Joseph Bauer agreed! This album as all platinum (in my opinion), but people become antsy and don't take the time to sit down and dissect the lyrics to understand how beautiful they really are. It's like a priceless work of art (hear me out), each word is such a 'broad' brushstroke, with a defining purpose. The synonyms he uses to describe a scene really capture the experience.
I walked down to the aisle to this song. It's very special to me. "Standing on the landing with war You shouldered all the night before" has literal meaning to me. Colin's voice here is immaculate ❤
Was just sitting here strumming that song and decided to listen to the original once more... never fails to make me happy!! Even in these trying times. Just a thing of great beauty right there!! Thank you Mr Meloy.
Pure poetry. Decemberists songs always have such pretty and picturesque lyrics. Their discography is one of the most consistent and creative out there and I worry I may never find another like them again.
I tear up a bit every time I hear this. Love it so much. While lacking the harmonies of the studio recording, this solo performance still blows me away. Such a beautiful song!
I love this song after all these years- something about it just feels so RIGHT and perfect. Same with the January song- probably my most favorite band ever. Grateful for the writing of Colin and the music of The Decemberists
@@badbadkingjohn Hope you are well my friend. I was just enjoying this song again and scrolled down to realise I'd already commented on it! Ah well, it still makes me happy 4 years down the track!!
The portion from 3:05 to 3:30 gives me chills every time I listen to this. It sounds pure beyond anything I've heard before in a live performance. Grand.
Listening to my son playing the guitar along with Colin as the song plays.... doesn't get much better unless Colin were actually here and they could play more songs together!
Love this song and his voice and his presentation of it...and he reminds me so of the late Phil Ochs, his clarity, his voice quality, his message...the whole vibe...
I love this. this performance and song has a '71 era Neil Young vibe to it. Even has the fiddling with the harp trap down like neil used to back in the day.
maybe I'm ignorant but I genuinely do not understand how someone could dislike this. everyone is definitely entitled to their own opinion for sure but I'm completely discombobulated.
Here's a hymn to welcome in the day Heralding a summer's early sway And all the bulbs all coming in, To begin The thrushes bleating battle with the wrens Disrupts my reverie again Pegging clothing on the line Training jasmine how to vine Up the arbor to your door, And more You're standing on the landing with the war You shouldered all the night before [Chorus:] And once upon it The yellow bonnets Garland all the line And you were waking And day was breaking A panoply of song And summer comes to Springville Hill A barony of ivy in the trees Expanding out it's empire by degrees And all the branches burst a' bloom Into bloom Heaven sent this cardinal, maroon To decorate our living room [Chorus:] And once upon it The yellow bonnets Garland all the line And you were waking And day was breaking A panoply of song And summer comes to Springville Hill And years from now When this old light isn't ambling anymore Will I bring myself to write "I give my best to Springville Hill" [Chorus:] And once upon it The yellow bonnets Garland all the line And you were waking And day was breaking A panoply of song And summer comes to Springville Hill
My son's first concert was the Decemberists last year. We were so lucky to get to see you at McMenamins! While my son loved the flying blimps (and he can sing the entire Mariner's Revenge @ 7 years old), June Hymn will forever be my personal favorite.
Well... everyone does something wrong. But I agree. Looking forward to what's new. He's made leaps as a songwriter/musician, and he's just getting into his prime.
@riseuplikeangels yeah, I totally know where you re coming from. 'in the beginning God made Colin meloy. And it was good, very good' as we can all see.
I could be reading too much into this comment, but I feel like that's not a good reason to listen to something. Keep in mind, this is a lighthearted comment.
It's a shame that many men view musical talent as something "sissy" or "un-manly". :/ Nothing is more attractive than talent like this. *le sigh* Why are the attractive ones always taken? Lol.
One of the greatest songs ever written, in my opinion.
Joseph Bauer it’s currently my favorite. I absolute love Colin’s lyricism

I concur.
Absolute poetry.
Louis Hobbs I strenuously concur

Best musician and lyricists of our generation
Jesus that's an inviting vocal melody if I've ever heard one
this whole damn album rocks my world. but this song and January Hymn are my immediate favourites!
Would struggle to find many tracks as beautiful, as emotional as this.

