I've seen this happen while working in cenotes. It was the scariest thing I've ever watched with two divers doing this at 80' after one ran out of air. They also just continued to dive for another 10/15 minutes as if nothing happened and would not listen to my attempts to get shallower and surface... Truly crazy

Have you not seen the actual child leashes before? 🤣 I would run into it every once in awhile , and it was always some spoiled out of control kid with a mother who didn't know that discipline and respect are a must for parents. They may have taken them off the market for safety and abuse issues as I haven't seen one in many years.

@@skullingtonfx4441 Out of curiosity what sort of setting do you see them being used in? Like I could see using one on a small kid if the parent has their arms full in a big city where there is lots of traffic, people and potential predators.
Personally though I think that being a good parent includes teaching kids not to run off, eventually the leash will have to go and that kid will have some bad habits relying on someone else to stop them from thoughtlessly running into bad situations. My dogs don't even need a leash, and I can let them out into the yard on their own and they stay in my yard unsupervised. Training is very important for dogs and kids...lol

Just got my advanced open water PADI certification and I'm hoping to pursue diving further, most likely the rescue diver cert. next. I've been trying to encourage more of my friends to dive with me, and I think the rescue certification course will help inspire confidence in both myself (to have confidence in my own skills if something goes wrong) and others (I'd imagine new divers are comforted knowing their dive buddy knows what to do in crisis moments). His divemaster had him on a leach dangling some 2-3m (6-7feet?) below and the kid was being pulled up and down to avoid stepping on corals. We saw his dad the first day and never again, all other days his DM picked him up after breakfast and delivered him to the hotelroom in the evening. Poor boy, he had some really lazy parents!

We were taught, that if a reg starts free flowing, chances are, it's just an ice crystal that has formed somewhere along the way and is blocking the membrane from closing. First aid for that wasn't thumbing the dive, but rather sharing air with your buddy for a bit and closing your tank to give the crystal chance to melt.

Tbh, in defence of the newbie diver with the free-flowing , when my regulator started drawing in water at 25m depth (it was my 16th dive or so and the mouth piece had a tear and was letting water in when I moved my head) I also just reached for my buddy's octo. Didn't even think about my own octo. At that point I was just happy that I could stay calm enough not to bolt for the surface (which I have done in the very first pool session🤦‍♀️). Sometimes you're stressed, you're scared, you realise you're in water, could drown, and all you want is a safe source of air and a controlled end to the dive.
After that my instructor took me to the side and we walked through everything I did right and didn't do right in that situation. Which was very helpful.

As always, I loved your video! The incident analysis approach (or sometimes "pre-incident"... or "pro-incident" as in this case) is VERY helpful and educational . That being said... I'm kinda missing an "everything went well" / "they did everything right in an awesome place" video... WITH the educational approach... I mean there are several channels with footage of the places I´d love to go some day (I do have my diving bucket list... some are way too deep, way too cold -I remember a couple of years ago in the middle of Patagonia shoving for hours but couldn't get under the %"·$%"·$%" ice...-, but mostly waaaaayyyyy to expensive just to get there)... Anyway... as I was saying... your reaction to good practices, things carried out as should be done, etc... BTW, it´s super cool how also non divers enjoy your videos! kudos!!!!

You guys are awesome 👌. So what happends when you breathe in water underwater and start choking? That has to cause a lot of panic to a new diver huh? Or anyone really. I'm sure you train for this.

