    I recently broke my folding saw , a cheap hardware store one that gave me three years of very good use in ... let's say less than ideal condition (a lot of cutting on very old wood submerged in swamp waters ... it's surprisingly tough to cut !), I'm definitely going to check out those samurai saws ! Can't be bothered with a silky, they might be amazing, but most of the people who own them broke the tip... I realize it's due to an user mistake, but I'm not smarter than my friends, I'll end up breaking it too :p.
    The robust is ... well it's just an anomaly of a knife. A lot of people praise the Garberg and the Puuko from varusteleka as "the knifes that everyone should own". I do believe they are wonderful knifes indeed, but with the Robust being the price it is ... I just can't justify putting 90 euros into a "deluxe" robust (unless you really want one, which is more than fair). Yes the blade is longer, but nothing a bit of creativity can't make up for, and with experience, I found that I was more often wishing my 13 cm bladed knifes were a bit nimbler than I did for the robust to be a few centimeters longer.
    Great video as always, Thank you for your work.

    Actually, been out to the woods several times now this year when the temperature is undr 32c , been sticking to my easy old knock around gear in a kit tossed on the back of the truck. Bringing along dry wood too , the humidity along with the rain 🌧has left everything damp wet and molding. Lighting a fire in 97°F at 70%humidity is more punishment than fun . Been using a single burner camp stove easy peasy for coffee or tea .
    Today was 88°F then the rain came dropped to 76 in about 15 min. Had to evacuate to my truck because of 50 to 60 mph winds along with heavy lightning 🌩 only lasted 45 min but it was a doozy ! After it passed ,made a cup o coffee ☕and packed up and came home. Going to take a quick bath warm up some spicey spaghetti and meat sauce leftover, make a garlic bread and have a ice cold adult beverage. 😋. Then to bed 🛌😴early. Tomorrow i work .
    I do appreciate your views and the time you put into your presentations.
    Very entertaining and interesting, we don't always agree but the majority of your ideas and thoughts are in line with my musings and my ruminations.

    In America, you have to look for matches now days. The ones you have are not too easy to find. When I was a young they called strike anywhere matches Barn Burners. The ones I have will light on any rough-dry surface.
    The Estwing Hatchet you Dad bought is one of my favorites. I used Estwing hammers; carpenter hatchets and camp axes for years and have never need to get another. You might pay more for some name brands but you do not always get more. I think your Dad was smart man.

    Heck ya some match love! Not enough love for the matches these days lol. I think people think they suck, when it’s really them who suck lol 😂. I mean there is definitely quality of the matches to be spoken for, but it can take some skill to use them reasonably as simple as it sounds.

    • @RobEvansWoodsman
      @RobEvansWoodsman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I started woods camping ferrorods were rubbish and could only light cotton wool so matches or lighters were the only real option for firelighting, Zippo lighters would need constant refilling due to evaporation and I never found the BIC style lighter any good in wind or awkward spaces (lighting and teepee fire etc) so I learnt towards using matches, l always tried to stick to one match one fire, skill for picking the right fine kindling was definitely gained by sticking to this method, today's large kitchen matches are so much better than the old style small smokers match, I just wish they were strike anywhere.

    Great review Rob! I feel the same way about the Robust Pro. I did invest in a kydex sheath for them because I like the knife so much. And I 90’d the spine as well. Great knife! Probably the best knife under $20 you can get including the Companion, IMO.
    What do you think about the Hultafors OK4? It seems very similar to the Robust Pro and from what I understand they are very inexpensive in Europe. I have seen them on Amazon for around $25 and am tempted to get one just to see how it compares to my Moras.

    When you mentioned strike anywhere matches it made me think of some Swan Vestas I bought for emergencies years ago. One pack I still have, the other I dipped the heads in melted wax to waterproof them which was something I'd read about when I was young. It seemed to work really well, I submerged them in water and they lit every time. I found them a year or two ago and they still lit after 15 years or so in a draw.
    I've never heard any of the YT bushcrafters mentioning dipping match heads in wax to waterproof them. So I have a question if that's OK, Is it a valid technique for waterproofing matches for a survival kit?

      We used to do that back in scouting around 1963. Used to buy red tip blue diamond strike anywhere matches in the large kitchen box and melt canning Gulf wax over a Colman stove and dip the tips in and place them on wax paper to cool . Would carry a match safe from the Marbles knife company that when you open it there was a little pin holding on to a plate in the bottom so when you un screwed it and pulled the top off it would rais all the matches up for ease of use. Dandy little bit of kit. Wish i still had one.
      The matches never failed me or my father. Made hundreds of fires scouting. Those old fashioned matches were the kind that you could light with a thumb nail. Wish they still made them like that. There is a company in kiddron Ohio , I think call Lehman's hardware store . www.lehmans.com
      . You might like to check out. They make Amish tools and equipment like kerosene lamps non powerd tools and equipment that are great for camping.