A panoply of song. This is Colin Meloy.
This songs needs a million views...
This is the perfect summer song...play it every year in June in NY.
One of my all-time favourites. Just beautiful, stick it on repeat and let it play over and over.
his first encore # at Troutdale this year; my third concert of his, I have been praying for it; 20 feet away

Absolutely beautiful tune and awesome song writer 😊❤️🎶😊❤️🎶
I turn this on all the time to use as background noise when I do homework. I can't, I hear it and I have to watch him perform. Dammit, Colin. . .
This generation's Paul Simon, and it's not close
Both of my kids were born in June, so this song became even more beloved to me
and i can't listen now to Rise to Me without getting very emotional...this guy is a genius
He's very good

So glad I stumbled upon this band , or should I say the band found me? Can't wait to hear more of them! This guy is so gifted....Purest, clearity
This was my life when my kids were little.
I Love YOUr Song and how YOU passionately sing IT out to US clearly and loudly 💗
Such a amazing song! Great performance. Can't get enough of The Decemberists.
First song I listened to our wedding day. Summer solstice.
what a beautiful song, not much else one can s.
I am too excited for the new album. Colin Meloy, I love you, you do no wrong.
Love this group
I had a heart attack in 2012 and The King is Dead was the soundtrack to my recovery during cardiac rehab. This song in particular.
Incredible performance
They are rather good, aren't they..... love them
Oh, Colin Meloy. You're the best person ever.
Simply beautiful...

Here's a hymn to welcome in the day
Heralding a summer's early sway
And all the bulbs all coming in,
To begin
The thrushes bleating battle with the wrens
Disrupts my reverie again
Pegging clothing on the line
Training jasmine how to vine
Up the arbor to your door,
And more
You're standing on the landing with the war
You shouldered all the night before
[Chorus:]
And once upon it
The yellow bonnets
Garland all the line
And you were waking
And day was breaking
A panoply of song
And summer comes to Springville Hill
A barony of ivy in the trees
Expanding out it's empire by degrees
And all the branches burst a' bloom
Into bloom
Heaven sent this cardinal, maroon
To decorate our living room
[Chorus:]
And once upon it
The yellow bonnets
Garland all the line
And you were waking
And day was breaking
A panoply of song
And summer comes to Springville Hill
And years from now
When this old light isn't ambling anymore
Will I bring myself to write
"I give my best to Springville Hill"
[Chorus:]
And once upon it
The yellow bonnets
Garland all the line
And you were waking
And day was breaking
A panoply of song
And summer comes to Springville Hill
You might consider the possibility that he's saying, "Garland all the lawn."
@@custerranch I purposely watched him sing it, to see if that was what I heard. It is.
@@custerranch I was agreeing with "lawn".

3:18 - Chills everywhere every time.
Happy Solstice 2024, a panoply of song.
Awesome
Amazing song.
Thanks Colin
Colin Meloy and Ben Gibbard- what can't you create?
Magic.
The best!!
I saw echo echo last week it was amazing
marvellous!
I've watched two videos where he didn't put the harmonica in right and then takes it out and its kind of cute hahah.
I really miss Portland, sometimes. I don't miss the prices or homelessness, or drug use, but the music is just not the same in Kentucky.
Summer comes to springfield
Dear Colin:
When can we hang out and play guitar? Bring Gillian...
Well... everyone does something wrong.
But I agree. Looking forward to what's new. He's made leaps as a songwriter/musician, and he's just getting into his prime.
what key is the harmonica he's playing?
@TralfamadorianShoes Oh goodness, yes. Best comment ever.
A, if you still need it.
is that harmonica in E?
@riseuplikeangels yeah, I totally know where you re coming from. 'in the beginning God made Colin meloy. And it was good, very good' as we can all see.
who the hell "disliked" this?!
I like the guitar tone better on this one too than with his Gibby.
@pootubeP90x my thoughts exactly
@TheKiddem Keep Practicing! :D
@BlueGorillaGoes2Camp not to mention people mis-click. I do it all the time after iv'e had a bottle or two of vodka.
dudes, he's saying Colin could make dripping faucets sound good. Does he really have to spell it out? It's metaphorical. Get it?... derp
I could be reading too much into this comment, but I feel like that's not a good reason to listen to something. Keep in mind, this is a lighthearted comment.
He could produce an album made up of six hours of faucets dripping and I would still listen the fuck out of it because he's Colin Fucking Meloy.
It's a shame that many men view musical talent as something "sissy" or "un-manly". :/
Nothing is more attractive than talent like this.
*le sigh*
Why are the attractive ones always taken? Lol.
I love him too
Dude couldn’t write this if he weren’t taken, if he weren’t devoted, that’s essence of the song and the core of its beauty
I assume A, but I ain't no harmonicologist.
what the hell is an embling?
Brett M. Wilbur Ambling, not embling
The guitar sounds like it was recorded by a 4 Track
That seems like a silly sentiment. Don't you listen to him because of the music he creates?
This is the worst thing I have ever heard!!!! ........... Just kidding. It's pretty good.
