. I played the game before watching the video to play along and got an 80%!
Nicely done!
Do you have an idea to produce an acapella album?
That would be fun!
I could never make the BachBot play on either of the 2 platforms I tried. Do they always come up in the same order? Does anybody know?
60% in a sample of just five coin throws would be perfectly within a random result, i.e., 50% ± 20%. This test was hard because all samples were of a choral type. There was not much counterpoint here, which you could recognize if you played or listened to DWC, inventions, sinfonias, suites, etc.
Did you get 100%?
@@nickhiggsthesinger I didn't attempt. They should have provided you with correct answers, so you could figure out where and why you erred. On such a small sample you would have to get over 70% right to do better than a coin throw. How is that Rameau's second trio of the Parkas going? There are some interesting harmonies and counterpoint in it that are normally drowned by the glissandos of the violins, and the singers trying to out-shout each other and the orchestra.
(Thinks) What have we done to deserve the Mass in B Minor?
I looooove the B minor mass!
just got 100%... where can i buy your JS B statue ? So many things to tell him 😉
ugh, MIDI
ABBBA was my answer
1,1,2,2,2
Too much dissonance in #4A
3/1 sounds like Bach, but is perhaps too basic. I’ll see.
Your figure is not very similar to Bach.
pardon?