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@joey jeffery Yes, even during your Open Water Class you learn about how to deal with out of air situations, but it can definitely lead to panic if you are not experienced.
Last week during a dive that was part of a class I was taking, I performed a bail-out exercise from 200 ft/60 m and as I started ascending my regulator malfunctioned completely and I had no more air...at 180 feet with more than 30 minutes of Decompression to complete before I can go to the surface I didn't really have the option to just panic and bilt to the surface...it is funny how people react to emergencies and how your brain really can be trained on how to react by extensive training and practice.
Over the last two dive trips I've found myself in real emergency situations, one 1,400 feet inside a cave when my rebreather got busted against the cave ceiling and bubbles start pouring out of it, the last one at 180 feet underwater after a really deep dive...both times I was able to stop for a second, analyze my options and make the best call which allowed me to safely end the dive and learn an important lesson.
Maybe I need to share that story here on the channel some day, this year I've had several real emergencies like that but I try not to share them in here because I definitely don't want to make this channel all about me and my experiences. I rather focus on those divers who deserve all the recognition and praise instead, but maybe some day we get to share these stories if people here are interested.
      Gus

You made the comment about overreacting but honestly anyone that gives you shit for that don't think to much about it (as im sure you don't) I know that stuff can go wrong and FAST when diving and it is very important to know and practice the skills to maintain a safe diving career. And not only know the skills to get certified but to practice them and improve upon them each time you dive. My Dive Dad (shop owner) says something along the lines of "The day you learn nothing when you dive, is the day you aren't an efficient diver." and that's very true. Y'all do a great job on your videos. I would love to dive with y'all some time or if y'all are ever in SC diving I would be thrilled. (Only Advanced Certified though) lol

1:47 While in warm (such as in the video) the steps you describe for correcting a freeflow are good, in cold water the reg can freeze.
In a cold water situation you need to turn the pillar valve off. I've seen freeflows (in a training lake in winter) where there was about 0.5m bulge on the surface due to all the bubbles from the free flow, and the pillar valve and first stage had a coating of ice.

Both of you guys are amazing! But there is something about Woody that I absolutely adore! He just seems so sweet and wise and calm and professional, all at the same time! He is the type of guy that I will dive with at any depth, because he seems so put together and trustworthy. Like it’s just a part of his personality. And the way he talks and explain stuff, is just so amazing because he can make it sound so interesting, and simple to understand!
Honestly, both of you guys are great commentators!
I’ve never tried scuba diving, but after finding your channel, I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m a 25 y/o girl who’ve always been afraid of the ocean but now it just seems so full of adventures! Thanks to you guys!

🤣 you guys just made my day with that one. I have dove that place multiple times is i a beautiful drift dive, and you always see those guys, it's sad and funny. One time the DM was so used to see people with horrible air consumption that when I ended my dive he grabbed my SPG to check with how much air I have ended the dive lol I ended the dive with 1500psi the DM was over weighted he ended with 200psi and everyone else was out of air... then he checked my weights I had 8Lb with full gear everyone else was diving with 24Lb plus he started laughing he couldn't believe it... it was so funny I guess they aren't used to have somewhat good divers. 🤣🤣🤣

I've been handheld an entire dive before though. Booked a dive day trip through the resort we were staying at, found out - on the dive boat - that it was at 24m, i only have padi basic which is 15m. The divemaster was really annoyed that the resort hadn't told us, however he agreed after asking my aunt and uncle who also were diving hpw I was in the water.
His cobdition was that i held his hand almost the entire dive, incase something happened :)

Woody at about 3:30 : maybe we should've called this Cave Divers (Over)React 😆. I'm bingeing Dive Talk videos and I often find myself surprised when Gus & Woody describe the more negative comments on their criticism of the videos that they're reacting to, as well as stop/start pace. I have to wonder if some viewers were just not as familiar with the concept of reaction videos two or three years ago.For viewers are familiar with beauty TH-cam or Art TH-cam (& other spaces that tend to be a bit more reactive), the set-up here is par-for-the-reaction-course. Regardless, I appreciate how Woody & Gus respectfully explain why the show runs the way it does, always highlighting education & safety.

Pretty standard stuff in Cozumel. Some of the guides run a 7' hose so they can extend the bottom time of the diver with the worst air usage. Since they do drift dives they bring everyone up at the same time and they try to make the dive a little longer for the more experienced divers. Not saying it's right, just that they do it all the time.
